General Notes (Husband)

Health: Diabetic, diagnosed when he was in his fifties.

Education: St. John's and St. James' Parochial Schools for Boys - run by a religious order of Brothers. Baltimore City Public School #45 - Eager and Greenmount

Lived at 510 E. Monument Street in 1892 and was a clerk by occupation. Lived at 811 Forrest Street in 1898 and at 719 Chase Street near McKim's Hill in 1900, all in Baltimore City.

He had to go to work at the age of twelve, so he went to night school and took correspondence courses to become an electrical engineer. Later he took a job in Puritan, Pennsylvania (on top of a mountain), near Altoona, in the coal mining area. He also served as a Justice of the Peace while there. He came back to Baltimore and was married in 1902, and he and Teresa returned to Puritan for about three years. Came back to Baltimore for good sometime in 1904.

While they were living in Puritan, Teresa came back to Baltimore to have their first child, Xavier, then returned to Pennsylvania, had another baby that was stillborn, and then returned to Baltimore.

Lived in an apartment at Eager Street and Greenmount Avenue, Baltimore City, over top of Joseph Kelly's saloon and package liquor store, which Gearge managed for him. When Joseph bought other saloons at Madison Street and Greenmount Avenue and Hillen and Forrest Streets, George also managed those.

In 1912, George opened his own saloon and restaurant, featuring a free lunch, at 405 N. Gay Street, two doors from Belair Market. The family lived in an apartment upstairs for about two years. This venture was not a success, so he went back to managing the three businesses for Joseph until Prohibition time.

He then opened an electrical supply, house wiring, and repair business - Star Electric Company -at Hillen Street and the Fallsway; and in 1918 moved to larger quarters at 609 Forrest Street. Josephine Kelly, his sister-in-law, helped manage the business, and him, too. She even insisted one naming his children.

George and Teresa lived at 893 Greenmount Avenue, at Eager Street; then an apartment at Madison Street and Greenmount Avenue, then 2536 Greenmount Avenue, where Joseph and Mary Watson were born. Then they moved to 405 N. Gay Street, then Homewood Avenue and Biddle Street, then 1132 Homewood Avenue until 1914. Moved to 38th Street in 1914, then to 3701 Greenmount Avenue, Waverly, two years later. George built four apartment buildings on this site - 3641, 3701, 3707, and 3711 Greenmount Avenue, and he and Teresa lived there until they died. George and his son, Gerard, who was deaf, managed the apartments, doing all the maintenance themselves. The apartments were nicknamed "The Tombstones" by some of the tenants because they were tall and skinny.

George was a diabetic, the disease was diagnosed when he was in his fifties. He always used saccarin and ate gluten bread, but he also cheated a lot on his diet.

He was confined to a wheelchair for a while before his death. He had a slight stroke nine months before his death and died of a heart attack at age 68.

He had a shore next to Peter B. Kelly's on Bear Creek, Turner's Station, Baltimore County, MD. The address was on Avondale Road. The land was part of the Seymour Estate. The shores were torn down after WW II, in the late 1940's and the Day Village Apartments were built there. The last house on Avondale Road belonged to the Milburn's - Lola and Everett "Piggy" and their two children, Everett and - they lived there year round. The area past Milburn's was called "Peter's Point". George's house was next to last - a big brown shingle house consisting of a living-dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom and a huge sunparlor, with windows on three sides and window seats that doubled for storage under the windows, also on three sides. Upstairs were three bedrooms. There was also a big screened porch across the front, and a large lawn leading down to the beach and the water. Next was a small house, usually rented to the Cullisons for the summer, and past that was Peter's luxurious home, sitting up on a hill overlooking the water. He had a porch around three sides, lots of trees and more than an acre of ground. Steps led down to the beach, with a rainwater shower at the foot of the steps. Inside were living room, dining room, kitchen (there was always a pot of crab soup on the stove and usually another pot with steamed crabs in it), at least three bedrooms and several bathrooms. All the furnishings were luxurious - satin bedspreads, chrystal and china everywhere in the dining room, antiques in the other rooms, etc. Out behind the house was a large carport, covered with grape vines, and a very high garage( it was full of lots of fishing equipment). Nearby was a knife grinding wheel and several smaller out buildings. A picnic table and benches were built around a huge maple tree on the lawn in front of the house. Next to Peter's house was one belonging to Daddy Graham, a black man. Up the road, Henry, another black man, ran a small store. For drinking water, 5 gallon bottles were filled at a gas station in Dundalk, but for other water there was a town pump about a half a mile up the road, towards Turner's Station. Turner's Station also had several stores for shopping. At the shores, there was always a motor boat, a row boat, and a canoe for everyone's use. Between Peter's and George's, a very large pier juted out into the water about one hundred feet. It was sturdy enough to hold a large truck being driven out on it. At the end was a diving board and to the side were steps leading down to the water. Around one of the large trees in Peter's front yard was a circular table and benches. At any time of day or evening, there would be people sitting there eating crabs. If the crabs ran out, someone would get in the boat, go out about 100 yards, and catch some more.

