BIO: Peattie's "History of Fulton County, 1896..." contains the following information about Henry AULT, father of Joseph AULT. ...The father of our subject, Henry AULT, who for a number of years has been a resident of Rochester, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, in 1826, and learned the trades of carpenter and millwright. In 1854 he removed to Huntington County, Ind., and enlisted at Indianapolis, with the boys in blue of company H, Forty-seventh Indiana infantry, which regiment was attached to the army of the Potomac. After thirteen months of service he was discharged from field duty on account of disability, and transferred to the hospital service, acting as hospital steward at Camp Wyckliffe, Ky. Bu order of the division surgeon he was given charge of hospital No. 2, at Louisville, Ky. and later was placed in charge of the convalescent corps, returning home with some of "the boys". Henry Ault was married in 1849, to Susanna FRECK, a native of Fairfield County, Ohio, and a daughter of Joseph FRECK, a farmer of German descent.
Henry and Susanna AULT appear in household #72-76 on the 1880 Census for the Town of Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana. Per that enumeration, their two daughters, Eva and Mary H. had both married and left the home. Listed on this census in the home were Joseph F., age 22; Delila, age 17 (both listed as "teacher"; and Christena, age 76, born in PA. Christena would have been Henry's mother, wife of Frederick, who evidently died before 1880. The 1920 enumeration for Fulton County, IN shows a Henry AULT, 93, with wife Lucy C., 72. Both Henry and Lucy report they were born in OH; Henry's parents were born in PA. This seems likely to be Henry, son of Frederick AULT, with a second wife, but there has been no real evidence to support this idenification. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

BIO: Excerpts from a two-page article in the Fulton Co. History:
"JOSEPH AULT--The industrial interests of Rochester are well represented by this gentleman, a well-known architect and mechanic, who has been prominently connected with building in this city, evidences of his work being seen in many of the structures of this city. Mr. Ault is of Hoosier nativity, his birth havibg occurred in Huntington county, March 31, 1858. The Ault family had its origin in Saxony and the original ancestor probably landed at New York and settled near that city, for Philip Ault, the great grandfather of our subject, was born in Manhattan. Removing to Pennsylvania, he located at Valley Forge, where he was living during the memorable winter that the American army under George Washington suffered untold hardships there... ...After leaving the public schools of Rochester, Joseph attended the State Normal school at Terre Haute, after which he taught for a few years. He learned the business of woodworking with his father. For six months he was an employee in the shops of the Wabash Railroad Co. at Peru, Indiana. He has also erectedsome stations for the Standard Oil Co. and for years has been one of the leading contractors of Rochester, erecting buildings for, J.B. Fieser, O.P. Dillon, Cary Rapp, J.M. Kern and others. He is now doing shop work and architecture in his own planing mill. He is a broad-gauged, practical business man who has gained the confidence of all the public patronage. For two years, he served as town clerk and is now serving on the Rochester school board. During his incumbency, the board has erected a $20,000 school building, largely through his efforts. He is deeply interested in public education and all interests to advance the schools receive his support. Mr. Ault's interests center on his family. He was married March 25, 1884...Joanna M. Flora, and they now have four interesting children-- Fred H, a lad of ten years; Edith M. seven years; Joseph O., aged four; and an infant, Willie. The 1880 census for Rochester shows Joseph as the 22 year-old son of Henry and his occupation is given as "Teacher". Joseph and family may have moved from Rochester before his children were grown. The marriage index gives no listing for any of his children. Early in 1997, Wilma Foltz found and made a photocopy of the following obituary for Joseph F. AULT. She explained that a retired judge and his wife were compiling all of the old obituaries into book for, and that this was among the ones she copied from 1928-1931. The page had no date or year one it, and compiler did not have the page before and after this one to use as a guide. Other obituaries in close proximity were from 1930.
Joseph F. AULT, aged 72, former resident of Rochester, died at 5:00 o'clock Saturday evening at his home in Warroad, Minn., death being due to heart trouble. Early Saturday morning he suffered a heart attack and his condition gradually grew worse until the end. He had been in ill health for some time but his condition was not regarded as serious. Mr. AULT came to Rochester with his parents when only five years of age and continued to live here for many years. He was educated in the Rochester schools and became deeply interested in the educational work of the county. For three years he served on the school board. He followed the occupation of an architect and contractor and built a number of school houses in the county. Mr. AULT was a former member of the Rochester band and was the director of this organization for several years. Surviving are his wife and four children, Fred H. AULT and Edith Gerrie, of Warroad; William F. AULT, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Joseph AULT, of Rochester; 11 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. W.J. BAILEY and Mrs. G.F. BARCUS of Rochester. Burial will be made in Warroad. Joseph AULT of this city, has gone to Warroad to attend the services.

