BIO: Evidently, James had had a relationship with Caroline Keely, the aunt of Annetta Ault, five years before he married Annetta. In May, 1883, "The Rochester Sentinel" carried an article revealing the "social sensation" caused when Caroilne's brother, Samuel Keely, had Johnson arrested on a bastardy charge. Per the article, Caroline's father had accepted $100 from Johnson and had awarded an indemnifying bond, securing him from any loss of prosecution of the case, but the brother refused to accept the settlement and pushed for the arrest. Per the article, James Johnson had been an agent for fruit trees in the Fulton County area for two years prior to 1883. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

BIO: Five years before the marriage of "Nettie" to James F. JOHNSON, the "Rochester Sentinel" Saturday, May 12, 1883, carried the following: Something of a sensation was created in social circles Thursday evening by the arrest of James F. Johnson on a charge of bastardy preferred by Miss Carolina Keely, youngest daughter of James Keely. Johnson is a young man who has spent much of his time in this county for the past two years as an agent for fruit trees...the father accepted $100.00 and gave Johnson an indemnifying bond, securing him against any loss of prosecution of the case... Mr. Samuel Keely, brother of the girl...would not suffer that kind of settlement (and caused the arrest to be made)...
Compiler's Note: The "Carolina" mentioned above was Caroline Keely, Annetta's aunt, sister to Mary J. Keely Ault. Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

BIO: Clarence and Mary Ault visited compiler's family in Jeffersonville and the Gilchrists were welcomed into the Ault home a few times during compiler's childhood. The farm near Tippecanoe, IN where the Ault family lived, had been owned by Mary Swihart Ault's parents. Mary taught school for many years, as well as caring for a farm house and her family. After Clarence died in 1985, The Ault's son, Bob, continued to farm "the Swihart place" as it was called by the area natives. Wilma Foltz transcribed the obituary of Clarence and sent it to compiler. ******************************************* "C. Clarence Ault, 80, 5768 19th Road, Tippecanoe, died at 11 p.m. Sunday at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth, after a lengthy illness. A retired farmer, he also was a retired employee of the R.R. Donnelly Lakesid Press at Warsaw. Mr. Ault was born Jan. 22, 1905 in Fulton County to John and Mary Gilchrist Ault and was a lifetime area resident. He was married in December of 1936 to Mary M. Swihart who preceded him in death June 26 of this year. He was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethern. Surviving are two sons; Robert Ault, Tippecanoe, and Larry Ault, Mentone; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Walnut Church of the Brethern with Rev. Gary Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the Brethern Cemetery. Friends may call at Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, from 2 till 4 and 6 till 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to time of services Wednesday." *************************** Until fire destroyed their farm house, Byron and Emma Gilchrist owned a farm very close to the Swihart place. During summers before Byron's retirement from construction work, the family spent most of their weekends on the farm, where compiler visited during summer vacation. Larry and Bob Ault were frequently at the Gilchrist farm. After Byron retired, he and Emma sold their home in South Bend and made the farm their permanent residence until the fire forced them to move elsewhere. The two families maintained a close relationship until illness and advancing age limited their activities. Until the examination of the 1920 census for Fulton County, IN, the name of this second cousin of compiler's had been recorded only as "C. Clarence" AULT. That census record showed his name as "Charles C." Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

BIO: Per the Belmont County History, Frederick AULT moved his family to Fulton County, IN. The history reports that he died in 1847, but does not specify the place of death. The article says that the first three of Philip's children were born in York Co., PA. Frederick would have been the second. Mrs. HATCHER writes in her Jan., 1996 letter that she believes Frederick is her direct ancestor. She says that Frederick had a son named Hammond, who was married in Belmont County, OH, but Hammond's place of death has not been found. Mrs. HATCHER also says that Frederick and Christina died in Fulton Co., IN. The Peattie History mentions a son, Frederick, who was born to Philip AULT at Valley Forge, PA in 1800. Philip and family, according to Peattie, migrated to Belmont County, OH in 1812 (10 years later than the Belmont County History reports). Frederick's son, Henry, was born in Belmont County in 1826. In 1854, Henry supposedly moved from Belmont County to Huntington County, IN with his wife, Susanna Freck, where their son Joseph F. was born in 1858. Peattie reports that Henry lived in Fulton County for a number of years prior to 1896 when his History was published, but he does not indicate that Frederick AULT was ever a resident of INDIANA. Per the "FAMILY TREE MAKER'S ..." census index for 1830, there was a Frederick AULT in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH in 1830. Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED Per the Belmont County history, Christina was a second cousin to Frederick.

