BIO: The following biographical information is taken from that written by Park W. CARTER and based on the research of Mr. CARTER, his cousin, Glenn A. PARK and the copy of the biographical history of Central KANSAS cited in "References," above. Thomas was born and raised in Jefferson County, INDIANA. After his marriage to Jennett MANN in Jefferson County, 1842, the PARKS resided in that county. Three years later, they removed to LaPorte. IN, where they farmed for about 8 years. About 1853, the PARKs moved west to Boone County, IOWA. There Thomas spent some time operating a saw mill. Next, the family moved to Kankakee County, ILLINOIS, where Thomas was a tenent farmer for about six years. After a brief time near Paxton, Ford Co., IL, they resided on a farm near Hoopeston, in Vermilion County, where several of the PARK and HANNA families remained for many years. In 1872, Thomas took his family to Kingman County, KANSAS, near the small town of Waterloo. Then about 1884, Jennett (MANN) PARK's brother Andrew MANN gave his sister 160 acres approximately one mile south of Sterling, KS, in Rice County. Thomas and Jennett PARK raised seven children on their farm near Sterling, and were highly respected members of the community there. Thomas passed away there at the age of 81; Jennett died in Rice County two years later. Compiler found the marriage of Thomas and "Jannett MANN" PARK listed in the marriage index for Jefferson County, IN; per that record, the marriage took place 24 DEC rather than 28 DEC 1842. It is likely that the earlier date is the day the application for marriage was filed.

General Notes for Child James Andrew Park
enlisted in the Union Army at Vandalia, IL
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: : Park W. CARTER includes an extensive section on the oldest son of Thomas and Jennett MANN PARK and his military service. Excerpts of this biography follow: "James Andrew PARK,...enlisted in the Union Army at Vandalia, IL on 27 March 1863. On April 16 he was mustered in at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL as a private in Company L, 16th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry. ....In October, 1863, the 16th was ordered to Knoxville, Tennessee, and a portion of it participated in the memorable defense of that place in November and December. A detachment under Colonel THIELMAN constituted the garrison at Cumberland Gap, and one battalion, under Major BEERS, was sent up Powell's Valley in the direction of Jonesville, VIRGINIA, a tiny village in the extreme southwestern part of the state. On the 3rd of January, 1864, the battalion was attacked by three brigades of LONGSTREET's command ... it was compelled to surrender. The loss ...was 356 men and 56 officers. Pvt. PARK...was taken to Belle Isle prison camp, on the James River... On March 21st, then seriously ill from typhoid fever or as a result of starvation, he was included in a prisoner exchange, and was sent to the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis, Maryland. He died shortly afterward, on April 1, 1864, and is buried at Annapolis National Cemetery...in Section K, grave no. 936..." Mr. CARTER goes on to comment that many other members of Company L were moved to the Andersonville Prison Camp in GEORGIA soon after PARK's hospitalization; many of them are buried there. Mr. CARTER's biography of James PARK includes letters from Pvt. PARK to his parents and a letter from R.M. BILLINGS,U.S. Hospital at Annapolis to James PARK's mother, informing her of the details of James' illness and death. It is also of interest here to add that one of the men in this Company L with James PARK was a Pvt. John McELROY who was later to write "This Was Andersonville," one of the most famous books concerning the Civil War.

General Notes for Child William Arnott Park
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Per the PARK Genealogy, rev. 1973, William A. PARK and his wife ANNA B. FRANCE resided in Hoopeston, Vermilion County, Illinois where Wm. operated a coal yard in the early 1800s. The couple later moved to Sterling, Rice County, Kansas to be near William's parents. There they resided on a small farm on the south edge of Sterling. There was a small lake on their farm ("Silver Lake") which was a popular swimming hole and ice skating spot. In their later years the family moved into a house at the northwest corner of Third and Adams Streets in Sterling. William was a member of the Session at the United Presbyterian Church there for several years. The PARK Genealogy reports that William and Anna B. PARK had five children, three sons and two daughters. While the following information is not confirmed by this genealogy, it can be found in U.S. Census for 1900, Hanover Twp., Jefferson Co. IN. Apparently this couple went from ILLINOIS to INDIANA for a period of at least eleven years. Per the 1900 Census, the first of their chilren, Isabella G. was born in ILLINOIS in 1883. The other four children were reported to have been born in INDIANA. Edith J. was born in 1885; Earl G. was born in 1888; Lee F., born in 1890 and Harold F. in 1896...all in "INDIANA." Also enumerated in William and Anne B.'s household was "James D. FRANCE, age 77, widowed, born in PA. James is listed as William A. PARK's father- in-law. James' parents were reportedly born in SCOTLAND. Considering that the family was in IN in 1900, that the PARK Genealogy states that they went to KANSAS to be nearer to William's parents, compiler assumes that they must have gone to KS shortly after census enumeration , 23 JUNE 1900, because Thomas, William's father died in 1900; Jennett, Thos.' wife died 16 FEB. 1902 in Sterling, KS. There are several discrepancies in the data for William's children: Grace PARK (genealogy) is listed as Isabelle G. (census) Harold F. was born 31 March 1900 (genealogy); he was born March, 1896 (census) and was 4 years old when the census enumeration was done in 1900.