BIO: The article from "Belmont County History" does not say where or when Henry and Ann Maria WALTER were married, but their son, Philip, was born about 1775 in York County, PA. The same article states that some of the Aults who settled in Belmont County, OH came from Washington County, PA. The article from Peattie's book states that Philip AULT was born in Manhattan, NY and later lived at Valley Forge, PA where his son, Frederick, was thought to have been born. The article says that Philip moved to Belmont County, OH in 1812; the Belmont County History has no mention of Manhattan or Valley Forge and states that Philip moved from York County, PA to Belmont County in 1802. Henry, father of Philip, could have been born in NY or PA. Evidently, he did not move to OHIO with his son. Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

BIO: Per the Belmont County History, Philip AULT was the grandson of German immigrant, Valentine ALT, who came to America in 1738. Philip and Elizabeth LAU ALT's first three children were born in York County, PA. In 1802, they moved to Belmont County, OH where they remained until death. They had 15 children, including John F. AULT, the father of compiler's great uncle, John AULT, husband of Mary GILCHRIST. The family lived in Richland Township, section 2 in Belmont County. After Philip's death, his youngest son, Joseph, took over the farm and lived there until his death in 1891. The farm remained in the family until 1946. "Philip and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Old Dutch Cemetery on his farm. It is located < mile off County Road 5 about 1 mile southwest of the intersection with State Route 9". The article was submitted to th Belmont History by Dorothy H. WIG of North Canton, OH, a descendent of Philip AULT. ***********************************
The Peattie History reports that Philip AULT, the great grandfather of Joseph F. AULT, was born in Manhattan, NY. This source says that the AULT family originated in SAXONY.. "and the original American ancestor probably landed at New York....Removing to Pennsylvania, (Philip) located at Valley Forge...son, Frederick AULT, was born at Valley Forge in 1800, and in 1812 the family emigrated to Belmaont County, OH...". Considering the geography involved, compiler tends to consider the Belmont County History the most likely to be accurate. This account was written by a direct descendent of Philip which also adds to the consideration. ************************************* Mrs. Hatcher writes that she has located marriage records for Philip AULT and Elizabeth LAU in 1790. This was included among IGI records and further recorded Philip's birth in York County, PA as well as his death in Belmont County, OH in 1849. The "Family Tree Maker's Census Index" for 1830 shows a Philip AULT enumerated in Richland Township, Belmont County, OH. No other data appears in this index. (The article ends here)
Compiler's note: The obituary states that he was born June 15, 1920, but the cemetery shows the years of his life as "1929-1961." Calculation, using the age (31) and date of death (March 1961) would make the cemetery inscription the correct one. "Tiny" was the only known male child born to Herman and Rose Ault, so the missing part of the obit. was probably sisters: Erma Dean Hosimer, Pauline Russell, Olive McVey and Margaret Hittle. A fifth sister, Anna Mae Wilfert died in 1948. ********************* March, 1996: Compiler received obituaries for Christina L. AULT, a daughter of Tiny's son, John, from Wilma FOLTZ. One of these from The "Rochester Sentinel" names her paternal grandmother "Corriene MECHLING." Considering Tiny's age at the time he married Fay SLATER, compiler began to suspect there had ben an earlier marriage. From his obituary, the information that his children all resided in Plymouth at the time of his death made this more evident. Compiler has assumed that Tiny was first married to Corriene (maiden name unknown), and this couple had three children. Later, Tiny married Fay SLATER and Corriene married a Mr. MECHLING. BIO: Pages from Citizens Cemetery enumeration indicate that the family of John, Jr. and Sarah Ann (KEELY) AULT were thought to have moved to OK; however, marriages that seem appropriately timed were found for Joseph and his sister Mary E. in Fulton Co., IN. Compiler has made the assumption that both of these children married before leaving Fulton Co. Compiler found "Joseph E. AULT" and his wife Eliza in Rochester Township in Fulton County, IN on the 1920 census. Joseph's age was given as 53; Eliza's was 54. Joseph's place of birth was recorded as "INDIANA", but the place of birth of his father and his mother was unreadable. It may have been "U.S." but this is doubtful.

