JOE LAY Joseph Lewis LAY was born April 10, 1884 in the Powell River Valley of Claiborne County, TENNESSEE. He was the seventh child of Elijah and Mary Ann PETREE LAY. As a young boy he floated down the Tennessee River on a barge to Rankin's Cove with his family. At eight years old he traveled to ARIZONA on an immigrant train. It was on this trip that he decided on his lifelong occupation. He wanted to be a cowboy. A neighbor gave him a "dogie" calf and when his father's cow had twin calves, his father gave them to him, together with a white heifer, so Joe was in the cattle business. When the big snow of December 1898 came, Joe put his cattle in the cornfield and they all died from eating smut on the corn. After losing his whole herd, Joe irrigated the alfalfa fields while his father worked away from home, and saved enough money to buy more cattle. His brand at that time was (a symbol representing) "T F open A" Soon afterward he had matrimonial ideas and had to sell his cattle to get money to build a house on the place his father had bought. Later he bought the (symbol) "Flying U Quarter Circle," brand from William LOY. I guess the daughter was included in the deal, for on December 23, 1906 Joe LAY and Inez LOY were married at the HURST ranch. In 1908 the family made another move, this time to Sedona. Elijah LAY homesteaded forty acres on the east side of the creek, south of the bridge and Joe took forty acres joining it farther down. They built two houses on those homesteads. Elijah and Joe LAY sold their homesteads to L.E. HART and his son, Ed, about 1913, and sold the Flying U cattle to Ira HART. Soon afterwards they bought the (symbol) "Figure 2 Bar," cattle and the Clay PARK ranch from Walt and Lee VAN DEREN. C.B. WILSON, an attorney in Flagstaff, said at the time, if it were not for the fellows south of town trading so much he would starve to death. In 1917 the LAY families sold their ranch and cattle to Fred and Les MICKLE. The William LOY family sold their interest in the XL cattle and the two families bought adjoining farms at Cornville. The senior LOYS and LAYS spent the rest of their lives there. After living on the Cornville ranch forty-five years and raising and educating seven children, the Joe LAYs moved to Cottonwood to retire. On December 23, 1976, Joe and Inez celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. In 1981 at the age of 97, Joe LAY passed away and Inez followed in 1986 at the age of 96. Both are buried in Cottonwood Cemetary.
