General Notes (Husband)
[bobspu.ged]
Individual note: Albert and Mattie established their home in Preston Co., WV; later moved to the Elkwater area of Randolph County. They moved to Oklahoma when most of their children did. The only ones of the 12 or so Kelly children who stayed were Dorothy (Wamsley) and Ida (Bell).
Albert and Mattie had 13 children -- 5 daughters and 8 sons.
"Prairie Fire" says, in an account of the history of Elk City, OK, written by Helen Burnett:
"Crowe was the first post office, though it got its name through error. It was supposed to have been named in honor of A.L. Crone, but the postal officials read the petition the wrong way, making it "Crowe." The Post Office, located three miles southwest of the present townsite on the Cisero Sitton homestead, was established in 1899, in Sitton's dugout. The location was later purchased by Albert Kelly, father of six sons: Will, Marshall, John, Ed, Clarence, and Olin, and four daughters: Dolly Wamsley, Ida Bell, Kate Allison, and Carrie Hall. "

General Notes for Child Clarence Kelly
[bobspu.ged]
Individual note: According to Russell Linger, Sr., Clarence Kelly was a store owner, first owning a store at Valley Head. Later, in partnership with his brother-in-law, Holt Crouch Wamsley, he bought the store at Huttonsville from Enoch Channell around 1918.
Russell Linger tells this story that Clarence Kelly was fond of relating:
While he was a storekeeper at Valley Head, one of his female customers was notoriously "light-fingered" -- regularly stealing his merchandise. For some time, however, he was unable to catch her in the act. One day just as she entered the store, he took an attractive clock, set the alarm to go off in about 10 minutes, and left it in a place where he was confident that she would not be able to resist it. Then he retreated to the back room, leaving her alone. Sure enough, when he came back to the counter, the clock was gone. But, as he had planned, the alarm soon went off -- from under the woman's dress!
=================================================== From "Prairie Fire -- a Pioneer History of Western Oklahoma":
Clarence, or "C" as he was known to his friends, came to Elk City in 1920. He was in business here then moved to Canute, where he had a mercantile store, a cotton gin and bought chickens to ship to New York City. One year he sent over one hundred car loads. He also farmed around Elk City and in West Texas. (p. 344)
[in an account of the history of Canute, OK, by Mary R. Lamm (p. 107)] :
The places of business that stand out in my memories the most are from about 1925 to 1930. The west side of Main Street was Keen's Merchandise; across the street to the north was the First State Bank; then Anderson's Grocery; Jack Duree's barber shop; Iles Cafe & Sundries, with rooms for rent upstairs; John Mason's telephone office, later owned by Ted Scott; C. Kelly's Merchandise; and across the street north of them, Hix's General Store and later John Albert's. It was destroyed by fire. On the east side of Main Street was Kupka's garage and filling station, later owned by Frank Mahl and his two sons, Mike and Frank; Kelly's home on main Street; Kilhoffer & Walter's Meat Market, groceries and cream station; Hickman's cafe; Kelly's filling station; Hank Kamphaus' Hardware & Implement, later a grocery store which bought poultry and cream.
Across the street and south was Lamm's General Store, later Edgar Martin's shoe repair shop; the Post Office; and Walter Patterson's garage. Just west of the bank was the lumber yard run by John Berger. On 66 Highway west was Kelly's Gin, which also bought chickens by the box cars from towns around the area and sold in New York. Then came the Chickasha Gin, the elevator started by Mike Kilmartin, later owned by Dan Carter and the Planter Gin. Across the street south of Dan Carter's was a cafe run by Frank Harper.
==================================================== From Lorene Bell Dodrill, Oct. 1997:
The following are notes about C. Kelly. The first part is a newspaper interview and the last section, my mother (Ota Marple Bell) wrote down during a visit he made to WV late in his life. (There is a reference to Aunt Pearl Snyder, who was also present.) He married my mother's sister, Jessie Marple, making him my uncle as well as Herb's great-uncle.
