James Garrison Jr was the second son of James & HesterAnn(Roberts)Garrison. His father was a Revolutionary War Soldier fromNorthCarolina who, according to his pension application, was borninFrederick Town, Pennsylvania, in 1747 and who died in Greene County,Illinois, in 1841/2. His mother was the daughter of William &RosannahRoberts of Surrey County, North Carolina. James Jr was bornabout 1776in Wilkes County, North Carolina. His father first appearsin the areain the 1774 Surry County tax lists. Wilkes County wasformed fromSurry in 1777|. In 1778, James Garrison Sr entered 150acres of landon Pipe Camp Creek on the waters of Hunting Creek. Thisarea, south ofpresent Wilkesboro, is even today wild and primitivemountains withaccess through the Yadkin River Valley. The familyremained there untilabout 1792 when they moved to the Pendletondistrict of South Carolina,settling along the Brushy Creek of theSaluda River's west bank.Sometime after their arrival and before1800, James Jr married RachelLooper and they are in the 1800 censusof Pendleton District near hisfather.
James Sr moved with his family to Barren Co, KY, sometime before1806and James Jr seems to have followed as his daughter Rachel wasborn inMarch 1806 in South Carolina and his next child, SolomonLooperGarrison, was born in Barren Co in June 1808. Garrison landholdingswere on the Green River near Mammoth Cave in what is nowEdmonsonCounty but was then part of Barren County James Jr's stay inKentuckywas short lived. Illinois Territory was formed in 1809 out oftheIndiana Territory and settlers were invited. James Jr was amongthefirst to accept the invitation. He settled within the presentlimitsof the town in Carmi in October 1809 on the west bank of theLittleWabash opposite the site of David Burrell's Mill. Carmihistorianscredit this as the first such settlement in present Carmi.His sonslater stated that James often boasted that when he arrivedthere wereonly two other white families between Vincennes andJonestown. Whenthe War of 1812 broke out, the local Indians becamehostile and JamesJr fled with his family across the Little Wabash tothe Old Carmi Fortand it was there that his son, Samuel, was born inDecember 1811.After the war, James Jr moved down into the forks of theWabash andpurchased John Bradbury's improvement known as "Elam".James' firstCarmi land was not registered as the new IllinoisTerritory wasdetermined not to make the same mistake regarding Indianclaims thathad previously been made in other states. No Illinois landholdingswere registered until all Indian claims had been settled andthe areahad been surveyed under the new federal township surveysystem. It isalso for the same reason that he purchased Bradbury's"improvement"rather than his land when he moved to Emma Township.After completionof the federal survey, James formally purchased thisland from theShawneetown Land Office with his first payment recordedon 10September 1816. James continued to purchase land in EmmaTownshipadjoining or near his initial acreage and at the time of hisdeath in1845 had increased his holdings from the original 80 acres toa totalof 800 acres. After his death this acreage was transferred tohischildren and most of it fell shortly thereafter into the handsofothers. His grandson, Alexander Logan Garrison, was born ontheoriginal homestead and during his lifetime steadily accumulated allofhis grandfather's 800 acres. Alexander replaced James' originallogstructure with a large white frame house which was an EmmaTownshiplandmark still known as the Old Garrison Place until it wasfinallydemolished in the early 1970's. Rachel(Looper) Garrison diedinJanuary 1820 from complications from the birth of their last child,Joseph, some 10 months before. James remarried Selah(Celia) PearceonJuly 24, 1827.
