Drove from Charlestown Retirement Community to Denton, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to the home of her niece-in-law, Thelma Lyons, on April 15th, 1995. Her sister-in-law, Florence Lyons, and Thelma's daughter, Kate, were also there. They all dyed Easter eggs that night, and the next day started out to visit Thelma's two daughters and their families in Pennsylvania for Easter. In Sudlersville, someone went through a red light and hit them broadside. Thelma, who was driving, was killed, along with Betty, who was sitting behind the driver. The others were injured - Florence was medivaced to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, but all recovered.

Betty left an estate of about five million dollars, most of which went to her niece, Betty Lou, and her nephew's four children. One quarter of hers and her late husbands joint portion of the estate was left to Joseph's two sisters and two brothers. Regina Kelly, the only one still living, received her portion, and the other three portions went to his siblings children. After taxes, Regina received about one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars.

A scholarship at the prestigious Art Students Leag u e i n N e w York led to thirteen years of studying, teach in g, a nd p ro ducing art in New York, with exhibits in se ver al ga lleri es.

Later she spent time in Mexico where she appreciat e d a n d a bsorbed the culture, vivid colors, and art for m s of t ha t co untry. This proved to have a lasting infl ue nce o n he r work.

In 1983, she was commissioned to make a series of unbr e a k a ble picture windows for a major new psychiatric fac il i t y i n Atlanta. Researching the history and techniqu e o f s ta ine d glass for this project, the artist becam e fasc inat e d wit h the medium. She designed and produce d 32 wi ndow s m ade o f polyester resins which have the be auty an d th e loo k of st ained glass.

In 1987 she moved to Tucson, Arizona, where she be g a n a n e w business in stained glass creations. Duri n g a lo ng bo u t with cancer, she worked almost entirel y wi th pe n and i n k and water color.
