BIO: Jacob LEITER is thought to be one of the pioneers of the community of Leiters Ford in Fulton County, IN.  His name appears on land plat maps as early as 1860. About this same time, James GILCHRIST, compiler's great great grandfather, and his wife, Mary (ANDERSON), both natives of SCOTLAND, owned property in Richland Township, near the holdings of the LEITER family. The GILCHRISTs, in fact, purchased a small plot of land from Jacob LEITER about the same time as deeding the bulk of their own farm land to their three children. Jennet (GILCHRIST) CAMPBELL, wife of Christopher CAMPBELL, and daughter of the GILCHRISTs, died in 1865, leaving two sons, James T. and John.  The oldest of the two boys married Barbara A., a daughter of Jacob LEITER in 1884. Barbara died prior to the 1900 census, leaving James and six children.

BIO: It is likely that Lydia was a second wife to Jacob LEITER, since her age on the 1870 census was just 10 years older than the oldest of Jacob's daughters. Catherine Leiter was 22; Melissa Leiter was enumerated as 20 on this census. Ten-year-old Sidney and four younger children, including Barbara A. (5 years of age) were probably children born to Lydia.

BIO: Apparently Barbara LEITER died prior to the 1900 census enumeration, leaving her husband, James T. CAMPBELL, with six children.  On that census, James was enumerated as "widowed", in the household of Garrison and sara WALTERS.  His relationship to the head of the household was given as "Boarder."  The CAMPBELLs' children were found scattered among several households on that census. Barbara was enumerated as 5 years old in the household of Jacob and Lydia LEITER in 1870 in Fulton County.  Jacob was a neighbor of and thought to be a friend of James GILCHRIST, James T. CAMPBELL's maternal grandfather.  He was also the grantor in a property deed which named James GILCHRIST as grantee in the early 1860s. Compiler has been unable to locate the place of Barbara (LEITER) CAMPBELL'S burial, as of Nov. 1997.
