" In 1788 Lieut. Thomas Lyford, the third settler i n t o w n , bought the land where the village of Cabot no w stan d s , an d in 1789 completed the first saw mill in C abot , o n th e Win ooski, at this place. The irons for thi s mil l we re ma de a t Newbury and drawn on a hand sled t o the m ill t he pre viou s winter. Mr. Lyford and his so n Thomas , Jr., s oon aft er bu ilt a grist mill with one r un of sto nes spli t out o f granit e. It occupied the sit e of the pr esent gri st mill . This mil l did grinding no t only for Ca bot, but f or town s miles away ."

" Lieut. Fifield Lyford was born in Exeter, N.H., i n 1 7 6 3 . At the age of thirteen years old he entered th e Rev ol ut io nary war as a servant to his father, Lieut . Thoma s Ly for d , and was with him one year at Tocondero ga. He t hen w en t t o West Point and was one of Gen. Arno old's lif e-guar ds , unt il the General proved a traitor t o our coun try. H e re maine d with the army until the clos e of the wa r. He m arrie d an d settled in Cabot in 1788 , and built o n his far m th e firs t framed barn in town . He served a s a lieutenan t i n th Wa r of 1812, was hono rably discharg ed, and receiv e d a pension . He died at th e home of his s on-in-law, T.E . W ilson, in Ca bot, Apri l 18, 1846, aged s eventy-nine yea rs."
