BIO: Wilma FOLTZ transcribed a copy of the obituary for John Hittle and his wife, Margaret Eloise Ault. She added the date at the end.
"JOHN HENRY HITTLE--MARGARET AULT HITTLE" "Double funeral services for John Henry Hittle, 46, and his wife, Margaret Ault Hittle, 45, will be conducted at the Motley, Minnesota United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday. The bodies will be removed to the Grossman Funeral Home in Argos for graveside services in the Richland Center IOOF Cemetery AT 2 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Mrs. Edith Brunner will officiate. Mr. and Mrs. Hittle were shot to death at their farm home near Motley late Wednesday night. Mr. Hittle, who engaged in plumbing and light farming, was born near Argos March 28, 1927 to Ralph and Nellie Whittaker Hittle. A former resident of Leiter's Ford and Rochester, he moved with his wife to Motley three years ago. The couple was married Sept. 1, 1946 in the Richland Center Methodist Church. Surviving Mr. Hittle are four brothers: Wayne, Rochester; Gerald, of near Chicago; Raymond, Logansport; and James, Walkerton; and twin sisters, Mrs. Donald (Alta) Rock and Mrs. Albert (Alice) Schott, both of Rochester... ... BIO: This child was not mentioned in his parents obituary, but per the cemetery index, the grave next to his mother's is marked "Jackie, Son, 1949-1950." The obituary mentions that the Hittles lived in Marshall and Fulton Counties, IN until three years before they died. From this, compiler has assumed this child was born and died in Fulton County. BIO: Reference #1 , re Citizens Cemetery in Rochester, gives the children and grandchildren of John AULT, Sr. with some additional information taken from county histories, indexes, etc. Concerning the family of John, Jr. and Sarah Ann (KEELY) AULT, this source reports that the family is thought to have moved to OK; however, compiler found marriages in the Fulton Co. (The article ends here)
Compiler's note: The obituary states that he was born June 15, 1920, but the cemetery shows the years of his life as "1929-1961." Calculation, using the age (31) and date of death (March 1961) would make the cemetery inscription the correct one. "Tiny" was the only known male child born to Herman and Rose Ault, so the missing part of the obit. was probably sisters: Erma Dean Hosimer, Pauline Russell, Olive McVey and Margaret Hittle. A fifth sister, Anna Mae Wilfert died in 1948. ********************* March, 1996: Compiler received obituaries for Christina L. AULT, a daughter of Tiny's son, John, from Wilma FOLTZ. One of these from The "Rochester Sentinel" names her paternal grandmother "Corriene MECHLING." Considering Tiny's age at the time he married Fay SLATER, compiler began to suspect there had ben an earlier marriage. From his obituary, the information that his children all resided in Plymouth at the time of his death made this more evident. Compiler has assumed that Tiny was first married to Corriene (maiden name unknown), and this couple had three children. Later, Tiny married Fay SLATER and Corriene married a Mr. MECHLING. BIO: Per her father's obit., Roberta and her brothers, Danny and John, were living in Plymouth when "Tiny" died. There was no mention of her name being other than "AULT" so it is assumed that she had not married at that time. Her father and his wife, Lucille SLATER AULT were living in Argos. March, 1996: Compiler received obituaries for Christina AULT, the daughter of Roberta's brother, John. In these obits. her maternal grandmother was listed as Corriene MECHLING. The articles also stated that her grandfather, Norman "Tiny' AULT had preceded in death. It is apparent that Tiny was married previous to his marriage to Lucille SLATER AULT. It is likely that Roberta, Danny and John AULT were children of an earlier marriage to Corriene (maiden name unknown). Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED-11/8/1999

BIO: Per the Belmont County History, Philip AULT was the grandson of German immigrant, Valentine ALT, who came to America in 1738. Philip and Elizabeth LAU ALT's first three children were born in York County, PA. In 1802, they moved to Belmont County, OH where they remained until death. They had 15 children, including John F. AULT, the father of compiler's great uncle, John AULT, husband of Mary GILCHRIST. The family lived in Richland Township, section 2 in Belmont County. After Philip's death, his youngest son, Joseph, took over the farm and lived there until his death in 1891. The farm remained in the family until 1946. "Philip and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Old Dutch Cemetery on his farm. It is located < mile off County Road 5 about 1 mile southwest of the intersection with State Route 9". The article was submitted to th Belmont History by Dorothy H. WIG of North Canton, OH, a descendent of Philip AULT. ***********************************
