While researching my husband's Sloan connections I foundAlexanderSloan who was a merchant in Greenville, SC in the early days.He isburied at Springwood Cemetary. His grave simply says, "diedSeptember11, 1826 in the 40th year of his age, leaving a wife & 4 children".
His wife was Elizabeth D. Sloan and she is buried next to him. b.July8, 1797, died Nov. 10, 1844. I believe the "D" stands for Duncanasthere are other Duncans buried nearby AND that she is the sisterofMary, wife of Samuel Crayton - based on Mary's will.
Alexander Sloan was the executor of Thomas Crayton's will.ThomasCrayton was another merchant who had businesses in Craytonville,SC(below Anderson and now defunct. all that's left is theCraytonvillewell next to the highway), Augusta, GA, Greenville, SC.) Apparently Alexander Sloan and ThomasCraytonwere partners as there is mention of a business calledalternately"Crayton & Sloan" or "Sloan & Crayton". My husband isdescended fromThomas Crayton's brother, Samuel.
I have not been able (so far) to find a link between AlexanderSloanand David Sloan. I know from family accounts and from hisobituary inthe Pendleton Messenger, Oct. 1826, that David Sloan was a"native ofIreland". He "emigrated at an early age and fought in the Revolutionary War". Don't know ifhecame with a family group, which was often the case, and thatAlexanderSloan may have been a nephew..which is my currant favoritetheory...I'll keep searching. If you like, I'll keep you posted with any Sloan related findings.
