George Norman T enlisted 25 May 1861 at Memphis, TN in Co L, 5th Tenn Infantry Regt. Ann Barbara Leip Taylor his wife applied for his pension 1912. Granted pension # 2297 in Oct 1912. After the death of Abagail George N married a sister of Abagail's Sarah E Dalton Smith. No record of a divorce for Sarah and George found in MO. [82013.ftw]

George and wife, Barbara Ann Leip Taylor gave 3/4 acres of land to the School District in Fulton Co., Ky. and from that the Taylor School was built in N W 1/4 Sec. Twp. 1 R 3 W from the 1914 map in Fulton Co. Court House.[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

In the 1870 Census he is list as George N., 44 years of age, farmer, born in Virginia. It also shows that his mother-in-law, listed as Mary Lipe age 80 lived with him and Anna Barbara. The Fulton/Hickman Genealogical Journal 1992 Volume 8 No. 1 pg. 29. Abstracts, Fulton Co.Wills page 184. G.N. Taylor wrote will 29 Oct 1883. General Notes (Wife)

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged] Thelma Leip, her sister, says that Bonnie was a sickly, nervous child. She missed a year of school when she was in the fifth grade. It is possible that her middle name was Louzelle after one of her sister's close friends in college. Bonnie and Jim went to Union City for their honeymoon. When they were first married they lived with Jim's Aunt Ella and Uncle Hardin. Aunt Ella was a sister of Jim's mother, and she agreed to raise Jim when his mother died and then his father moved to Detroit. Living with Jim's aunt and uncle was not easy for Bonnie. Aunt Ella tended to treat her more as a child than as an adult. After the war broke out in December of 1941 Jim went to Nashville to get a job. He worked for Vultee and built airplanes. The twin fuselage fighter P-38 was one of the planes he worked on. When Jim went to Nashville, Bonnie went to live with her brother and his family. She worked as a waitress in his restrurant for a few months until she could join Jim in Nashville. Bonnie worked for years as a Clerical Supervisor for a large department store, Cain-Sloan.

Fulton/Hickman Genealogical Journal Winter 1998 p.29 Obion County Clerk's Minutes on page 102 Nicols Leap was a hand to the overseer on Moscow Road from Schuck's old place to state line. Frederick Leak was also a hand. Minutes of 4 Nov 1850. Fulton/Hickman Genealogical Journal 1987 Vol III No. 2 1860 Fulton Co. Census, page 54 July 12: 350 Leah, Frederick, 28, m, 0, 300, Ger; Ellen 25, f, TN. The 1870 Census gave Frederick's age as 42 and the he was born in Baden, Germany. Ellen F. as 44 and born in Virginia. The children were Mary S. 9, James A. 8, Barbara E. 2 and Magdaline two months. All the children were born in Kentucky. The 1880 Census list Frederick as 52 years of age and lived in Lodgetown district, Fulton Co., KY. Tax Lists Fulton Co. 1857 Fred Leip had no land, 2 horses or mules, Total $80. He was not listed 1855, 56, 58 through 63. 1864 Fred Leip had 1 horse, 1 mule, 2 cows, 1 enrolled in the militia, 400 bushel of corn, Total $100. 1867 Fritz Leip 75 acres, 1 horse, 9 cows, 1 hog, 500 bushel of corn, 50 bushel of wheat Total $800. Fritz's third wife was Lucy Taylor. Thelma L. Leip Martin didn't think Ellen and Lucy were related. Actually Lucy's first husband was related to Ellen. After Ellen died in 1881 and Fritz married Lucy, James said he would hear Lucy telling his father that James should leave home. When James told his father he was going away his father said no, that James was there first. James left telling his father that he had married her he would have to live with her. James went to live with his father's aunt, Barbara. He lived with her and helped on her farm until he purchased his sisters' share of his father's farm when Fritz died in 1893. Fritz is buried in cemetery at Harmony Methodist Church. His grave marker indicates that he came to Kentucky in 1840. Actually he and his parents came to the U. S. in 1840 and first settled in Obion Co. TN. They moved up to Fulton Co. , KY most likely in 1855 or 56.

General Notes (Wife)

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

In 1870 Ellen was listed as 44 years of age and born in Virginia. Ellen and her parents were born in VA according to the 1880 census Volume 9, sheet 16, line 29, ED201. Ellen is listed as 54 years of age.[roper.taylor.FTW]

General Notes for Child Mary Susan Leip

[Leip.ged] In the 1870 Census Mary S. is listed as 9 years of age and born in KY. In the 1880 Census she is listed as Mary and age 18. It seems her nickname was Mollie. She married Sam Binford. Mary Susan Leip listed in the small bible written in German as born June 28,1861. The next entry is James A. Leip; then Barbara (can't make out the middle name); then Anna Maggie Mae(?) Leip. A Mollie Binford is listed in the big bible as dying Sept 7 1898. The grave marker indicates that a daughter Mollie was born September 1 1898 and died Nov 10, 1898. It seems that the birth of Mollie claimed both mother and daughter. The date of death of Mary Susan in the family Bible is September 17, 1898. The gravestone lists September 7, 1898.

