BIO: In 1996, contact with Marjorie Walsh, through the Claiborne Historical Society, brought documentation of William Sherman's existence. In an article, "O'DELL, ODLE, ODEL, ODIL UPDATE", Mrs. Walsh first mentioned that a fifth child, William Sherman ODEL was born later (after the 1862 birth of Marshall's daughter, China.) In April, 1996, Mrs. Walsh sent compiler a copy of a family group of William Sherman O'Dell which had been constructed from data provided by William's granddaughter, Bessie Kunkle. It should be noted that the marriage date for William to Nancy MARSEE, appears 3 months after William's death. This could be a typographical, but the same year is recorded as the birth year of William's son, Jonathon. The marriage date is given as 12 OCT 1899; the death date as 21 JUL 1899 and Jonathon's birth date as 13 AUG 1899. No references were given except for the name of Bessie Kunkle. Jul, 1996: Compiler received a copy of Marshall's Civil War Pension File. This contained an update of data which Marshall completed at the request of the Pension Board in 1898. On this update, Marshall lists among his living children, William S., whose birthdate is given as 14 APR 1866. Since the first son of Wm. and Isabelle was born in August of 1897, it is likely that the marriage date for the couple should be 1896. William's death date, then may be 1899; if this is true, however, his son, Wm. Jonathon, was born about one month after Wm. died. William Sherman was 4 years old at the time of the 1870 census enumeration. The 1880 census enumeration for the household of Marshall and Sarah O'DELL shows

BIO: Marjorie Walsh had provided data about this wife of William Sherman O'Dell. However, the date of this couple's marriage is nearly three months after William's death. (m. 12 OCT 1899; d. 21 JUL 1899). Noting the date of birth of the couple's first child, it seems likely the year of marriage should be 1896. The first son was born August, 1897; the second child August 1899. Mrs. WALSH did not include Nancy's parents in her data. Compiler found two possible candidates on the 1880 census for Claiborne County, TN. "Chadwell MARSEE" and wife, "Manerva", both in their early 40s have a daughter, Nancy B., listed in 1880, but this Nancy was 13 years old in 1880. This would calculate to a birth year of about 1867, which would mean this Nancy MARSEE would have been nearly 30 at the time of her marriage. The other possible parents for Nancy (MARSEE) O'DELL would be Joseph MARSEE, 30 years of age in 1880 and his wife, whose name is very difficult to decipher (maybe "Suselender"?), 22. This couple reported a daughter, "Nancy J." (the "J" could easily be an "I") who was 8 years of age in 1880. The latter seems more likely, since Nancy J. would have been about 24 at the time William S. O'DELL and his Nancy MARSEE were probably married. It may be significant, however, that William S. and Nancy O'DELL named a son "Chadwell." NOTE: Chadwell and Minerva MARSEE appear on the 1860 census for Claiborne Co., also. They are both in their 20s and have three children, William, 3; John A., 2 and Angeline, 1. Chadwell was reportedly born in KY; the others all born in TN. (1st Sub., Tazewell P.O.; p 3; HH #33.)
