BIO: The following is quoted from the obituary of James KEELY, "The Rochester Sentinel, 1892" taken from "Newspaper Excerpts" p 31, Fulton Co. Public Library, Rochester, IN. "Wednesday, January 6, 1892 James KEELY was born in Butler County, O., Aug. 12, 1812. He moved to Shelby County, Indiana, in 1822 and located on Blue River where he continued to reside until 1844 when he moved to Indianapolis. He was married to Mary McKEE in 1835 and they are the parents of thirteen children, three of whom died in infancy, and one, Catherine COLLINS, (Bef 1892)after reaching the age of fifty years. Those now living are Samuel KEELY, aft 1892 Nancy McANALLY, Mary J. AULT, Sarah AULT, Phoebe GILCHRIST, attatch-1846 Caroline STUBBS, Julia A. CARR, Francis BRUGH and Anthony KEELY. Mr. KEELY moved with his family to Fulton County in August, 1853 and located on a farm west of town. He was a brick mason by trade and in order that he might better follow his profession he came to Rochester in 18-9 (1869 or 89??) where he continued to reside until the angel of death called him to a higher life Wednesday evening Dec. 30, 1891. The aged wife who was his companion for more than a hf half century still survives. Father KEELY united with the Methodist church in 1832 and re- mained a consistent member until death. He was a loyal friend, an honest citizen, a genial companion and a devoted christian always active in the work of his Master, and he gladly heard the summons 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things,--will make the ruler over many things; enter thou into the joys of the Lord.' The remains were laid at rest in the Citizens cemetery at noon Sunday." From the "Rochester Sentinel" - Satuday, June 29, 1861: (page 259 of the collection of newspaper excerpts found at Fulton Co. Pub. Lib.; Rochester, IN) "ANNOUNCEMENTS: Editor of the "Sentinel": Announce the name of Jacob WHITTENBERGER of Henry Township, as the Union Candidate for County Clerk, and James KEELY, of Rochester Township, as the Union Candidate for County Commissioner... ...Jesse McKEE."
The data from Mr. and Mrs. CASTENS give "1816" as the year of birth for James KEELY. No source is cited.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Mary A. McKEE was the daughter of Anthony and Nancy (AGNEW) McKEE who were among the early settlers of Shelby Co., IN. Ref #3,(Peatie, 1896) also states that Mary's father was a soldier in the Western Dep't of the U.S. during the War of 1812. Mary and her husband James KEELY moved from Shelby Co., IN to Indianapolis (Marion) in about 1843. They then located in Fulton Co. about 1852. James preceded Mary in death by less than one year. Their oldest son, Samuel, was appointed administrator for the probating of their estate. Phoebe (KEELY) GILCHRIST was the fifth of the KEELY's 10 children. The daughter named " Emmaline Agnes" apparently died in infancy. She was 3 years old on the 1860 census but does not appear again. Probate records and Peaties "History" both list Nancy, widow of Thomas McANALLY, as one of the survivors of James and Mary (KEELY) McKEE. James KEELY's obituary states that this couple lost 3 children to death "in infancy." The other children, who are listed in the obituary, as well as in the county and family histories, appear in the records of this genealogy. Wednesday, December 28, 1892, the following obituary appeared in "The Rochester Sentinel": "Mother KEELEY, consort of James KEELEY, died Thusday morning after a protracted illness, aged about 75 years. Deceased was born in Ohio, came to Indiana in early life and married the late James KEELEY. Thirteen children were born to the union--nine of whom survive. She was a devout member of the Methodist church and widely known and beloved for her charity and motherly interest in the welfare of her large circle of acquaintances. The funeral service was conducted Saturday by Rev. BRIGGS and the remains were laid to rest in the same grave with those of her husband which were removed from the Citizens cemetery to the Odd Fellows."

General Notes for Child Mary J. Keely
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The article about her husband, taken from the Fulton County Atlas, gives Mary's date of birth and marriage date. It also mentions that Mary was the daughter of James and Mary KEELY, "old citizens" residing in the neighborhood of (Adam's) father. The AULT'S three children are named and vital dates are given; the article goes on to say they first lived two years on a farm; the next three in Plymouth, Marshall County, IN. Then they returned to Fulton County and farmed two more years. In March, 1871, they moved to Rochester, and Adam began his manufacture and sale of "Ault's Proprietary Medicines". As of 1883, they were still living there.
