BIO: Nathaniel was enumerated as one year of age on the 1850 census for Claiborne County, TN. By July, 1860, his family was residing in Laurel County, KY, where Nathaniel married his first wife, Hannah "GUTHREY" in 1868. Marriage records state that Nathaniel was 19 at the time of his marriage. He was a farmer; a resident of Laurel Co. Both of his parents were born in Tennessee. The couple was married at William Lickliter's. There was a note stuck between the pages of the record book in the handwriting of E.J. O'DELL authorizing his son's marriage to Hannah Marinda GUTHREY. (The bride was 31 years of age; this was her second marriage.) Discovery that Nathaniel's father and mother were in Mercer County, IL in the early 1900s led compiler to examine the census records for that county in 1900 and 1910. Apparently Nathaniel married a second time, about the time of the 1900 census enumeration, since the response to "No. of years married?" was "0" for both Nathaniel and his wife, Eliza. (She is listed as "Wife" on that census.) No data has been found concerning this marriage, but per the census enumeration (23 June 1900), Eliza was 68 years of age; Nathaniel was 51. Nathaniel's occupation was listed as "Day Laborer." Ownership of the home is recorded "O-F" ("owned"-"free"), indicating that either Nathaniel or Eliza had lived in the residence for a substantial period of time. Although there has been no documentation found to support it, compiler believes that she has found at least one son of Nathaniel O'DELL's living near his grandfather, Elisha Jordan O'DELL in Millersburg Township in 1900. Based on his year and place of birth as given on census, compiler has made the assumption that William H. O'DELL, who was enumerated as head of his own household in Mercer County, IL in 1900 and 1910, is the son of Nathaniel and his first wife, Hannah LICKLITER GUTHREY. It is possible that this William was the son of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, but "Eliza O'DELL, 81, widowed, born in SC" is enumerated in William's household in 1910. Her relationship to the head of the household is specified as "Mother." (She would actually have been William's stepmother, however, since she and Nathaniel were probably not married until about 1900.) Compiler was unable to find Nathaniel on the 1910 census, nor was his wife, Eliza, enumerated as head of a household. This is substantial evidence that the "Eliza, ...Mother..." in William's home was Nathaniel's widow. It is also strong evidence that Nathaniel died sometime between 1900 and 1910, probably in Mercer County.

BIO: Per the marriage record, this was Hannah "GUTHERIE's" 2nd marriage. She was 31 years old at the time she married N.C. O'DELL, who was 19. The record also states that both her parents were born in TN. The couple was married at Wm. LICKLITER's. A note written by E.J. O'DELL, father of the groom, gave his permission for Nathaniel to marry Hannah "GUTHREY". On the 1860 census, Hannah M. and "H.O." or "Thos." "GUNTHA" are enumerated in the home of William and Rebecca LICKLITER. Mr."GUNTHA's" occupation is "farm laborer". The LICKLITERs and all their children except a 15-year-old girl were born in TN, as were Hannah and Mr. "GUNTHA" Per the 1850 census, Hannah M. was a daughter of the LICKLITER's. Her husband, "Mr. GUNTHA", was 24 years old in 1860. (Could have been a C.W. casualty???) Hannah's age is given as 24; among the seven other children in the home are 25-year-old Esther M. and 21-year-old Martha Jane....Hannah's older and younger sisters, per the census.

