(VI) Dr. Samuel Sackett, son of Reuben Sackett, was born April 5, 1754, died
February 13, 1833. In his diary, still preserved, he says he was born at
East Greenwich, Kent, Litchfield county, Connecticut. On August 2, 1774, he
was living in Spencertown, Connecticut. He studied medicine, and during the
revolutionary war served in the Continental army as surgeon. On February 10
1777, he was married and in 1780, in company with his brother Aaron, he came
to Western Pennsylvania. In a letter still preserved, dated Shistee
Settlement, Youghiogheny county, October 27, 1780, he writes to friends in
Connecticut: "I do not think I can cross the mountains back home until
spring. There are no doctors here between Pittsburg and Wheeling, and all
the way is thickly settled. It is a healthy looking country. I do not think
I will get much to do until I get acquainted with the people. Tell Jonathan
Hamilton I think this is the best place for land jobbing in the thirteen
states, and in case of invasion by Indians it is supposed that fifteen
hundred men would rid them out." In the family record, under date of
September 15, 1781, he writes: "We set out from New England to come to
Redstone township, and arrived at Beesontown, or Uniontown, on October 16,
1781. The following children were born at Beesontown: Betsey, April 4,
1782; Lucinda, March 5, 1784; Alexander, January 10, 1786; Mary Anna,
September 3, 1788. On November 10, 1788 we moved to Georges creek, Fayette
county, Pennsylvania, where the following children were born: Annie,
November9, 1790; Lydia, November 22, 1792; Samuel, September 21, 1793; Sarah,
October 20, 1797, married Dr Louis Marchant, of Huguenot descent." These
entries are in the doctor's handwriting. His eldest son, Alexander, born in
Pennsylvania, studied medicine with his father and served as surgeon in the
war of 1812. He was attached to Genral Harrison's command and died of fever
at Fort Neigs, aged twenty-seven years. His first born son Reuben (not named
previously), learned the printer's trade in Pittsburgh in 1802 at the Gazette
office. In 1803 he went to Alexandria, on the Red river, Louisiana, where he
was thrown from his horse and killed, being then aged forty-nine years. His
second son, David (not mentioned previously), learned the saddler;s trade in
Pittsburgh and later studied medicine with his father. He located in
Centerville, Indiana, where he died, aged eighty-four years. His children:
Guiliena, Elizabeth, James, Alexander, Emily, Mary, Martha, David, Margaret,
and Agnes.
Dr. Sackett was probably the first physician to practice in Fayette county.
He was skillful, successful in his practice and held in highest esteem. He
moved in 1788 from Uniontown to the fame (?farm?) yet known as the old
Sackett homestead on Georges Creek, one mile south of Smithfield. He
continued hes practice and cultivated his farm until his death in 1833. Dr.
Sackett's wife was Sarah Manning, to whom he was married in Sharon,
Connecticut, by Rev. Smith, February 10, 1777. Children (not previously
mentioned): Reuben, born January 16, 1778 died 1823; David Filer, January
18, 1780, died 1864, married Martha Milliken. They were born at Kent, East
Greenwich, Litchfield.
The Sacketts have in their possession many souvenirs of the good doctor,
dating back into the eighteenth century. There are ninteen copies of the
Pittsburg Gazette to which paper he was a subscriber, and on which his son
was a sompositor, dates 1794, 1795, and 1796. There are fourteen letters
over one hundred years old written him from friends in Connecticut. There
are $700 in Continental money, the largest note being for $80, the smallest
two shillings. Probably this money represents his pay as surgeon in the
army. There is a doctor's account book printed in London in 1603, and an
account book of Dr. Sackett's in which the oldest date is 1774.

The following is a letter from Reuben Sackett to his Father Dr. SamuelSackett;
Opelousas, Territory of Orleans August 19th 1807
I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from you not longsince;
also one from Alexander, his I have answered and also wrote one to you
prior to the receipt of your letter, accompanied Opelousas with a rough
plat of this ca(untry?). I have just returned from a surveying
excurtion of ten weeks on the River Koleashaes and its waters and expect
in (? ?) to return there again; I have enjoyed a good state of health
since my residence in this Cauntry and find by observation that it is
remarkable healthy in general - we thelast winter experienced the
most trying and severe cold one ever known in this Latittude, and
immence quantities of Rain, on the contrary the present warm season has
been very dry and many suffered (?in?) their crops in consequence, yet
the country is Clear of sickness. I have already sufficiently
(?expaliated?) on the beauty, health (?) situation of this and
Attuckapas country, much might be said, I leave principally to abler
pens than mine to discuss - to anticipate what this Country / speaking
of Louisania / will in a short time be; should no internal commotion,
nor foreign invasion take place, is at this time incalculable - the
Climate and Latitude inables the planters to labor at least nine months
in the year during which time thair is abundance of grasses for all (?)
of stock - our natural meadows exceed aby thing you have an idea off.
mow the hay and stock will do well. there has as yet mever been an
instance of one feeding his (?stock?) in the winter. - the severety of
the past winter willl of course in (?)member to cut hay. - I extoll
this sountry principally from (?) axioms and the proximity of commerce,
combined with the great ?pro)duct of agriculture, an acre producing with
Care and attention from 50 to 80 dollars if cultivated in Cotton, if
Corn from 30 to 50. the procieds of Indigo and Tobaco equat (7 ?) Corn
- The Sugar Cane yet superior to Cotton
In a few words I'll come to the point
we have a fine open airy Country capable of producing abund(ance?) of
articles as the climate abounds with, nature has done (?) it is a
Stranger in the Land. an increase of Population the main object at this
time, the United States very thick settled, living upon rented Lands
under auspicies of ignoble potentates &duly act to their capriciousness.
there is millions upon millions of acres in Louisania like the foliage
in the evening Silently waiting the dues to survive its drooping head.
