He led the Mercian campaign to overthrow Northumbrian hegemony in 658 and invaded Wessex in 674. He gave the Isle of Wight to King Ethelwalh of Sussex.

On his father's death the throne was taken by Ethelred as he was too young to rule. In 697 there were rebellions south of the Humber and he was declared king there in 702. Two years later Ethelred died and Coenred succeeded him as king of Mercia. He was unsuited to the royal life, however, and abdicated in 709 in favour of Ethelred's son Ceolred. Soon after he left England to become a monk in Rome and dedicated the rest of his life to spiritual works.
