General Notes for Child Cornelius Keith
The legend that Cornelius was of royal descent and the second legendthat he immigrated from Loch Lomond both originated in the1920sthrough the fanciful imaginations of descendants and the avariceof unscrupulous genealogists. Thus both of these claims were madeabout the second Cornelius in America--the existence of the originalCornelius was unknown to J. Montgomery Seaver who published THE KEITHGENEALOGY in Philadelphia in 1930.
While nothing definitive can be said about Cornelius because of anyrelationship to either of the clergymen James Keith, it is interestingthat these early settlers who came from the Keith clan territories ofNortheastern Scotland were neither Church of Scotland(Presbyterian)nor Roman Catholics like the majority of the populace,but were Church of England, (although one was a Puritan dissenter). Itis noteworthy that Cornelius also belonged to the Church of Englandand indeed served as a Lay Reader when he moved to Brunswick County.

In the name of God Amen. I Cornelius Keith ofPickensDistrict being sick in body but of sound mind and memory andknowingthat it is appointed unto man to die, do make and ordain thismy lastwill and testament--and first I recommend my soul unto thehands ofGod that gave it to me and body to be buried by my Executorsand asfor my worldly Estate that it hath pleased God to give me. Idisposeof as follows to wit.
Item--I lend unto my beloved and lawful wife Mary all mylandand Plantation whereon I now live during her natural life, atherdecease to be equally divided between my eight youngest childrentowit. General Notes (Wife)
Mary LaFoone Keith is one of the most fascinating andtroublesomecharacters in the Keith genealogy. At least three legendsoften andvividly retold in the Keith family are traceable to thisromanticwoman who lived almost a century; that the original ancestorwas ofnoble or even royal birth, dealt with earlier; that her cloakhad beendropped and found by British troops during the AmericanRevolutionwhile carrying a warning to the American encampment and waslaterreturned to her family after the war; and that she had fled withherchildren to a rock cavern in the woods and lived on roots andberriesduring the War of 1812, while her husband served as a corporaland herhome was burned. Because Cornelius Junior and Mary LaFoone Keith resided in what isnowGrayson County, Virginia, or in Surry County, North Carolina, formanyyears before, during, and after the American Revolution, farfromengagements of British and American troops, the stories ofherRevolutionary War heroism are hardly convincing. (Lateraccountsplacing them in South Carolina at the time of the Revolutionareutterly beyond reason.) The stories about the War of 1812 aremuchmore probable, however. Perhaps Mary LaFoone's heroic adventuresofspying on the British also took place during the War of 1812 andwereconfused in her own elderly accounts or in the repetitions ofherdescendents with tales of the Revolution.
