BIO: The WILSON reference listed below is headed with the following message: "Ref. W. Marshall ELLISON, La Follette, Tennessee, March 22, 1935 The Ellison family was among the first settlers along the Powell River in Tennessee" At the bottom of the same page is a notation which reads, "(G.W. Ellison was Trustee of Campbell Co. 1902-1910)." Compiler could find no reference to the identity of "G.W. ELLISON"; it is assumed he was a descendent of Henry or one of his siblings. Compiler found the graves of William Marshall and Catherine (AUSMUS) ELLISON in the Ellison Cemetery just east of the Campbell County line, at the end of Ellison Lane, North side of Hwy. 63 near Speedwell, TN. Wm.'s tombstone gives both his date of birth and his date of death as recorded on the data sheet above, however, the one-page ELLISON family tree gives "b. 1855; d. Aug. 21, 1935." The census enumeration for 1870 in Union Co. lists his age as "14," which would calculate to a year of birth as "1856." The 1880 census for Union County, TN shows "William M." still living in his father's home at 25 years of age. His occupation was given as "Farmer."

BIO: There are two Ellison Cemeteries in Claiborne County. "Marsh" and "Katie" (AUSMUS) ELLISON are buried in Ellison #1, just east of the Campbell Co. line, at the end of Ellison Lane on the north side of Hwy.63. Compiler found Catharine AUSMUS, age 7, enumerated in the household of Benjamin and Elizabeth AUSMUS, in Claiborne Co., TN, 05 August 1870. The assumption has been made that this is "Katie", wife of "Marsh" ELLISON.

BIO: The two main sources of information on the "Marsh" ELLISON family give conflicting data concerning Myrtle V. ELLISON. Lawrence and Joy EDWARDS report Myrtle as marrying only once, and that to "Earl Hobson SMITH." WILSON, who gives credit for his data to W. Marshall ELLISON ("Marsh"), states that "Myrtle Viola" married 1st to ____SHOUN, then a second marriage was to "P. Hop SMITH." These same two sources differ on such things as "Marsh" ELLISON's date of birth -- EDWARDS, very specifically reports that Marsh was born 23 Dec. 1854; WILSON gives only "1855" as the birth date.

BIO: The WILSON reference cited below states that James ELLISON and two brothers, Berry and Robert, came to the Powell River area in Claiborne Co., TN from NORTH CAROLINA. The 1850 census enumeration gives the birthplace of James ELLISON as "South Carolina." T he 1850 census shows James as 41 years of age and a farmer. Though the parents of James ELLISON are not named in any of the references found, there is a 67 year-old female (also born in SC) whose name is recorded as Elizabeth ELLISON enumerated in James ELLISON's household. Compiler strongly suspects that this is the mother of James, Robert and Berry ELLISON, the three brothers who first settled on the Powell River in TN. Compiler found a "James ELLISON, Jr." on the Claiborne Co., TN census in 1830. His age was in the "20-30" range; an adult female in the "15-20" range was enumerated in this household, as was a female under the age of 5. Since James ELLISON's oldest daughter was born about 1829, this well could be the correct enumeration for this family.

BIO: The "Old Speedwell Families" books by L. EDWARDS, give the name of the wife of James ELLISON as "Elizabeth___", maiden name unknown. The WILSON reference below gives the wife of James ELLISON as "____AUSMUS." The 1850 census for Claiborne County, TN shows the wife of James ELLISON as "Eliza ELLISON." There is also a 67 year-old "Elizabeth ELLISON" enumerated in the household who is probably the mother of James. From the data taken from all sources, compiler has made an "educated guess" that the wife of James ELLISON was Eliza (or possibly Elizabeth) AUSMUS. November, 1996, Eva McCARTY, another descendent of Bartlett O'DELL, sent compiler a summary of census records including the ELLISON families. Mrs. McCARTY found the following:
1850: ELLISON, James (38), Elizabeth (38), Nancy (21), Henry (19), Berry (14), William (12), Benjamon (9), James (7), Elizabeth (67) SC [CL-1327-671] Union County, TN, District 12 Lost Creek, Aug. 9, 1870: 14-14 ELLISON, Henry, et al (the son of James ELLISON) 15-15 ELLISON, Eliza (60), CLEMANS, Nancy (40, Martha (16), Mary (16), Elizabeth (13), Nancy (28), ODLE, Elizabeth (70) James ELLISON died in 1851, and Eliza was listed as head of their household in 1870. Per Eva McCARTY, Eliza, 68 years old, "Mother Widow" was enumerated in the household of Nancy CLEMENS in Union County, TN in 1880.

