Married, first, Mary Williams, in 1741; second, Mari a Henrietta Bull; third, Lady Mary Mackenzie, widow of Joh n Ainslie, January 18, 1776. Acquired "Middleton Place" thr ough his first wife; laid out worId-famous gardens there; o wned almost 20 plantations, 50, 000 acres, 800 slaves. Cred ited with raising and supporting an entire regiment to figh t in the Revolutionary War. Died June 13, 1784 in Charlesto n; buried behind the chancel of St. James' Parish Church, B erkeley.