BIO: Doubt that Joseph A. AULT was the father of compiler's great uncle was eased by p. 135 of the Fulton County Cemetery Index, which enumerated the graves at Citizen's Cemetery in Rochester, IN. Notations on this page lend support that Joseph and his first wife, "Ellen" LUCAS were the parents of a son, John, b. Sept. 1869..." This record, along with the marriage index from Fulton County, indicate that Ellen probably died in Union Twp. between 1870-1875. Joseph married Martha E. CROMER in 1876; they were enumerated in Rochester in 1880. At that time, son John was 10. John and Mary Anderson GILCHRIST were married in Fulton County, where Mary lived with her parents, Thomas and Phoebe, on the James GILCHRIST family farm. Sometime after the birth of their sixth son, Clarence, the family moved to Culver, IN (Marshall County). The couple remained there until Mary's death. The following obituary was copied from the March 13, 1960 issue of the "Plymouth Pilot".
"AULT" "John Ault, 90, a former Culver resident, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Clarence, near Tippecanoe, with whom he had resided the past four years. He was born Sept. 8, 1869, in Fulton county and spent his entire life in Fulton and Marshall counties. His wife, Mary, preceded him in death on July 5. 1949. A son, Herman, preceded him in death on March 5, 1959. Surviving are five sons, Clarence of Tippecanoe, Howard of Rochester,, Ralph and Eldon, both of Plymouth, and Harry of Chicago; one brother, Clyde, of Rochester; 20 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren. He was a member of the Emmanuel EUB church, Culver, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the pastor, the Rev. Vernon L. Palmer. Interment will be in the Culver Masonic cemetery. Friends may call at the Easterday Funeral Home, Culver, until 1 p.m. Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the hour of the service."
Compiler remembers very little about "Uncle John Ault", except he was a rather small man with pointed nose and chin and grey hair. The last visit remembered was after his wife died and he was living alone in their small house in Culver, IN. Compiler was given permission to try out the antique pump organ that stood in the parlor. After playing several hymns, compiler was wishing she had a fine, old musical instrument like that organ; "Uncle John" made the promise that after he was "gone", compiler could have it. (of course the promise was forgotten in the years that followed) In an interview with John's nephew, Byron GILCHRIST, compiler recorded the following recollections: "Uncle John was kind of a "puny" and unusual man. He never did much but just make a living for his family. If he met you once, he ALWAYS knew you! He was an accomplished harmonica player."
Per the 1920 census, John AULT and family were residing in Fulton County at the time of the enumeration, 10 Jan. 1920. John's age was recorded as "50", his occupation as "General Labor". Five of his sons were enumerated in the family's home at that time. Howard, the oldest was 24 years old; Eldon, the youngest, was enumerated as "12". John's and his mother's place of birth was recorded as "Indiana", his father's as "Ohio." Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