Clarence Kelly Notes:
The parents of Clarence Kelly, Albert and Mattie Kelley, moved to Elk City OK and farmed on a place they purchased. C. Kelly was the second of ten children and lived in WV until he was 42 years of age. He recalled a visit to his parents home in 1913. He drove a Model T. Ford and there were no roads. "We had to straddle ditches and ford creeks. It was August and there wasn't any grass, just blowing dust and sand and weeds." In 1920, Kelly and his family came to Elk City in a brand new 1919 Dodge. In WV he operated a general store and saw mills but decided the winters were too cold and lasted too long. And too, there wasn't enough money there. In the spring of 1921 he purchased the Canute Trading Company, a bankrupt store from Bob Kenn. In 1925 while living at Canute he built cotton gins, two at Burns Flat, one at Canute and One at Moorewood. During the busy season he operated the gins night and day but later sold them in 1944. For about 21 years Kelly operated "chicken cars" along the Rock Island railroad buying chickens all the way from Enid, Texas, for 45 cents a pound, shipping them to New York for six cents a pound and selling them for 65 cents a pound. With the advent of World War II the government placed a ceiling on chicken prices and it was no longer feasible to ship them to New York. For a time He farmed two and a half sections of land in Texas, raising wheat and cotton and also had some income from oil royalty production. In a newspaper interview when he was 92 years of age he stated that one of his favorite ventures and one in which he still dabbled was playing the stock market. "I usually make it pay off too, because if a stock gets sick I just put it in the hospital for a while until it gets well or dies, then I bury it", he kidded as he explained that when a stock goes down he holds on to it rather than selling at a loss. He said that because he was in so many different businesses and had to sign so many checks that he shortened his name fro Clarence to C. He recalled "I had one heck of a time growing up. I was raised in the mountains and didn't get to go to school because in the winter we cleared the land and in the summer we farmed.. But I can't feel sorry for myself. I'm doing pretty well for my age. At least I take care of myself, do all my own housework, cooking and ironing. At 92 he walked to town regularly for exercise and had lived alone since his wife Jessie's death five years before. ******************************** (Told to Ota Bell by C. Kelley) When I was a young teenager, I first worked for Eli Crouch for an average of 25 cents a day cutting brush on 125 acres of land. My father took the job for a sum of between$40 and $50. He and we boys did the work. Then I worked for Eli Crouch hoeing corn for 50 cents a day. During hay making he gave me 75 cents a day. We got up and milked the cows, strained the milk, and ate breakfast before daylight. Then to the hay field until dark, milking again and eating supper after dark. Reese Stalnaker had a store at Valley Head. When he went broke, I took over in my name since he couldn't do business in his own name. We bought Arbuckle coffee in red pound bags at $8.85 per 100 bags and sold it at 2 for 25 cents. I later kept store in the Snyder building and later in the one I operated the longest period of time. I built the house where Wilson Ware now lives with lumber which I got out up the hollow with John Kelly and Wilson Ware being two of the helpers. When one of my stores burned down I went broke and went to Kansas City where I worked for $1.25 a day packaging meat at a packing plant. You had to keep alert for if you let one piece get by without wrapping it, you were in trouble since the meat came in so fast. When I started by own store I borrowed $5000 from Jack Fretwell. My father had a dance at his house (on Dry Ridge on the mountain west of Oak Grove). Eliza Wamsley (Holt's sister and later Enoch Channell's wife) was staying at Hamilton Stalnaker's at Elkwater and I was courting her. Some drunks came to the dance. While they were dancing in the kitchen one of the drunks picked a fight with me. We went out on the porch and I was at the point of throwing him over the porch banister when the second drunk grabbed my feet and pulled me out on the ground.
Then both guys jumped on me and my father came out with an axe and made them quit. They threatened to get me if ever they met me again. It was daylight when I got Eliza back to her uncle's house in the buggy. I went on to Valley Head, got a gun in one pocket, a black jack in the other, got on my horse and rode down the road but was never challenged by the two men who had threatened me. Had they tried, I would have hurt someone. I could have whipped one for I was as strong as a mule, but I couldn't have whipped two without weapons. Then I went with Bertha Stalnaker, Webb Stalnaker's daughter (Webb was a sister to Grandmother Kelly) Bertha later married a Salisbury. I was walking her home from church on Point Mountain. About half way home we sat down on a log and decided to learn to smoke. As a result we both got sick and thought we would die. I was talking to Mary Crouch in the kitchen of her log house home which is near Dorse See's house. I hugged her and one of her parents looked in saw me. I thought I would faint because you were not allowed to hug a girl. I didn't even know what a woman looked like. Had never seen a woman's ankle. If a woman let you see her elbow or knee she was disgraced. I never thought I would amount to anything. Never expected to marry for I didn't think I would be able to support a wife. I went to Conley Run to church, got Jessie in my buggy and instead of taking her home for dinner, I took her to Valley Head to eat dinner at Bings Hotel, where I boarded while sleeping in my store for fear it, too, would burn down. When I took her home "Old Man" Marple ran me off and told me I couldn't come back for having been so indiscreet. I could walk her up the steep hill from church or drive her home in by buggy with her mother following behind on a horse and keeping an eye on every move. After Jessie and I were married, Pearl Fretwell stayed at our house one winter. I had a black horse and a buggy with rubber tires on the wheels instead of the metal ones like were on my other buggy. The horse was a beauty and held her head high and proud all the time. I put Jessie and Pearl in the buggy and I rode another horse and followed. When they had to cross a stream filled with high water they were scared but I knew the horse would go through all right. She wasn't like the one I had before I was married. I was driving him in a buggy with metal tires and he ran away on the Elkwater road to my father's home. I couldn't control him so I jumped out and had to walk four miles before I cought up with the horse. Bought Enoch Channell's store in Huttonsville and ran it until I went to Oklahoma (Wamsley's Store). I had $15,000 when I left for Oklahoma. (Aunt Pearl "I think that's a lot of money") Now, I give away more than that every year. (C. Kelly was a millionaire.) I always did the hard work and Jessie did the writing. I miss her so much because I had no education and it is hard for me to write. Man was made to love a woman. I can't remember ever crying but I sure can hurt and ache inside.