General Notes for Child James Aldophus Leip

[Leip.ged] The 1870 Census lists James A. as 8 years of age and born in KY. In the 1880 Census he is listed as 16 years of age and a farmer living at home with his parents. James mother, Ellen Taylor Leip, died one day after his seventeenth birthday. Soon after his father remarried he left home because he and his step-mother, Lucy Taylor Leip, could not get along. At night through the thin walls of their house he could hear her pleading with his father to make James leave. James father did not want him to leave home, but agreed when James insisted. James went to live with his father's sister, Aunt Barbara. He helped her with her farm after her husband George died. He didn't marry for several years. In later years after James father had died he allowed his step-mother to come and live in his home. Thelma remembers her well. She says "Lucy was a card. She was funny." James had three sisters. He bought their share of his father's farm and later bought additional acres to bring the total to 200 acres. Before he married Etta he built a three room home with a large porch for them to live in. He built the big house seen in Sister's pictures in 1906. Wilis D was born there. After moving to Riceville and renting the farm for several year James sold the farm to Johnny and Ruby Taylor. After Johnny died Ruby became a recluse and filled the house with trash. She kept chickens and pigs inside. After she died her son burned the house.

James made some bad land investments and during the depression he lost everything. Thelma and Willis D wound up trying to support the family in a rented home in Fulton. He died of cancer of the mouth in 1931. He is buried at Harmony Methodist Church.

General Notes for Child Barbara E (Betty) Leip

[Leip.ged] In the 1870 Census She is listed as Barbara E. and 2 years of age and born in KY. In the 1880 Census Barbara is listed as 12 years of age. Married a Taylor, son Johnny?

WD has a note he took while talking to Sister stating that Barbara married a Jackson. James Adolphus' aunt Barbara married a Taylor.

General Notes for Child Anna Maggie Mae Leip

[Leip.ged] In the 1870 Census she is listed as Magdaline and 2 months old, born in May in KY. In the 1880 Census she is listed as Anna and 10 years of age. Sister told WD in 1995 that Anna married a Binford. However, it was probably Jones. Actually it was both, I learned later. Anyhow Sister said that Lonnie was one of Anna's three sons. Anna gave Lonnie to Nora, Jimmy Morrow's sister, who had no children. Nora and her husband raised Lonnie as their own. They left their place to Lonnie and later the Morrow's sued (1939 or 1940) claiming that as the surviving blood relatives they should have inherited it. The Morrows' won and Sister has always felt it was wrong.

General Notes (Wife)

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged]

Thelma, her daughter, tells many stories about Etta. She was a happy, funny woman who loved to entertain. Most Sundays after church several people would come home with them for dinner. She was a wonderful cook who especially liked to bake. Etta's pies and cakes were renown in the region. The depression had brought hard times for Etta and her family. He husband had to sell the farm and town house to cover debts for bad investments. He had died in 1931 a slow agonizing death with cancer Etta was living with Thelma and Bonnie Lou in a house on Norman St. near where it intersects West State Line. Willis D. and Laura and their son WD had lived there also, but were living in Paducah when Etta died. Etta told Thelma the night she died she wished she could only see her little boy (WD) before she died. Unfortunately, he and his parents didn't arrive from Paducah until after she had died. They returned to live there after her death to help Thelma and Bonnie. Etta was buried at Harmony Methodist Church on a cold rainy day. The hearse couldn't make it up the hill to the church and the men in attendance had to help by pushing. Even though he was only three and half years old WD has remembered standing by the fireplace in the bedroom where his grandmother lay dead, the frightening quiet and darkness of the inside of the church and the casket in the front of the church all his life. One story is that Etta's middle name Usher was in honor of the doctor who delivered her. It is interesting to note that there is an Adam S. Usher on the 1875 Tax List for Hickman Co., KY where she was born.