Two of George's pallbearers at his funeral were his nephews, Tom Shepperd and Marshall Watson.

General Notes (Wife)

Teresa attended the Balleyfeeney Junior Normal School on the Strokestown-Ruskey Road as a child. It was built in 1873 by Mahon, the landlord of Strokestown. Ballyfeeney Senior Normal School was built in 1866.

In the early part of the 1800's, the Mahon estate, Strokestown Park House, was owned by Henry Sandford Pakenham Mahon

Strokestown Park House is now open to the public along with the Famine Museum, housed in the carriage house.

Teresa also worshipped at the Kilglass RC Church, also on the Strokestown-Ruskey Road. The first Kilglass Church was built about 1405 and called St. Mary's; the third church was built in 1790, and the present church was built about 1896. The present one is called Sacred Heart.

She was a monitor at age 14 in the school in Ballyfeeney, where the "great and pompous school inspectors" called her the "Great Oak" of the school for her precocious mind. By then she had memorized most of the New Testament and much of the Old Testament. She was known in Ireland as the smart one of the family. She did not continue her schooling because of poor health. She had catarrh and anemia, and had had rickets as a child, hence she was bowlegged.

According to her, " Fairbanks, where she was born, was an estate with four or five houses on the outskirts of the village. She attended Sacred Heart Church there, and walked past Kilglass Lake on her way. This whole area was very interested in horses." To the west of her home was Kilglass Lake, and to the right was the Shannon River. This explains her love of the water and her love of the shore property on Bear Creek in Baltimore County. I don't remember her swimming there, but she loved to sit and look at the water and admire her flowers.

She lived on S. Ann Street when she first came to Baltimore, and in the 700 block of Eager Street before she was married. She attended St. John's RC Church in Baltimore City.

She left Ireland with her mother and brothers and sisters in 1887 and arrived in the port of Philadelphia on 24 October 1887 aboard the vessel, Lord Gough, out of Liverpool.

She was married on 23 April 1902 by the Reverend Martin O'Donoghue at St. John's. Reverend Monsignor George William Devine was pastor of St. John's at the time. He was pastor for 35 years. He was also born in Co. Roscommon, in 1843, came to America in 1846, and died 29 August 1923.

Seven hundred people were invited to the wedding. The attendants were: George Wilson Davis, George Watson's cousin; Harry Watson, George's brother; Frank Fitzpatrick, who lived on Eager Street; Joseph Kelly, Teresa's brother; Teresa Fitzpatrick, who made her wedding dress ( she was the aunt of Dr. Vincent de Paul Fitzpatrick); Alice Kelly, Teresa's sister; Teresa Schissler, and her sister, Mamie Schissler. The Schissler's lived on Pratt Street in East Baltimore. Teresa had a pointe d'espret dress for the wedding ceremony and another dress for the afternoon reception made of pink taffeta and velvet.

She had several cousins:
Father Richard Law
Alice Cunningham Shehee - a widow who lived at 394 2nd St., Brooklyn, New York City in 1931.She was born in the U.S., but her parents came from Ireland. She had a brother, James, and a niece, Kathleen Cunningham. Her mother was a sister of Jane McGuire.
Dr. Constantine McGuire - born in Ireland, but raised and educated by an aunt and uncle in Washington, D.C. He was an economic advisor to the President's Council on Economics, particularly of South America. He attended Harvard and was with the Carnegie Institute of Economics. He also helped organize the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He brought his mother over from Ireland in the 1960's when she was over 90 years of age and she died a few years later. He lived at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. in 1931. He lived on Long Island, NY after retirement and died in 1969 or 1970.

