He moved from Hanover County to Albemarle, and was the third settler in that County. That county had been formed from Goochland in 1744, which in turn had been carved from Henrico in 1728. He was among the first men who volunteered their service in Albemarle County to resist the "high-handed measures" of Lord Dunmore's "wicked administration". Before the war, he moved with his family to Surry County, NC in view of the celebrated "Pilot Mountain". When the war began, he applied to Governor Caswell for commissions for all of his sons old enough to bear arms. A Company was organized in April 1775, and his sons served at the Battle of King's Mountain". In 1793 he migrated to Nashville where he died in about 1802.

"Was born in Virginia in 1755, moved to Surry County, North Caro.,lina, was in the battle of Stono, and as one of Cleveland's men was wounded at King's Mountain. At Pyle's defeat in 1781, he waws so badly wounded that he died the next day."

General Notes for Child Joel Lewis
Captain Joel was born in Albemarle County Virginia in 1760, and went with his father, William Terrell Lewis Sr. and his brothers, William Terrell Lewis Jr., Micajah Green Lewis, and James Martin Lewis to Surry County, NC, where they enlisted in the army about the time of the American Revolutionary War. He led a company at King's Mountain in the American Revolution. In this troup were twenty-two of his family connection. In 1784 he was chosen to represent Surry County, North Carolina in the House of Commons. He married Miriam Eastham in March 1786. They had eighteen children. In 1789 they moved to Nashville TN where he owned and operated a tavern. In 1796 he was a member of the convention that formed the first constitution of the State of Tennessee, and he was elected State Senator. He died in Nashville, Davidson County Tennessee 1816.

General Notes for Child James Martin Lewis
Jame Martin Lewis was the second son of the Lewises to bear this name. He was born in 1762, and died in Columbia, TN in 1830. He was a lieutenant under Micajah. His wife was a daughter to Colonel Benjamin Hardin. He is burued in Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville TN.