The obituary of Mary J. KEELY AULT, taken from old files of the "Rochester Sentinel", 1894, p. 121, reads as follows: Another death after years of patient suffering was that of Mrs. Adam Ault Friday morning. Her disease was heart failure and dropsy and her death had been expected for some time. Mrs. Ault was the daughter of the late James Keely and the mother of two children... Mrs. Nettie Johnson and Oliver Ault. She was a devoted christian, wife and mother and died at age fifty-one. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Rochester and it was conducted at Grace church, where deceased was a member, Sunday afternoon, Rev. R.D. Utter, a former pastor officiating.
(Compiler's note) The article on Adam Ault states that the Ault's had a third child who died in infancy. The burial place of Mary J. Keely Ault has not been confirmed; her husband is buried with their daughter Annetta and James Johnson at the IOOF Cemetery in Rochester, IN, but there is no mention of Mary J.'s grave in the "Fulton County Cemetery Inscriptions". General Notes for Child Phoebe Keely
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Phoebe is thought to be the fifth of ten children born to James and Mary (McKEE) KEELY. Both of her parents were children of early residents of Butler Co., OHIO. Her father was a brick mason and the son of Samuel KEELY, a pioneer settler in Shelby Co., IN. Phoebe's maternal grandfather, Anthony Wayne McKEE was born in Butler Co., OHIO, and is reported to have been a soldier in the "western department" of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. ("History of the U.S., Indiana and Fulton Co." Peattie, 1896, p 93) As of Jan. 1996, compiler has not been able to document this elsewhere. According to the "The Fulton County Atlas,1883", Phoebe was born in Indianapolis; however, typewritten information on the back of a copy of her death certificate says that she was born in "Miami Co.". (Compiler suspects the source may have misread the original death certificate) The 1860 census for Fulton County shows Phoebe to be 12 years old, but Thomas and Phoebe were married in June 0f 1862. In 1870, Phoebe was in the GILCHRIST home at age 24. Her tombstone gives vital dates as 1846-1895, yet her death certificate reads "Age of death, 50 years". At the time of Phoebe's death, she and Thomas were living on the land first owned by James and Mary GILCHRIST. Thomas sold this property to the NAFE family about a year later. The only photograph of Phoebe owned by this compiler was taken after her three children reached adulthood. In this family picture she appears to be nearly the same height as her husband (both are seated); of average weight with a somewhat long, narrow face and deep-set eyes. She appears to have been a very attractive woman. Most documents indicate that Phoebe had given birth to only three children, however, an article in the "Fulton County Cemetery Inscriptions" for the IOOF Cemetery at Leiters Ford indicates there is reason to believe the graves of three young children in the same area as the graves of Thomas and Phoebe are those of Phoebe's children. The graves of "Sideny M." (7 mos.), "Nellie I." (14 mos.), and "Edward L." (1 mo.) are located very close to Thomas' and Phoebe's grave. There is no surname on the stones, but no other adults are buried close enough to be associated as the parents of the three. After the listing of the three children's names, the cemetery inventory states, "(Note: This and the preceding two stones had no other identification on them. However, they are presumed to have been children of Thomas GILCHRIST who married 11 June 1862, Phoebe KEELY...Census records 1870 and 1880...indicate there were other children: James...,William...and Mary..." None of compiler's family was aware of the existence of the three young children buried near Thomas and Phoebe. ********************************************* Page 29, "Fulton County 1883 ATLAS" carries the following article: "Thomas GILCHRIST, farmer, P.O. Rochester, born in Jefferson County, Ind., in 1845, is the son of James and Mary ANDERSON GILCHRIST, who were natives of Scotland. The subject of our sketch became a resident of this county when six years old. He was educated in the district schools. The event of his marriage took place June 11, 1862, to Phoebe KEELY, who was born in Indianapolis, Ind., November 4, 1846. She is the daughter of James and Mary McKEE KEELY, who were natives of Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. GILCHRIST have had born to them three children- James, May 10, 1863; William, March 31, 1869; and Mary, September, 1875. Mr. GILCHRIST owns a fine farm of ninety acres in Section 29, on which he resides. He is an enterprising citizen and is highly respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances".