General Notes for Child Willis D. Leip

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged]

Restaurant owner, chemical process operator. Willis D (the D was only an initial) was born on a farm in Fulton Co., the western most county in Kentucky. He was named after Dr. Willis who delivered him and the D was for his father who was called Dop, a nickname for Adolphus. He was the fourth child born to Adolphus and Etta. The first two died before he was born. His sister, Thelma, was six a few days after he was born. He grew up and worked with his father on the farm until they moved to Riceville. While the family lived there another sister, Bonnie Lou, was born in March of 1920. His white hair as a child earned him the nickname, Cotton, which stayed with him the rest of his life. He and his Sister attended grade school in the country near his home. He finished high school at Fulton, and went to college at Murray Teachers College. He was primarily interested in studying science and math, and didn't take too much else. After his first semester in college he started working in a restaurant near campus and took only a few courses. Before he finished finished his second year his father's health was failing, so Cotton dropped out of school to work. He stayed in Murray to work and to continue courting Laura Erwin. On February 29, 1928 they went to Paris, Tennessee and got married. His sense of humor was such that he would think it was appropriate for a Leip to marry on Leap Year day. After they married and Laura finished her last semester they moved to Fulton, KY. He worked at Smith's restaurant and Laura taught home economics at South Fulton High School. Willis D either worked for someone else in a restaurant or operated his own in Fulton, Paducah, Mayfield and Wickliffe. When he was 38 he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He sold the restaurant he owned in Wickliffe, KY to the bank where he had borrowed the money to open it. Six weeks after being drafted the Army sent him home, bad legs. The bank wanted a lot more than they paid him for the restaurant so rather than go back into restaurant work he took a job making TNT at the Kentucky Ordinance Works located between Kevil and Paducah. After the war he moved his family to East St. Louis and took a job with Monsanto Chemical Co. where he worked until he died an early death in 1960. A chemical that had been made in his department turned out to be a powerful carcinogenic. Most of the men he worked with died of cancer of the bladder. His actual cause of death was heart failure, but there was little doubt that the chemical had contributed to his many health problems. He was crazy about his grandchildren, but he didn't live long after they were born. In fact, Vera and WD were expecting their third child when he died, but they didn't know until it was too late to tell him. Willis D. loved Christmas. He was always the first one up Christmas morning. Then he would go around waking everyone up saying "Christmas Gift, Christmas Gift". One year WD sat down by the tree and carefully examined each one of his gifts and then guessed what it was. He was right about all of them so even though money was tight Willis D. bought him another gift. WD felt badly and never guessed what presents might be again. Willis D. always had a twinkle in his eye and maintained his wonderful sense of humor right up until the last. Life was never easy for him, but he still had a love of life. He is buried Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery next to his parents. The church is in a rural area near Crutchfield, KY

General Notes for Child Bonnie Luzelle Leip

General Notes (Wife)

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged]

Linda is buried Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery, Crutchfield, KY, with her mother and father. Linda suffered brain damage at birth which caused retardation. She was able to function on about the fifth grade level. She evidently suffered a mild stroke when she was about 6 which effected the left side of her body. Her leg and arm was slightly smaller than the right ones. She had a tumor on her ovary removed at age 23. She developed cancer which was diagnosed on the 13th of November of 1974. It spread rapidly and she died on Christmas day. In spite of all her problems she was a loving, accepting person who taught us all a great deal about accepting others for what they were, not how they might look or behave because of physical problems. Her father had trouble accepting Linda's situation. He died when she was 12. Her mother had to work to earn a living for them. There were no programs in the local schools for Linda to attend. It was necessary for her mother to make some arrangement for Linda's care. Laura, her mother, made the courageous decision to commit Linda to state care. Laura and WD took Linda to the state facility in Lincoln, IL in December of 1960. It was a very difficult trip, especially the ride home. The state required that there could be no visits for six weeks after her commitment. As a result Linda couldn't be home for Christmas. That was very difficult for her mother and the rest of the immediate family. Laura was criticized by some relatives for "getting rid of Linda", but those who were close to the situation realized that Linda was far happier than she had been. She enjoyed the structured environment without unrealistic expectations of her. Before, she had been trying to cope in a world that required more knowledge and skills than she possessed or could ever achieve. The first assessments of Linda's abilities were misleading. Her mother had spent so much time with her developing her academic skills as much as possible that it seemed Linda would be able to master enough skills to work in the community and live in a sheltered home. However, after several different attempts at training it was decided she lacked the necessary ability to achieve that level of independence. Linda spent the last years of her life living with other people of similar abilities in an assisted living type home where she had assigned duties such as setting the tables for meals, cleaning up in the kitchen, taking care of her own room. She seemed very content. She was always anxious to come to her mother's home for a visit, or go on a trip with her mother, but she was always glad to get back to her home.

m1. Unknown Polhemius" m2. Catherine \Van Werven\

Historically the Polhemius family is from Rhineland and Westphalia.Johannes grahuated from Heidelburg University school of divinity. He was harrassed by religuous persecution, and twice left his homeland. He asked the West India Company in 1635 for a mission in Brazil. After the Portugese takeover in 1654, the Dutch were forced to leave or renounce their faith. He arrived in New Netherlands on the ship St. Charles without money or family. His family went to the Netherlands hoping to collect money owed him by the West India Company. They were unsuccessful. Eventually the family prospered, however. Johannes Theodorus Polhemius was the first pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York and Flatbush, New York.