BIO: In June, 1996, compiler received a packet of data on various members of the Barlett H. O'DELL family, including the one-page genealogy of the James ELLISON family and a continuing genealogy of his son Henry. Per this genealogy, James and two brothers migrated from NORTH CAROLINA to the Powell River area which lies in both Claiborne and Campbell Counties of TN. James and his wife, Elizabeth or Eliza AUSMUS, were the parents of at least six children; although this one-page genealogy shows only four, the last of whom was Henry ELLISON. Henry's son, W. Marshall "Marsh" ELLISON was apparently the source of most of the data on the page, but the actual compiler is not cited. Another photocopy in the packet of data on the ELLISON family was what appears to be a synopsis of the Civil War Pension File/Widow's Pension File of Henry ELLISON. This page contains two sections, the first of which reads as follows: ELIZABETH M. ELLISON...Widow of Henry ELLISON, a Private in Co. C. Regiment 1 - Tenn. Cal., Infantry...Affidavit made by soldier Henry ELLISON 1877 that he was wounded accidentally in the service by a fellow soldier while in line of his duty 1865, Dec. 17, near Morristown, Tenn.; that 'I was on detail duty.'
The second section on the page seems to be someone's summary of reports on Henry's C.W. duty and his injury... Under command of Colonel Palmer of the 15th Pennsylvania Regiment order from General Burnside -- Affidavit made in Union Co. Tenn. 1876 by 2nd Lieutenant Caide M. Rogers who states he was detailed on duty by Gen Burnside and etc., same place as above. Also affidavit made in Union County, Tenn. by Berry Ellison, Wm. W. Braden, Privates in Co. C, Tenn. Inf., Vol. were attached to the fifteenth Penna. Calv. and while in Morristown, Dec. 1873, (This date must be an error) while on march and in line of duty while soldiers were through fence, said soldier was dismounted and another soldier's horse ran against the said Henry Ellison's horse and the soldier's gun fired and shot said soldier through the left leg and etc. The soldier died 4-17-1895 shown by affidavit of Marion W. ELLISON and Andrew C. BRADEN, Union Co., Tenn. Affidavit of widow for pension in Union County, Tenn., 1895, states her maiden name was Elizabeth M. Odle, and married Henry Ellison 12-23-1852, by Wm. Williams, Reverend, Claiborne County, Tenn., that her husband enlisted in Barboursville, Kentucky. Affidavit of Elisa Nelson in Campbell County, Tenn., age 71, as she was at their wedding about 12-1851 or 1852...
The latter document states that Elizabeth "was buried at Broden Grave Yard, 13th Dis., said county..." (It is uncertain if "said county" refers to Union or Campbell Co., TN) The single-page ELLISON family genealogy states that the three brothers, Berry, Ben and Henry ELLISON "are probably buried in the National Cemetery in Knoxville." In a letter to compiler in Nov. 1996, Eva McCARTY included a photocopy from a cemetery index which is headed "Braden Cemetery (Continued)...(page) 35."
That page has an alphabetical list of graves found in Braden Cemetery which includes several EDWARDS and ELLISON names. There is evidently a military marker there for "ELLISON, Henry Co. C 1st TN Inf," but no dates are given. The next grave listed is for "ELLISON, Iliza M. Apr. 26, 1899 - Oct. 2, 1899." Elizabeth Mahala's name is not on this page. Mrs. McCARTY also points out that this Cemetery is located at "Blue Springs Hollow" in Speedwell (Claiborne Co.) TN. Earlier data provided to compiler by Wm. HEINLE, another O'DELL descendent, gave the marriage data for Henry and Elizabeth (O'DELL) ELLISON. The 1850 census enumeration for the household of James ELLISON shows Henry as 19 years of age. He is listed as the second oldest child in the ELLISON home. A transcription from the 1870 census of Union County, TN shows Henry and "Mahaley" both as 38 years of age. The 1880 census for Union County, p 23, shows Henry, 49, "crippled", occupation "farmer." "Elizabeth M., 49, wife, keeping house," etc. Henry's mother, "Eliza ELISON" was enumerated one household before Henry's, and the household just before Eliza's is that of "Nancy CLEMENS", her daughter Mary EDWARDS, James M., 5, and John, 3.

The index to Claiborne County Probate Records does not list a son by this name, but does refer to a daughter as "Martha m. __?__McKindry" "Old Speedwell Families" lists McKendry as the first child born to Spencer and Artemicia O'DELL EDWARDS. Per this reference McKendry married twice.. first to Hester AUSMUS and next to Katherine SIMMONS. Compiler has found neither marriage record as of AUG 1996. "McKindry EDWARDS" is enumerated in his mother's household as "13" years of age in 1860. On the 1870 census, "McKenzie" EDWARDS, 22, is head of the household next door to his brother, Jeptha, and two doors from his mother. "McKenzie" is listed as a farmer, born in TN; Hester A., his wife, is 21. The couple has 3 children, all under the age of 4. Lawrence EDWARDS records five children for "McKendry": Frank md Cornelia SHELBY Spencer md#1: Martha O'DELL md#2: Rosie SIMMONS Calloway (b. BIO: Dec. 1996: Compiler found the household of John C. AUSMUS on the 1860 census for Claiborne County. One of the children enumerated in this house- hold is "Hester A., 12, F, b. TN." Since Hester was within one year of the age of McKindry EDWARDS on the same census, compiler has assumed this to be the family of Hester, McKindry's wife. Hester Ann was 32 years old at the time of the enumeration of the 1880 census for Claiborne Co.; she and McKindry reported seven children between the ages of 14 and 3 plus McKindry's 64-year-old mother, "Artiemacey" (O'DELL) EDWARDS in their household.

John appears as 14 years of age on the 1880 census in McKindry's household.

BIO: This child of McKendry and Hester (AUSMUS) EDWARDS is enumerated as "William F." on the 1870 census; his age is given as 2 years. Lawrence EDWARDS, in his first book about the old Speedwell families, lists "Frank" as the first child of this couple. He also gives Frank's wife as Cornelia SHELBY. Compiler suspects "Frank" and "William F." are one in the same, but further research is needed to make this conclusion. William F. appears as a 12-year-old on the 1880 census, working on his father's farm.

BIO: Spencer is the second child listed in Lawrence EDWARDS' book in the family of McKendry EDWARDS. There are no dates of birth, death or marriage listed for Spencer, but it is reported that he was married first to Martha O'DELL and second to Rosie SIMMONS. Per the 1880 census, Spencer is the youngest of McKindry and Hester Ann's children; he is 3 years of age on enumeration day, June 15, 1880. 20 APR 1997: Compiler received a message from Denny and Marla BRUBAKER of San Antonio, TX containing data on Spencer, the son of McKendry EDWARDS, and Spencer's second wife, "Rosa SIMMONS." Data included was birth and death dates for both Spencer and Rosa, as well as their place of burial.