The Peattie History reports that Philip AULT, the great grandfather of Joseph F. AULT, was born in Manhattan, NY. This source says that the AULT family originated in SAXONY.. "and the original American ancestor probably landed at New York....Removing to Pennsylvania, (Philip) located at Valley Forge...son, Frederick AULT, was born at Valley Forge in 1800, and in 1812 the family emigrated to Belmaont County, OH...". Considering the geography involved, compiler tends to consider the Belmont County History the most likely to be accurate. This account was written by a direct descendent of Philip which also adds to the consideration. ************************************* Mrs. Hatcher writes that she has located marriage records for Philip AULT and Elizabeth LAU in 1790. This was included among IGI records and further recorded Philip's birth in York County, PA as well as his death in Belmont County, OH in 1849. The "Family Tree Maker's Census Index" for 1830 shows a Philip AULT enumerated in Richland Township, Belmont County, OH. No other data appears in this index. BIO: Per the Belmont County History, Frederick AULT moved his family to Fulton County, IN. The history reports that he died in 1847, but does not specify the place of death. The article says that the first three of Philip's children were born in York Co., PA. Frederick would have been the second. Mrs. HATCHER writes in her Jan., 1996 letter that she believes Frederick is her direct ancestor. She says that Frederick had a son named Hammond, who was married in Belmont County, OH, but Hammond's place of death has not been found. Mrs. HATCHER also says that Frederick and Christina died in Fulton Co., IN. The Peattie History mentions a son, Frederick, who was born to Philip AULT at Valley Forge, PA in 1800. Philip and family, according to Peattie, migrated to Belmont County, OH in 1812 (10 years later than the Belmont County History reports). Frederick's son, Henry, was born in Belmont County in 1826. In 1854, Henry supposedly moved from Belmont County to Huntington County, IN with his wife, Susanna Freck, where their son Joseph F. was born in 1858. Peattie reports that Henry lived in Fulton County for a number of years prior to 1896 when his History was published, but he does not indicate that Frederick AULT was ever a resident of INDIANA. Per the "FAMILY TREE MAKER'S ..." census index for 1830, there was a Frederick AULT in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH in 1830. Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Ault.GED Per the Belmont County history, Christina was a second cousin to Frederick.

BIO: The Belmont County History states that Henry married first to Catherine AULT, his second cousin. He then married Salome Buckingham. General Notes for Child John F. Ault
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Included in the information re the Citizen Cemetery in Rochester was the following information on John AULT: "(Note: John AULT, native of Penns., was first m. to Susan ---, who probably died sometime between 1850 and 1860. Julianna "Julia A."____ was a native of Penn. and was m. to John AULT by 1860. All but the youngest child in this family were born in OH. See Census 1850 Roch. twp., Fulton Co., IN." Per the above source, John AULT's tombstone states that he died Dec. 26, 1883, "age 80yr-2mo-28da." Compiler questioned the timing of John AULT's marriage to Julia A./Julianna. If they did not marry until after 1850, it seems unusual that John's youngest child, the only one born in IN, would have been named "Julia A." Also, three of John's children named their daughters "Julia A." It seems likely that John's daughter Julia A., born about 1850 was the child of his second wife, Julia A./Julianna. *************************
Jan. 1996: Compiler's husband responded to a query for AULT information taken from the "Fulton County Folk Finder". The contact person, Peggy HATCHER, is a resident of Belmont County, OH and has been researching the AULT family there. She and her husband were in search of a "Hammond AULT", son of Frederick and grandson of Philip. 24 JAN 1996, Mrs. HATCHER sent a photocopy of "Belmont County History 1988" to us. That article supports compiler's theory that Julianna married John F. AULT before 1850 and was probably the mother of most of his children. In the "Philip Ault Family" article, the marriage of John F. (1803-1883) is reported to be to Julianna YOHE. Mrs. HATCHER then found a marriage recorded in Wayne Co., OH for a John F. AULT to "Julesha" YOHE in the IGI records. This wedding took place 27 AUG 1829. The History states this couple had 14 children and moved to Fulton County, IN. The Fulton Co., Cemetery Records accounts for only 10 children being born to John F., but there could have been more who did not move with the family to Fulton County. Unfortunately, the Belmont Co. History does not list the children by name. There is no mention in the Belmont History of "Susan" who was reported in the Fulton Cemetery index as being the first wife of John F. AULT. *****************
April 1996: The copy of the "Adam Ault' article, taken from the Fulton Co. Atlas, gives the exact birth date of John Ault as "September 28, 1803." This article also states that John was still living on his farm four and a half miles west of Rochester at the time of the article. Per the "Family Tree Maker's... " census index for 1830, there were two John AULTs enumerated in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH in 1830. This source gives only the name of the head of the household and the location of that person.