BIO: Peattie's "History of Fulton County, 1896..." contains the following information about Henry AULT, father of Joseph AULT. ...The father of our subject, Henry AULT, who for a number of years has been a resident of Rochester, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, in 1826, and learned the trades of carpenter and millwright. In 1854 he removed to Huntington County, Ind., and enlisted at Indianapolis, with the boys in blue of company H, Forty-seventh Indiana infantry, which regiment was attached to the army of the Potomac. After thirteen months of service he was discharged from field duty on account of disability, and transferred to the hospital service, acting as hospital steward at Camp Wyckliffe, Ky. Bu order of the division surgeon he was given charge of hospital No. 2, at Louisville, Ky. and later was placed in charge of the convalescent corps, returning home with some of "the boys". Henry Ault was married in 1849, to Susanna FRECK, a native of Fairfield County, Ohio, and a daughter of Joseph FRECK, a farmer of German descent.
Henry and Susanna AULT appear in household #72-76 on the 1880 Census for the Town of Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana. Per that enumeration, their two daughters, Eva and Mary H. had both married and left the home. Listed on this census in the home were Joseph F., age 22; Delila, age 17 (both listed as "teacher"; and Christena, age 76, born in PA. Christena would have been Henry's mother, wife of Frederick, who evidently died before 1880. The 1920 enumeration for Fulton County, IN shows a Henry AULT, 93, with wife Lucy C., 72. Both Henry and Lucy report they were born in OH; Henry's parents were born in PA. This seems likely to be Henry, son of Frederick AULT, with a second wife, but there has been no real evidence to support this idenification. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

BIO: Early in 1997, Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler several photocopied obituaries that she had found in a new compilation at the Fulton County Pub. Lib. Per Mrs. Foltz, a retired judge (name not given) and his wife were in the process of gathering all of the old obituaries from back issues of Rochester newspapers and compiling them into book form. The rather lengthy obituary for George F. BARCUS was among those copied.
George Frank BARCUS, 71, one of the best known business men of the city, died at six o'clock Sunday morning in his home at 312 West Third Street, death being due to asthma and complications. Mr. BARCUS had been in failing health for the past two year but his condition had only been regarded as serious two weeks. George Frank, son of Henry A. and Mary (QUIGG) BARCUS, was born in Columbiana county, Ohio on October 8, 1859, and came with his parents to Rochester when a child and the remainder of this life was spent here. On October 30, 1880 he was married to Miss Lila AULT. When a young man Mr. BARCUS learned the plastering trade and for many years he was engaged in the contract plastering business. Later he became engaged in business selling lime, cement and building supplies and the buying and selling of hides and furs. His business establishment was located at the corner of Main and Third Street for many years. The building occupied by Mr. BARCUS was only recently torn down and a filling station erected and Mr. BARCUS was building a new structure on the adjoining lot in which he had planned to carry on his business. Mr. BARCUS was very active in civic and political interests in the city and county. He served as chairman of the Republican party in the county for one year and three terms on the city council, twice by election and once by appointment. He was a member of the Knights of Phthias, I.O.O.F. and Mt. Horab Encampment lodges and always took an active part in all the work of the three orders. Besides his wife he is survived by five brothers and two sisters, Mrs. H.W. NISWONGER, of Fort Wayne, John [BARCUS] of Owosso, Michigan; James Q. [BARCUS] Albany, New York; William [BARCUS] of LaSalle, Illinois; Mrs. Rose CUSHMAN of San De Andro, California; Arthur J. [BARCUS], Des Moines, Iowa and I.O. [BARCUS] of Chicago. Mr. BARCUS death is the first in a family of eight children. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the home with Rev. D.S. PERRY officiating. Burial will be made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery and the I.O.O.F. lodge will have charge of the service.

Born Aug. 8, 1907 in Fulton county to John and Mary Gilchrist Ault, he had lived in the area all his life. He married Mildred Poland on Aug. 28, 1942, in Argos. A retired electrician, he had owned the Tri-County Insulating Co. in Plymouth. He was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethern and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife; brothers Harry of Knox and Clarence of Argos. Three brothers had preceded him in death."
Compiler's Note: Apparently, Mrs. FOLTZ has combined two obituaries into a single photocopy. There is no division between the two except for a slight deviation in the spacing between lines.
"Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday for Eldon L. Ault, 75, formerly of plymouth, who died Sunday morning at Punta Gorda, Fla. The Rev. Paul Nye will officiate the services at the Bonine Funeral Home, Culver. Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday and memorials may be made to the Walnut Church of the Brethern."
Evidently, Eldon and Mildred had no children. The 1920 Census for Fulton County, IN, shows Eldon as the youngest of five sons enumerated in John and Mary AULT's household. Eldon was 12 years of age at that time. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999