BIO: Mary Anderson GILCHRIST was the only daughter of Thomas GILCHRIST known to have survived until adulthood. There are reports among county histories that the GILCHRISTs had at least one other daughter who died in infancy. The grave marker for that child stands near Thomas and Phoebe's graves at Leiter's Ford, IN, but the inscription does not give a surname. Historians have assumed this child as well as two other infants in the same area belonged to the GILCHRISTs. Family tradition has made no mention of these three children. Mary was obviously named for her paternal grandmother, who came from SCOTLAND to Jefferson County, IN as "Mary ANDERSON" about 1818. In 1826, Mary ANDERSON married James GILCHRIST, another immigrant from SCOTLAND. Mary A. GILCHRIST married John AULT when about 18 years of age; she had the first of her six sons within the first year of marriage. She lived her entire life in Fulton and Marshall Counties in IN; she died in Culver, IN at the age of 73. From pictures owned by compiler, Mary appears to have been quite short. In pictures taken in her youth, Mary's face looks round and soft-featured; her hair was dark, but was worn pulled back from her face probably with a braid or a twist at the back of her head. She was rather plump as a young lady, but not obese. In middle-aged pictures, Mary had become quite a bit heavier and her facial features had started to take on a more sharply defined appearance. In later years, Mary's nose and chin were rather prominent; she remained heavy-set until the last time compiler saw her, just a year or two before her death. The following obituary was supplied by Wilma MOW FOLTZ, from "The Plymouth Pilot", July 1949: "MRS. JOHN AULT" "Mrs. Mary Anderson Ault, age 73, wife of John Ault, died in her home in Culver, Tuesday afternoon after an illness of nine months. She was born in Fulton county, six miles northwest of Rochester September 13, 1875 and spent her entire life in Fulton and Marshall county. She was the daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Gilchrist. Surviving are her husband, John Ault, six sons, Herman and Howard of Argos, Clarence of Tippecanoe, Ralph and Eldon of Plymouth, Harry of Chicago, 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Mrs. Ault was a member of the Culver E.U.B. church where services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday. Rev. E.D. Mast of Urbana will be in charge and burial will be in the Culver cemetery. Friends may call at the residence in Culver."
Per the 1920 census for Fulton County, IN, John and Mary A. AULT were enumerated in Richland Township. Mary's age was recorded as "44"; five of the couple's six sons were enumerated in their household on 10 January. Two days later, however, Howard and Harry were enumerated a second time in the household of Arley JONES. On the later record, the two young men were classified as "Hired Hands". BIO: Around 1950, compiler, her parents and younger brother spent a week of school vacation visiting extended family in northern Indiana. This was one of the few times compiler's father took time off from his home and work responsibilities. As it turned out, the trip was marred only by a near tragedy of compiler's six year old brother falling out of the car which was traveling at highway speed; fortunately he was spared any lasting injury. One of the highlights of this trip was a brief visit with Howard and "Dollie" Ault. The Aults lived on a farm in Fulton County, IN. The house was an old two-story frame home, typical of farm homes in the early 1900's. A huge red barn. a milk house and several other buildings were also part of this traditional midwest farm. Howard, attired in "bibbed" overalls and faded blue work shirt, was a tall, rather stout man, who compiler remembers as looking very much like his mother--somewhat rounded face, sharply pointed nose, etc. Compiler no longer remembers "Dollie's" appearance, but the memory remains of all the "goodies" she had made for Christmas. There were several kinds of homemade cookies, cakes, puddings and candy. One particular candy stands out in compilers' mind--we had never heard of "potato candy" It was delicious!!!
A photocopy of Howard's obituary was provided by Wilma MOW FOLTZ "HOWARD AULT" "Final rites will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Whippoorwill Community Church for Howard Ault, R.R. 3, Rochester, who died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday in the Rochester nursing home. The Rev. Delbert Williams will officiate. Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Grossman funeral home in Argos from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 today until 11 a.m. Friday and at the church one hour prior to services. A retired farmer, Mr. Ault had resided all his life in the Culver and Rochester areas. He was born Feb, 26, 1895 in Fulton county to John and Mary Gilchrist Ault. His marriage was Dec. 30, 1925 at Culver to Verda Miller. She survives. He was a member of the Whippoorwill Community church and a veteran of World War I. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Dwight (Elizabeth) Kline, Monterey; one son Ray Ault, R.R. 3, Rochester; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four brothers, Ralph of Plymouth; Harry of Knox; Clarence of Tippecanoe; and Eldon of Plymouth. One daughter preceded in death."
The 1920 census for Fulton County shows Howard enumerated in his parents' household on 10 Jan. 1920; he is enumerated a second time (as is his brother, Harry) in Marshall County about 23/26 January. In the latter record, both Howard and Harry are listed as "Hired Man". Their occupations are listed as "Laborer". Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