General Notes for Child Thomas Alexander Park
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The PARK Genealogy gives the following information about Thomas A. PARK: He was born in northern IN, near LaPorte, and later went to IL with his parents. Toward the end of the Civil War, while still only a boy, Tom joined the Union Army and became part of the foraging unit of his company. He contracted typhoid fever and was left in the open country in TX, where he was found by Indians and nursed back to health. At the end of the war, he became a sheep rancher near Mason, TX. (Park W. CARTER writes, "I was never able to get any more info on the C.W. part of his history. He's not listed among the IL veterans. He may not have actually 'joined,' or it may be a 'legend'.") Here (Mason, TX) he met Louise Barbara MUELLER. Louise was from Dubuque, IOWA. Her parents were German-Swiss and had immigrated to the U.S. from Zurich, SWITZERLAND in about 1850. Tom and Louise were married in 1880 at Mason, and all of their children were born at the ranch there. About 1893 they gave up their ranch and Tom drove a wagon to Hartshorne, OK, to claim land in the new OK Territory. Louise and the 3 children later followed by train...to become pioneer settlers. Thomas A. and Barbara PARK had three children: Jeannett PARK (b. 1883 m. 1899 to Ernest COLE) Joseph PARK (b. 1885) Thomas Edward PARK (b. 2 MAY 1888 m. 1922 to Mildred Andrea DANIELSON d. 17 FEB 1964 in Coral Gables, FL)

General Notes for Child Mary Jane Park
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Per the PARK Genealogy, Mary Jane was born near LaPorte, IN. She moved to Kingman Co. KS, with her parents. In Waterloo, she married Henry W. LAKEY. The couple lived on a farm near Waterloo until her father died in 1900. After her father's death, the couple moved to the PARK homestead south of Sterling where they continued farming. The couple had three sons. Little is known about the two eldest sons, Thomas and Elmer. Thomas is known to have farmed near Topeka, KS, about 1915. James, the younges son, stayed at home and continued farming the home place for many years after his parents died. About 1895, James married Clara YOUNG of Sterling, KS. James and Clara had three sons and three daughters. This family eventually moved to ARKANSAS, where James and Clara spent their remaining years on a farm near Sulphur Springs.

General Notes for Child Margaret Jennett Park
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The PARK Genealogy, compiled by Glenn M. PARK, states that Margaret Jennett PARK was born near Buds Point and Boonesborough, IA. She migrated to Vermilion County, IL with her parents. There she met Washington Irving CARTER, whose parents had come there from N.H. The young couple was married in Hoopeston, IL by Rev. J. Francis LYNN. They remained on a farm in that county for about 10 years; during that time all four of their children were born. In 1885 the family moved to Rice County, KS, where Irving bought a farm east of Sterling. After their children were grown, the couple moved into Sterling.

General Notes for Child Joseph Ebenezer Park
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Joseph E. PARK was the ancestor of Glenn M. PARK, compiler of the PARK Genealogy ( son of Glenn A. PARK.) Per the data cited by Glenn PARK, Joseph was born while his family was living near Paxton in Ford Co. IL. He married Ann Louise SCHLAGER at Sterling, Rice Co. KANSAS, in 1891. The young couple lived with Thos. and Jennett PARK for two years after their marriage. They moved to a farm in Washington Twp.approximately 6 miles east of Sterling about 1897. About 1906, Joseph gave up farming and moved into Sterling, where he carried on a building and construction business. During this time Joseph served as Township Assessor and Justice of the Peace. In 1920 they sold their home and built a new one in Sterling. In his later years, Joseph retired from the building business, and acted as caretaker for the United Presbyterian Church, which was located across the street from his home. In 1943, the couple sold their home in Sterling, and moved to Parsons, KS, where they lived with their daughter Elsie. Joseph and Ann Louise had three children--two sons, Ralph Herbert and Glenn Albert, and a daughter, Elsie Maude, who later married John WILSON, a farmer from Garnett, KANSAS. Elsie and her husband later established a Dairy Delite Ice Cream Business, with stores in Parsons and later, at Miami, OK. In later years this couple moved to Sherman, TX, to be near their son John. Ralph Herbert PARK entered the field of education, and was in Lincoln, NE, until his death. Prior to his retirement, he was Building Maintenance Superintendent of the public school system there. The youngest son, Glenn Albert graduated from the University of NEBRASKA, majoring in Electrical Engineering, and joined the Long Lines Dept. of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. He married Margaret Irene McARTHUR. This couple's son, Glenn McArthur PARK was the compiler of the genealogy. Glenn and Margaret retired in Santa Ana, CALIFORNIA.