Land of good (?)ity to bee had from 50 cents to 2 dollars per acre.
Whare is the man who from a moments reflection willacknowledge
and subject himself the Slave tho indirectly, of any land holder, is
this consistent with the character of the American Citizen - I trust
not I hope not Since a Sufficient Outlet and Succour for (the) hardy and
intreped American is in the bosom of Louisania.
You objeect to the country on various points (?) the climateand
sick]y. I answer we have moverate warm weather 8 or 9 months in the
year. in July and August the heat is repelled by the fine solub(lime?)
Sea (?) breases, wafting over our delightful plains in (?) caountr~es
and climates animals are incident to fevers ign(?) impurdency are the
mother of those direful mallidies
3d the Climate and Country is inimical to the culture of some other
smaler grains - I answer we can reise it (at an?) advantage; but now
let reason argue. I ask aug(?) to attempt it, has not nature given us
an opulent advantage if the northern farmer can make from the Same
quantity of Land in raising Buck wheet which is sown in the summer and
reaped in (...?) fall will he cultivate Rye which is 12 months from the
(...?) sown before he can prepare it for market
I without Reserve give it to my opinion this Country is superior (for?)
(?gro)wing every thing to any other part I have been in - (an)d as I
have before said should no interruption take place will increase become
rich and populous I have been much preplexed by Burrs plans andWilkinsons intollerance;
at a leap to conjecture much less I (?)m an oppinion - but from every
circumstance and what (I?) witnessed last fall being one who
vallunteered in the Ar(my of?) my Country to protect her defencseless
frontiers from (the) outrages of the Spaniard
hazard a conjecture that (?) was a design and that Wilkinson was as
deeply conser(ned?) as Burr; and that jealousey and fear insuced him to
open the Scheams to the government - I hope Burr as an instance may
put a stop to reason in future - it is also rum(ored) that we will
shortly be engaged in a war with the British I have seen a
proclamation of the President amounting nearly (to) a declaration of
war, with some spitited Resolutions of the Citizens of Virginia.
intimating the British has within our grasp vunurable and valuable
pointa - they must allude to Canada, an idea strikes me it would be a
bad policy to have anything to do with that Country at this time, - I
admit the undertaking could be accomplished, Upper (and?) Lower Canedy,
each are large populous Countries, Sufficient to form 2 powerful states
which we must immediately admit into the Union, then more than likely it
will change the face of our present political System, and throw the (?)
balance in favor of the anglofederal party - I am induced to think the
better way would be to stop all payments due the British by our Citizens
and Conviscate the Bank stock belonging to that government and subjects
with in the United States.
I think if you would visit the Country, you would (beT)induced to
remain here. I should be happy to see David & A(...) here - they are
young might obtain land here, and settle to (?) here - my respect to
my beloved mother, Brothers and individually and Mr. Woodbridge his
family and inquiring friends I shall write again shortly - tell Mr.
Ball kno(w?) fine prospects are in these parts - Excuse the long
jncorrectness of this letter. and
With due Respect and esteem I remain your affectionate
Son Reuben Sackett

General Notes for Child Samuel Sackett
[mytree.FTW]
Following provided by Thurmon E. King;
Here is the last part of the portion of the Genealogical and Personal History
of Fayette County, Pennsylvania which relates to the family of Dr. Samuel
Sackett's family:
(VII) Samuel (2), son of Dr. Samuel Sackett, was born in Georges Township,
Fayette county, Pennsylvania, on the home farm, September 21, 1795, died
April 27, 1860. He grew up on the home farm and was educated in the schools
available at that early day. Being the youngest son, he remained with his
parents, and after his father's death became the owner of the homestead.
While yet a young man he left the farm and for a few years conducted a
general store in Smithfield. Later he returned to the farm, where his after
life was spent. He was a man of quiet tastes and habits, a great reader and
lover of history. He was an ardent Whig, and strongly opposed to human
slavery, being classed among the then despised abolitionists. He and his
wife were members of the Presbyterian church. He married Priscilla Caldwell,
daughter of William and Rachel (Cross) Caldwell. Children: 1. Alexander,
born November, 1832, died February, 1900, he was a machinist and resided in
Pittsburgh; unmarried; 2. William, born July 1834; he was a farmer and stock
raiser of Georges township, now living retired in Smithfield, Pennsylvania;
married Millie Everhart, who is also living; children: Hugh, who owns the
farm settled by Samuel Sackett in 1788; Marchant and Carrie. 3. Lucinda,
born March 14, 1836, died August, 1911; married, October, 1856, Laurence
Crawford, who survives shr; he was formerly a merchant of Greensboro, Greene
county, Pennsylvania. Children: Ortella and George Harry. 4. Elizabeth C.,
of whom further. 5. Louisa, born March 3, 1844; now resides in Smithfield,
Pennsylvania.
(VIII) Elizabeth Caroline, fourth child of Samuel and Priscilla (Caldwell)
Sackett, was born in Smithfield, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, May 9, 1839.
Her early life was spent on the old homestead in Georges township, where she
was educated at Georges Creek Academy. She married, March 3, 1859, William
Nixon Brownfield (See: Brownfield). After her husband's death Mrs.
Brownfield moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with her daughters, where she
has resided since 1898, at No. 12 Nutt avenue. She is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church and a most vivacious, courteous, charming lady of
"ye olden time."
[Following the account of the Sacketts is the account of the Brownfields.
However, this account continues onto page 345, which was not copied. -
