As with all Scottish clans, the roots are lost in the mists of time, but the traditionel explanation of their origin states that they were founded by Shaw, son of MacDuff, the 3rd Earl of Fife. Shaw took the name of Mackintosh, or "Mac-an-toisich", meaning "son of the thane or chief". In 1163, he came to the north to help King Malcolm 1V supress a rebelion of the men of Moray. His reward was to be made keeper of the castle of Inverness and to receive the lands of Petty & Breachley, the Forest of Strathdean in the valley of Findhorn