Two of the children listed in this obituary and Ralph's wife's obituary are not found in any other family data. Calvin Ringle and Ethel Wrockladge are not children known to be born to Ralph and Ruth Wright Ault. It is not known what their relationship to Ralph Ault might be. A lso the obit. states eight surviving children but lists only seven. The U.S. Census record for 1920 shows Ralph A. as 19 years of age; his occupation at that time was listed as "General Labor." BIO: Clarence and Mary Ault visited compiler's family in Jeffersonville and the Gilchrists were welcomed into the Ault home a few times during compiler's childhood. The farm near Tippecanoe, IN where the Ault family lived, had been owned by Mary Swihart Ault's parents. Mary taught school for many years, as well as caring for a farm house and her family. After Clarence died in 1985, The Ault's son, Bob, continued to farm "the Swihart place" as it was called by the area natives. Wilma Foltz transcribed the obituary of Clarence and sent it to compiler. ******************************************* "C. Clarence Ault, 80, 5768 19th Road, Tippecanoe, died at 11 p.m. Sunday at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth, after a lengthy illness. A retired farmer, he also was a retired employee of the R.R. Donnelly Lakesid Press at Warsaw. Mr. Ault was born Jan. 22, 1905 in Fulton County to John and Mary Gilchrist Ault and was a lifetime area resident. He was married in December of 1936 to Mary M. Swihart who preceded him in death June 26 of this year. He was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethern. Surviving are two sons; Robert Ault, Tippecanoe, and Larry Ault, Mentone; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Walnut Church of the Brethern with Rev. Gary Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the Brethern Cemetery. Friends may call at Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, from 2 till 4 and 6 till 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to time of services Wednesday." *************************** Until fire destroyed their farm house, Byron and Emma Gilchrist owned a farm very close to the Swihart place. During summers before Byron's retirement from construction work, the family spent most of their weekends on the farm, where compiler visited during summer vacation. Larry and Bob Ault were frequently at the Gilchrist farm. After Byron retired, he and Emma sold their home in South Bend and made the farm their permanent residence until the fire forced them to move elsewhere. The two families maintained a close relationship until illness and advancing age limited their activities. Until the examination of the 1920 census for Fulton County, IN, the name of this second cousin of compiler's had been recorded only as "C. Clarence" AULT. That census record showed his name as "Charles C." Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

Survivors include his wife; brothers Harry of Knox and Clarence of Argos. Three brothers had preceded him in death."
Compiler's Note: Apparently, Mrs. FOLTZ has combined two obituaries into a single photocopy. There is no division between the two except for a slight deviation in the spacing between lines.
"Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday for Eldon L. Ault, 75, formerly of plymouth, who died Sunday morning at Punta Gorda, Fla. The Rev. Evidently, Eldon and Mildred had no children. The 1920 Census for Fulton County, IN, shows Eldon as the youngest of five sons enumerated in John and Mary AULT's household. Eldon was 12 years of age at that time. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

