Daniel Maltbie/Maltby, son of William was a farmer b y o c c u pation. Whenhis father died, he l eft most of th e la n d a n d the farm to Daniel.

Daniel, like the rest of his family, was active in t h e C o n gregationalCurch of Branford - th e same church h i s fat h e r helped found. He became a Deacon of the chur ch.

After his father died, Daniel became the legal guar d i a n o f his youngerbrother John or Jonat hon as he wa s la t e r know n.

Daniel was 18th on the list of Freeman of Branfo r d - t h i s was a marke ofcommunity distincti on and prom in ence.

According to family records, Daniel fought in the In d i a n W ars. In theinventory of his estat e a sword is li s t e d - tes timony to his militaryservice.

Daniel and Esther Moss were married at the Branford Co n g r e gationalChurch on 27 October, 17 02 by the Reveran d S am u e l Russell. Esther wasalso from a prominent famil y, h e r fa m ily bein g old friends and fellowchurch membe rs.

Daniel Maltbie is buried at the Old Burial Grounds a t B r a n ford. Hisgrave is near his fathe r and mother's . Hi s t om bs tone no longer standsdue to vandalism.

In 1700, Daniel Maltbie joined the Church at Branfo r d . " E sther Moss, who was to become hi s wife, joine d t h e ch urc h at the same time. Theywere married Oct. 27 , 17 02 . (Br anfo rd Record ). She was the daughter ofJoh n Mos s ( or Mor se) a nd Mary Lothrop.

John Moss was a son of John Moss, New Haven Planters A s s o c iation, June4, 1639. Born in Eng land, 1604. Mem b e r o f 1 st General Court, 1639 and1648, 1649 and 166 4 . Mary Lothrop was dau. of Samuel Lothrop of New Lond o n , a n d wifeElizabeth Scudder. Samuel w as a son of Re v . "April 12, 1705. At a meeting of the Proprietors in B r a n f ord com- mencing March 25, and closing April 12, 17 0 5 , Da ni el Maltbie desired them to give him about 2 acr e s o f sed g y land, which was granted."

In 1710, William Maltby left "to my son Daniel, al l t h a t h ouse and land where he now lives."

(New Haven Probate Rec., Vol. III, p. 235) "October , 1 7 1 0 . Daniel Maltby was appointed guardian to Jonatho n M al tb ie , minor, son of Wm. Maltbie of Branford, decea sed."

This half-brother of Daniel was then but twelve ye a r s o f a ge. Heevidently remained Daniel' s ward but a s ho r t tim e, f or, (p. 66 New HavenRec.) we find: "Jonatho n M au ltbie , Mino r, chil d of Mr. William Maultbie, lat e of B ran ford , did app ear and made choice of Mr. Edwar d Bark e r of Branf ord to b e his guardian."

This is interesting as the first Allen Ball was o n e o f t h e first settlers of New haven. H e is though t t o b e a br ot her of William Ball of New Haven, conside re d as p ossibl y fa ther of Col. JohnBall, whose dau. Ma r y B all wa s mothe r o f George Washington. Note. In Daniel Maltby's will, 1731, there is no me n t i o n of Mary, b. 1703, Branford; nor of William, b. 17 0 5 , Br an ford; nor of John, b. 1722. It is evident tha t Ma r y lef t n o descendant or Daniel would have mentione d hi s g randch ild . Mary would have been 28 years old i n 1731 . De acon Ch arle s Foote in his MS. Genealogy of Ma ltby (p . 17 , Maltby- Moreh ouse Family) states, "Mary, (d au. of D aniel ) mar. --- - Good rich." This may well be t he case , as w e find: "Jul y 5, 173 0, Capt. Malbie's dee d from Go odrich . Land in Lit chfield f rom William Goodr ich of Cop ateneck , in ye provinc e of Mass . Bay, Yeoman , lately o f Litchfie ld, to Samuel Ma lt- bie o f Branford , of severa l parcels o f land in the Cre tch of Ban tam o r Mill Rive r for # 220. ( Litchfield Rec., V ol. I, p. 5 9 6)"

Daniel's son William evidently never married; and Dan i e l ' s son John would have been but nine years of age i n 1 73 1- -- hence must have died in his boyhood.