BIO: Compiler has again assumed a relationship for William H. O'DELL as son of Nathaniel O'DELL and Hannah (LICKLITER) GUTHERIE. Again, there is no documentation to prove this as of 22 April 1997. And, again, William H. O'DELL could have been the son of either Nathaniel or of Nathaniel's parents, Elisha Jordan and Hannah (WILLIAMS) O'DELL. Since Hannah had reported in 1900 that she had given birth to 11 children, William H. may have been one of them. William H. reported in 1910 that his mother was born in KY; in 1900, however, both of his parents were reported to have been born in TN. Hannah (WILLIAMS), wife of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, and Hannah (LICKLITER) O'DELL, wife of Nathaniel, were both reported to have been born in TENNESSEE. William H. O'DELL was enumerated as head of the household immediately after that of Elisha Jordan O'DELL, thought to be his paternal grandfather, in Mercer Co., IL in 1900. Nathaniel was also residing in Mercer County at that time, but he was enumerated in his own household with wife, Eliza, who reported that the couple was married but the "number of years married" was recorded as "0". Evidently Hannah (LICKLITER GUTHREY), died before 1900 or the couple had divorced, and Nathaniel had remarried. To add some support to compiler's theory, the 1910 Mercer County census shows Eliza O'DELL widowed and enumerated in the household of William H. and Nancy J. O'DELL. Her "relationship to the head of the household" is given as "Mother." It is strongly suspected that Nathaniel died between 1900 and 1910, and that William took his stepmother into his home. From information appearing on the census record concerning William's wife and children, it would seem that he had spent some time in IOWA prior to his residence in IL. William's wife, Nancy J., gives IOWA as her own birthplace, and two of the children appearing on the 1900 census were born in IOWA. In 1910, Beatrice, a daughter enumerated in the household in 1900, is not listed, but Alvin, the son, was also born in IOWA. In 1910, there is another daugher, Eva U., nine years of age, whose place of birth is "Illinois." From this data, it is likely that William and Nancy were married in IOWA, and moved to IL between July, 1893 (when Alvin was born) and June, 1900.

BIO: In tracing the identity of the wife of Nathaniel O'DELL, son of E. Jordan O'DELL, compiler noticed the connection of Hannah M. Guthrey to William and Rebecca LICKLITER on the 1860 census for Laurel Co. Hannah M. and "H.O." or "Thos" GUNTHA were the last two people listed in the LICKLITER home. Family tradition has long connected the LICKLITER and O'DELL names in Laurel Co., but compiler assumed that they were merely neighbors and friends. Further research of the 1850 census showed 13 year old "Marinda" as a daughter of the LICKLITER's. Later compiler remembered seeing William LICKLITER's signature as a witness in the Lacey O'DELL Pension File. Then it was possible to link Hannah "Marinda" via Jordan O'DELL's son and the LICKLITER family. BIO: The 1850 census gives Rebecca LICKLITER's maiden name as MAYS; however, there is a notation added--one source gives GURTHA as a maiden name. (compiler suspects the confusion is with the name of her first marriage. On the 1860 census, in the LICKLITER home are listed a "H.O." or "Thos" and Hannah M. GUNTHA. Marriage records for Hannah's marriage to Nathaniel O'DELL show Nathaniel's fether's written permission for his son to marry Hannah M. GUTHREY. Birth dates have been calculated from the ages on the 1850 and 1860 census. The marriage date has been calculated from the date of their oldest child on the 1850 census. BIO: Per the marriage record, this was Hannah "GUTHERIE's" 2nd marriage. She was 31 years old at the time she married N.C. O'DELL, who was 19. The record also states that both her parents were born in TN. The couple was married at Wm. LICKLITER's. A note written by E.J. O'DELL, father of the groom, gave his permission for Nathaniel to marry Hannah "GUTHREY". On the 1860 census, Hannah M. and "H.O." or "Thos." "GUNTHA" are enumerated in the home of William and Rebecca LICKLITER. Mr."GUNTHA's" occupation is "farm laborer". The LICKLITERs and all their children except a 15-year-old girl were born in TN, as were Hannah and Mr. "GUNTHA" Per the 1850 census, Hannah M. was a daughter of the LICKLITER's. Her husband, "Mr. GUNTHA", was 24 years old in 1860. (Could have been a C.W. casualty???) Hannah's age is given as 24; among the seven other children in the home are 25-year-old Esther M. and 21-year-old Martha Jane....Hannah's older and younger sisters, per the census.
