INSTANTLY KILLED
Julius E. Smith Meets Death in Southern Railway Yards
He Was Tightening Bolts on Fish Plates When He was Knocked Down and Run Over.
BODY FRIGHTFULL MANGLED
Julius E. Smith, aged 30 years, a section hand in the employ of the Southern railway, was run over and instantly killed at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the Southern railway yards at Citico. The details of the tragedy are as follows:
At 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon Section Foreman C.N. Mitchell directed Smith to proceed alone to the Belt railway crossing at the northern entrance to the yard and to there occupy himself in tightening the bolts and fish-plates of the track at that point.
While so engaged and stooping over, it appears that he failed to notice the approach of ten cars, which one of the switch engines was then backing into the yard. The front car struck him, knocking him down, after which the wheels of seven cars passed over his arms and body in the region of his heart, killing him instantly and mangling his body.
The remains were brought to Sharp's morgue in their ambulance, and are being prepared for burial, which will occur today. Deceased had lived in this section for many years and was an old employe (sic) of the road. He leaves a wife and three children; all of the latter being quite young.
(Further note by Gloria Askey Kerns, granddaughter. As far as my mother, Dora Lee Smith, [she was borth in 1899 and only 11 months old at the time this accident occurred] knew, Julius and Maggie had only two children, Julius Marshall Smith [b. 1892] and herself. My cousin, Wilma Smith McArthy [daughter of Julius M. Smith], concurs. Her father mentioned only my mother as a sibling.)
Text of a letter from Julius to his father, Gideon A. Smith, December 31, 1899.
"Chattanooga, Tenn.)
Dec. 31, 1899. Mr. G.A. Smith
Dear Father Brother and Sisters, with pleasure I will write you all a Letter to inform you how we are getting along. We are all well at present and doing very well. We have moved to Chattanooga. We live in a section house. We get our wood and house rent free. I will get a dollar and a quarter a day after the first of Feb. I have rented the place that I bought. I get $4.50 for one house and $2.00 for the other. We have hydron (sic, 'hydrant'?) water to use and the house we live in has 4 rooms. We got a Letter from Mr. LaBoon's folks last Sunday saying that he was worse and that he hadn't spoken in two weeks. We didn't get the Letter for a week after it was wrote and haven't heard any thing more. I was up at Avondale today and Jay's wife was right sick. She was in bed all day yesterday. She is looking to be confined in March. Jay told me that he got a Letter from Hampton LaBoon the other day saying that you was wanting to borrow money. He said he thought you had got him to write to him to know if he would loan you some money. He has told me several time that he had a $1000 in the Easley Bank that he put it in there before he left there. His wife says that he ain't got a cent there. She has got about $700 in the First National Bank of Chattanooga. He said he though he would let you have what he had at Easley at 8 percent if you would give him a mortgage on the place. I don't think I ever saw a bigger liar or rascal than he is if you was to have anything to do with him and he could ever catch you in a place where he could pitch you and sell the place he would do it. I have heard him say several times that he would like to have the lower place and that you would never pay for the upper place. How much do you still owe on it yet. Uncle Bennett was at my house not long ago. He said they were all well and doing the same you wrote me that the . . at the church wanted to know if I wanted them to retain my membership there or grant me a Letter of dismissal. You may tell them to give me a Letter and direct it to the Central Baptist Church, corner of McCallie and Palmeto (sic), Chattanooga. I will close for this time. Write as soon as you get this. I remain, your affectionate son. As ever, Julius E. Smith"