General Notes (Husband)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Included in the information re the Citizen Cemetery in Rochester was the following information on John AULT: "(Note: John AULT, native of Penns., was first m. to Susan ---, who probably died sometime between 1850 and 1860. Julianna "Julia A."____ was a native of Penn. and was m. to John AULT by 1860. All but the youngest child in this family were born in OH. See Census 1850 Roch. twp., Fulton Co., IN." Per the above source, John AULT's tombstone states that he died Dec. 26, 1883, "age 80yr-2mo-28da." Compiler questioned the timing of John AULT's marriage to Julia A./Julianna. If they did not marry until after 1850, it seems unusual that John's youngest child, the only one born in IN, would have been named "Julia A." Also, three of John's children named their daughters "Julia A." It seems likely that John's daughter Julia A., born about 1850 was the child of his second wife, Julia A./Julianna. *************************
Jan. 1996: Compiler's husband responded to a query for AULT information taken from the "Fulton County Folk Finder". The contact person, Peggy HATCHER, is a resident of Belmont County, OH and has been researching the AULT family there. She and her husband were in search of a "Hammond AULT", son of Frederick and grandson of Philip. 24 JAN 1996, Mrs. HATCHER sent a photocopy of "Belmont County History 1988" to us. That article supports compiler's theory that Julianna married John F. AULT before 1850 and was probably the mother of most of his children. In the "Philip Ault Family" article, the marriage of John F. (1803-1883) is reported to be to Julianna YOHE. Mrs. HATCHER then found a marriage recorded in Wayne Co., OH for a John F. AULT to "Julesha" YOHE in the IGI records. This wedding took place 27 AUG 1829. The History states this couple had 14 children and moved to Fulton County, IN. The Fulton Co., Cemetery Records accounts for only 10 children being born to John F., but there could have been more who did not move with the family to Fulton County. Unfortunately, the Belmont Co. History does not list the children by name. There is no mention in the Belmont History of "Susan" who was reported in the Fulton Cemetery index as being the first wife of John F. AULT. *****************
April 1996: The copy of the "Adam Ault' article, taken from the Fulton Co. Atlas, gives the exact birth date of John Ault as "September 28, 1803." This article also states that John was still living on his farm four and a half miles west of Rochester at the time of the article. Per the "Family Tree Maker's... " census index for 1830, there were two John AULTs enumerated in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH in 1830. This source gives only the name of the head of the household and the location of that person.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Information included in the pages re the Citizen Cemetery in Rochester, indicates that John AULT and Julianna/"Julia A." were not married until after the birth of John's youngest child about 1850. In fact, this article states that John's first wife, Susan, must have died between 1850-1860. Compiler suspects that Susan may have died in the 1840s, and that Julianna and John were married prior to the birth of the daughter, since she was named "Julia A." Data from Julianna AULT's tombstone states that she died Jan. 4, 1877,"age 66yr-6mo-6da." ******************** Correspondence with Peggy HATCHER, Bethesda, OH in Jan. 1966 has brought support to compiler's theory that Julianna married John F. AULT much earlier than reported by Fulton Co. sources. Per Mrs. HATCHER, IGI records show a marriage for John F. AULT to "Julesha" YOHE 27 AUG 1829 at St. Michael Evangelical Church, Baughman Twp., Wayne Co., OH. This is supported by information from "Belmont County History 1988". This history shows that John F. AULT (1803-1883) was the son of Philip AULT who migrated fom York Co., PA to Belmont Co., OH in 1802. Peattie's History shows this family moving to OH in 1812. The Belmont Histoy gives John's wife's name as Julianna YOHE, but has no family background for her. Per the history, the couple had 14 children, rather than the 10 reported by the Fulton Co. Cemetery index. Unfortunately, the names and dates of birth are not given. This would indicate that since Julianna died in Fulton Co. in 1877, that all of John's children were borne by Julianna and that John probably did not remarry after her death. The Belmont History also points out that several family members shared given names. At least 3 younger females were named "Julia Ann". ******************** APRIL 1996: Compiler received a letter from Wilma FOLTZ enclosing a photocopy of an article on Adam Ault, "the son of John and Julia A. AULT..." This article states that Adam was one of 14 children. Concerning Julia A. is written the following: "...His parents, with ten children, came to Indiana in 1849, and settled on a farm four and a half miles west of Rochester, where the father, aged about 80 years, still lives. His mother died in the year 1879, at the age of sixty-seven years..." The article also states that as of 1883 "...Adam has lost by death one sister and five brothers..." The reader should notice the differencies in the sources re this person's name, date of death, age at death, the length of time married to John F. Ault, and how many of the 14 children were hers. This article gives "Julia A.'s" date of death as 1879, age 67, at the beginning of the article; then the final sentence is: "Juliana Ault was born September 22, 1811 and deceased January 24, 1877."

