JOHN PHILIP REPLOGLE, POLITICAL ACTIVIST:
ESTABLISHING AN IDENTITY

The purpose here is to provide an analysis of the esse n t i a l records sofar identified and composing what is kn o w n ab ou t an early resident ofMaryland named John Phil i p Re plogl e . In the early documents his name isoften gi ve n a s Phili p R eplogle. His presumed father, John Rineh art Repl ogle (Jo hann es Reinhard Reblogel in German spell ing ) wa s also give nth e name John at birth and seldom us ed i t the reafter. Th e fir st namegiven a child was a bap tisma l nam e and was no t regul arly used thereafter.
First, the background of the family and a stateme n t o f t h e problem isgiven. Secondly, a review of the av ai labl e ma jo r records used in thestudy of John Philip a n d the f amil y i s discussed. Finally, a chronologyof th e a ctivitie s o f Joh n Philip is presented, with source s indi cated and comm ents n oted as necessary, to provid e a tenta tive solut ion t o thepr oblem; a final solutio n will proba bly never b e know n.
It has gradually become evident John Philip Replogl e w a s s o mething of apolitical activist. A list of suc h acti vi tie s i ncludes the following:
In 1777 he was charged with being a deserter from th e M a r y land militiaduring the Revolutionary War.
In 1781 he was administered an oath to not bear arms a g a i n st the Britisharmy by a secret group of loyalists.
Also in 1781 he turned in John Parkes who was implic a t e d i n a loyalistplot.
In 1798 he was registered in the 5th congressional dis t r i c t (Baltimore)for 1798 voting.
At some point before 1824 he probably resided at Washi n g t o n, DC, anddied there.
His wife was buried at Congressional Cemetery, Chris t P r o t estantEpiscopal Church, Washington, DC
While none of these taken alone seems unusual, taken to g e t h er they form apattern indicating he took an activ e p a r t i n political events of theperiod.
BACKGROUND
"Recurrent war, fortification, and anxiety"
It is in Alsace that written records mentioning the Reb l o g e l familybegin. In the first Lutheran parish recor d s o f So ul tz (which begin asearly as 1595) it is record e d tha t Mat ter n Reblogel died in Soultz priorto 1617, a n d his s on Han s i s married there in 1602. Consider wha t k ind ofpl ace i t was:
