Neal was a tail gunner in WW II. He was shot down twice, landing in Allied territory. He was a member of the 100th Bomb Squadron in WW II. He had a motorcycle accident which caused permanent mental impairment in 1951, at which time his parents undertook his care in South Haven, KS. At the time of his discharge he was 5" 10 1/2" tall, 148 pounds, brown eyes, brown hair.

AURORA, Mo. Vesper Neal Maxted, 74, Aurora, died at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 1997 at an Aurora nursing home after a long illness. Mr. Maxted was born July 19, 1924, near Wellington, Kan. He moved from to Aurora from Wichita, Kan., in 1982. He had worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita. He attended the House of Prayer in Springfield. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a tail gunner in a B-17 bomber with the 418th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group. He participated in 35 missions over occupied France. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal and six Oak Leaf Clusters. Survivors include a daughter, Anita Marks, Akron, Ohio; a son, Craig Maxted, Quinlan, Texas; five brothers, Vernon Maxted, Marshall, Duane Maxted, Sheridan, Wyo., Burke Maxted, Wichita, Kan., Stanley Maxted, Overton, Texas, and Arlen Maxted, Sandston, Va.; and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home, Aurora. The Rev. Vernon Maxted will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Park Cemetery, Aurora.

He died in Aurora Community Hospital.

He was a tailgunner in the Army Air Corps on B-17 type aircraft, s/sgt 37730957, 418th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group (H) participating in 35 operational missions over enemy occupied Europe, successfully shooting down one enemy aircraft and being awarded an Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters and 3 bronze stars. He was involved in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. He was later trained for 4 months as an airplane and engine mechanic. He finished his service in Sheppard Field, Texas.

The VA paid him to go to school in Tulsa, OK between March 1948 and February 1949 as a parachute rigger, airline service mechanic, and commercial pilot.