BIO: Per the Belmont County History, Juliana YOHE was the mother of John AULT's children, rather than "Susan ____" as indicated by Ref. #1 from Fulton County Cemetery Indexes. In April, 1996, compiler received a photocopy of an article about Adam AULT taken from the 1883 County Atlas. The text follows:
ADAM AULT Adam, the son of John and Julia A. AULT, was born in Stark County, OH, January 21, 1842. He has the somewhat remarkable distinction of belonging to a family of fourteen children, nine sons and five daughters. Of these, he has lost by death one sister, the youngest of the family, and five brothers. His parents, with ten children, came to Indiana in 1849, and settled on a farm four and a half miles west of Rochester, where the father, aged about eighty years, still resides. His mother died in 1879, at the age of sixty-seven years. He remained at home, assisting his father in clearing the farm and tending the crops, until the date of his marriage, which occurred on the 2nd of October, 1862. His chosen companion was Mary J., the daughter of James and Mary KEELY, old citizens, residing at the time in the neighborhood of his father. His wife was born March 19, 1843. To these parents were born three children... Anetta, born July 23, 1863; Oliver S., born September 3, 1866; and Willis, who died in infancy April 4, 1871. The first two years of his married life were on a farm; the next three in Plymouth, Marshall County; from Plymouth he came back to Fulton County and farmed for two more years. About the 1st of March, 1871, he moved to Rochester, where he has ever since resided. Since 1871, he has been engaged in the manufacture and sale of "Ault's Proprietary Medicines", in which business he has been eminently successful. Though beginning on a very small capital, he has increased his business until his medicines are now in demand throughout Northern Indiana and parts of other States. John AULT was born September 28, 1803; came to Fulton County in 1849, where he still lives an old man. Juliana AULT was born September 22, 1811, and deceased January 24, 1877.
(Compiler's note) Disagreement exists on the death of Julia A./Juliana AULT between the beginning of the paragraph and the final sentence. The date of death given in the last sentence agrees with the data from "Cemetery Inscriptions". Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED

After considering data collected on other AULT families in the Rochester area during the mid 1800s, compiler found no other "Rebecca A. AULT." Therefore, the assumption has been made, until future evidence proves otherwise, that this is the Rebecca or Rebecca A. AULT named in the two marriage records. ******************* "Rochester Sentinel" 04 Jan 1862-11 Jan 1865

BIO: Information given on this son of John AULT, Sr. in the excerpts from p 135 of "Citizens Cemetery," removed doubts from compiler's mind as to this being the father of John AULT, husband of Mary A. GILCHRIST. Per the cemetery enumeration, Joseph A. was born in OHIO and was the son of Susan, John AULT's first wife. The "Citizens Cemetery" excerpt reads as follows: "(Note: Joseph AULT, son of John & Susan AULT of Rochester twp, m. (first) Nancy E. "Ellen" LUCAS , 28 May 1868 and resided in Union twp with a son, John, b. Sept. 1869 (Fulton Co., IN, M.R.; Census 1870). Joseph (A.) AULT m. next, 30 Apr. 1876, Martha E. Cromer, and they resided in Rochester city in 1880, with their son John (mentioned above), and worked in a livery stable. (Fulton Co., IN, M.R.; Census 1880.) The reference above makes no mention of Joseph AULT having another son; however, the obituary for his son John AULT states that John's "brother, Clyde AULT, survives."
Clyde was married in 1911, so he was probably the son of Joseph and his second wife, Martha (CROMER), and a half-brother to compiler's great uncle, John AULT. Joseph A. AULT, wife Martha and a son, John, were enumerated in the town of Rochester in 1880. Joseph was reported as 32 years old. He was born in OHIO and both his parents born in PA. Martha was 25, born in INDIANA; Martha's father was born in GERMANY, her mother in INDIANA. John was 10. Compiler found Joseph and Martha E. AULT on the 1920 census in Rochester Township, Fulton County. Joseph's age was given there as "71."
His place of birth was unreadable on the microfilm, but his parents' places of birth were both given as "PENNSYLVANIA."

Joseph's place of birth was recorded as "INDIANA", but the place of birth of his father and his mother was unreadable. It may have been "U.S." but this is doubtful.

His place of birth was unreadable on the microfilm, but his parents' places of birth were both given as "PENNSYLVANIA."