RALPH AULT "Ralph A. Ault, 80, formerly of Rt.7, Plymouth, died at 8:15 a.m., Monday at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth, after being there four years. He was a retired farmer. He was born May 26, 1900 in Fulton County to John and Mary Gilchrist Ault and lived most of his life in the Culver area. He moved to Plymouth in 1964. Mr. Ault was married March 23, 1925 at Warsaw to Ruth Wright, who preceded him in death. Surviving are eight children: Mrs. Ethel Wrockladge, Delphi, OH; Mrs. Jean Zartman, Fort Wayne; Mrs. Edna Brofford, Akron; Mrs. Nancy Stiles, Argos; Mrs. Virginia Eads, Mentone; Arlon Ault, Tippecanoe; and Calvin Ringle, Akron; 26 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and three brothers, Clarence Ault, Tippecanoe; Eldon Ault, Plymouth; and Harry Ault, Knox. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred and two brothers. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. with Rev. Cleda Fahlgren, pastor of Our Church of Lord Jesus Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Culver Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 till 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday until the time of services."
Two of the children listed in this obituary and Ralph's wife's obituary are not found in any other family data. Calvin Ringle and Ethel Wrockladge are not children known to be born to Ralph and Ruth Wright Ault. It is not known what their relationship to Ralph Ault might be. A lso the obit. states eight surviving children but lists only seven. The U.S. Census record for 1920 shows Ralph A. as 19 years of age; his occupation at that time was listed as "General Labor." NOTE: Bonine Funeral Home, Culver, IN wrote date of Ruth (WRIGHT) AULT's death as "10/27/64", in answer to an inquiry from Wilma FOLTZ. Her obit. and her son Arlon AULT both record date of her death as "Sep. 21, 1964." Obit. also gives additional surviving children: "Mrs. Ethel WROCKLADGE, Delphi, OH. (dau.) and another son, "Calvin RINGLE, Akron." Both are also listed as surviving children of Ruth's husband Ralph AULT at the time of his death, April, 1981. In researching this family for compiler, Wilma FOLTZ evidently wrote to Arlon AULT for innformation. He responded with a list of his siblings, their spouses and vital dates. He did not mention any of three who appear in one or more of the obits. (Ethel, Alice or Calvin).

BIO: Reference #1, "Citizens Cemetery," gives only the name and approximate birth year of this daughter of John F. and Susan AULT. After considering data collected on other AULT families in the Rochester area during the mid 1800s, compiler found no other "Rebecca A. AULT." Therefore, the assumption has been made, until future evidence proves otherwise, that this is the Rebecca or Rebecca A. AULT named in the two marriage records. ******************* "Rochester Sentinel" 04 Jan 1862-11 Jan 1865
"MARRIED: On Thursday December 18th, 1862, by the Rev. N.L. Lord at the residence of the brides father, Mr. Joseph Ault and Miss Rebecca Ault, all of Fulton County. We extend to the happy pair our congratulations. May their days be many and their troubles few. " Joseph may have been a descendent of Frederick AULT, another son of Philip AULT and a brother to Rebecca's father, John F. AULT. The Belmont History states that Frederick migrated to Fulton Co. also. N.L.Lord is the minister who performed the marriages of Thomas and Phoebe GILCHRIST and Jennet and Christopher CAMPBELL.