Her favorite flowers were petunias, four o'clocks, sweet allysum, and arteretum. She always had miniature pink rambler roses and mock orange blossom bushes. At her home in Fairbanks, Ireland, wild pink rambler roses grow today, and all of Ireland grows petunias.

She and George honeymooned in Puritan, Pennsylvanis, where he was working at the time. It was near Altoona and a mining town. Only one other resident spoke English - a Mr. Campbell, who was President of the mines. Teresa could not stand the cold mountain climate and long, lonely winters, so she returned to Baltimore.

Before marriage, she went ice skating in Patterson Park, Baltimore City, on the lake with her brothers. She wore long skirts.

When Joseph was born prematurely he was so small and delicate (his twin had died) that Terest took Xavier, Regina, Gerard, abd the new baby to Westminster - Schaeffer's Farm on Uniontown Road - for three months of country air. On the way back, the train was wrecked at Walbrook Station and they had to take a cab to Hillen Station because George was waiting for them there.

The whole fmily lived on Norwood Avenue in Catonsville, Baltimore County, (out in the country) for three months, before they moved back in to the city and lived on Gay Street.

She believed that children should not be rewarded for success in school - it was expected of them - and they usually fulfilled her expectations. She was very fond of her children and never let any faults be seen in public. All punishing was done at home and privately.

She always had a knitting bag with her and a project in progress. She did a lot a work on circular needles using boucle yarn. Her knitting bag always had an apple or a bunch of red grapes in it, so her knitting always smelled like fruit. She purchased her yarns at the Betty Blue Shop in Waverly, Baltimore City, in later years.

She had beautiful snow white hair in later life. This seems to be a family trait with both the Kelly's and the McGuire's.

Kilglass is said to be an excellent place to fish because of the Shannon River and the numerous lakes. The countryside is dotted by lakes and rivers and this peaceful setting proved a major attraction for anglers. Kilglass Lake produced a Perch that was as Irish record for many years. The lake also holds fine Pike and Rudd.

Kilglass Lake is also renowned for an ancient legend which states that deep within its waters is buried a mysterious treasure. The treasure is reputed to have been deposited in the lake many centuries ago by monks, who were about to have their monastery plundered. They felt that Kilglass Lake was a safe hiding place and the treasure has, according to legend, lain in the lake's bottom ever since.

General Notes for Child Xavier Sebastian Joseph Watson

Health: He had several nervous breakdowns and bouts of depression: at the age of twelve; in college; after his marriage; during his wife's last illness; and several times after her death. As a young boy, he would get so frustrated and depressed if things didn't go his way that he would pound his fists on the wall. Once he even put his fists through the wall at 3701 Greenmount Avenue. His greatest fear was to die in a mental institution - he didn't.

General Notes for Child George Gerard Majella Watson

Alias: Gerard

Health: Diabetic. Deaf from infantile paralysis at the age of 3 months.

Gerard was deaf due to a bout of infantile paralysis (polio), so the story goes, at the age of three months. He attended St. Francis School For The Deaf, in Irvington, Baltimore County, from the age of four. He then attended St. Rita's High School For The Deaf in Cincinnati, Ohio. St. Francis School was at Biddle and McCullough Streets , in Baltimore City, first. Then in Irvington, and then moved to Towson. It was run by the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart Order of nuns.

General Notes for Child Rita Jane Marie Watson

Health: Hard of hearing from whooping cough

Rita was sick about six weeks before she died around Easter time. She started having problems with her feet, then toes, then ankles, etc. Fluid formed in the sac aroung her heart. Regina was in Union Memorial Hospital at the time, recovering from burns. Her parnets were there visiting Ragina when Rita got worse at home. Xav decided to get her to the hospital - he fixed the back seat of the Packard car into a bed. He picked Rita up in his arms, she slumped over, the fluid sac had burst, and she died.
