BIO: "Red" O'DELL, in spite of his frequent use of swear words and almost constant teasing, was loved by his family and highly esteemed by friends and neighbors. He was a "red neck" in many ways but one of the most caring and generous people compiler has ever known. When anyone, family, friends or neighbors, had problems and needed help, "Red" was there. Compiler remembers many stories of members of the extended family being out of work or ill and having food supplied from Red's farm or from groceries he bought and took to them. Still, this man knew trouble of his own. Twin daughters died in infancy and a son also died at birth after 1926. His beloved wife, Sarah, suffered from mental illness and after several years of trying to care for her at home, Red had to raise his two boys alone when Sarah was committed to the Mental Hospital in Logansport,IN. She never returned for more than a short visit. John G. O'DELL died at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, IN. His obituary read as follows:
" July 26, 1952: J.G."Red" O'DELL DIES AT WOODLAWN A serious illness of six months duration ended in death at noon Saturday at Woodlawn Hospital for John G. O'Dell, 67, of RFD 3, Argos, where he had resided for a number of years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Church in Richland Township, with the Rev. Myron M. Kottke, officiating. Burial will be in South Germany Cemetery. The deceased, a veteran of World War I, had engaged in farming until about two years ago, when he found employment at the Kingsbury Ordance Plant until failing health forced his retirement. He was a member of the LeRoy C. Shelton Post, American Legion. Born July 29, 1894, in Kentucky, he was the son of W.F. and Virginia PHELPS O'DELL. His marriage was in 1919 to Sarah Marshall who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Robert Arthur and Gilbert Leroy of here; five brothers and four sisters: Lacy, Nowata, Okla.; Samuel H., Springfield, Ohio; Thomas L., Plymouth; Isaac M., Nowata, Okla.; Hubert, Sidney, IN; Mrs. Russell Warren, Nowata; Mrs. Virgil Gilchrist, Jeffersonville, IN; Mrs. Lester Houston, South Bend; Mrs. Walter Williams, Plymouth. The body rests at the Foster Funeral Home, to be removed to the church for the service Tuesday".
NOTE: Obituary gives Red's age as "67"; it should have read "57". The personal description of John Gilbert O'DELL taken from his draft registration card: 23 years of age "Medium" height "Stout" body build "Gray" eyes "Red" hair ("bald") NO
(Wilma MOW FOLTZ, a cousin to Sarah MARSHALL O'DELL, wrote the following comments in a letter to compiler, June, 1994). "Red was real good to Sarah's family. He kept Frank and Aunt Lydia like they were his own family...Sarah's brother Frank lived with them and helped with the farming. When they lived on the Brewer place Frank started acting funny---talking to himself and getting mad over nothing. He kept getting worse, he said something to his mother and she laughed and he got real mad. Red talked with the county doctor and they examined him (Frank) and put him in Longcliff, a mental hospital at Logansport. I don't know when he died. We never heard from Roy. We didn't know about Sarah's death till I read it in the newspaper. She was buried the same day...." **************** March, 1996: Hubert H. O'DELL, Red's youngest brother, loaned compiler the Family Record Sheets from his mother's Bible. Recorded on two of the sheets were the following: (In what seems to be a man's writing in green ink--perhaps Frank, his father) "John j Odell was Borned July th1 29 1894." The fifth child entered on a list of all Frank's children on a different page and (apparently in a female's writing--Maggies' ?) "John G. O'dell were Borned July 29 1894" Beside that entry in darker ink is written "Laurel Co. Ky." The 1920 census shows "Red" enumerated in his parents' household. His age is given as "25", occupation "general labor." This enumeration was taken 02 January 1920, just five months before "Red" married Sarah MARSHALL. BIO: Compiler never knew "Aunt Sarah", but the family reports of her illness and years of hospitalization were so familiar that it seemed that we were well acquainted. Sarah was a beautiful and talented young girl. She was for a time the sweetheart of compiler's father, Virgil GILCHRIST. Virgil told many stories of Sarah attending musical concerts, hearing for the first time a piano arrangement, then going home and playing it the same way on her piano. Sarah knew heartache. In 1924, she gave birth to twin girls who both died in infancy. Later, after 1926, a son died at birth. There was a history of mental illness in Sarah's family; a brother took his own life. While her two sons were quite young, Sarah was committed to the State Mental Hospital in Logansport, IN. She never returned home except for short visits. Sometime after the death of her husband in 1952, Sarah was moved to the Indiana Veteran's Home in Lafayette. She died there in 1989. Her obituary in the Fulton/Marshall newspaper reads as follows:
"SARAH L. O'DELL Sarah Louise O'Dell, 88, formerly of Fulton County died at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Indiana Veteran's Home, Lafayette, where she had lived for several years. She was born Aug. 31, 1900 in Rochester to George and Lydia O'Blenis Marshall. Her husband, John Gilbert O'Dell, died in 1952. Surviving are a son, Gilbert, Plymouth; two grandchildren Miss Suzanne Marie O'Dell, Plymouth; and Douglas Bryan O'Dell, Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Arthur. Graveside services were to be at 11 a.m. today at the South Germany Cemetery, northwest of Rochester. Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, was in charge of the arrangements."
Wilma MOW FOLTZ; Rochester, IN related the following stories to compiler in a letter, June, 1994. Wilma's mother and Sarah's mother were sisters.
"Red and Sarah lived south-west of Argos when Sarah started acting funny. I don't think she and Red had any problems but one day she decided she was going to live with Aunt Nora WRIGHT, a sister to Aunt Lydia (her mother)...and to my mom. Red took her to Burr Oak--2-3 miles north of Culver. While she was staying there Bob graduated from Richland Center. Bob and I were in the same class, 1939. Sarah wanted to see Bob graduate so Aunt Nora fixed sandwiches and a bottle of water and Sarah started walking to my folks house (20+ miles). Some farmer picked her up and brought her all the way. She got to see Bob graduate. That summer she started acting strange. Aunt Nora was afraid to keep her so Aunt Lydia and Sarah got an apartment in Rochester. Sarah kept getting worse so the doctor sent her to Longcliff..." (Logansport) "Suppose now the Drs. could help but 50 years ago they didn't have the medicine--or know how..."
Sarah was 19 years of age when enumerated in her parents' household, 02 January 1920.

BIO: Bob was a favorite cousin of compiler. He was close to compiler's parents and often came
from his Dayton, OH home to visit the GILCHRIST home in Jeffersonville, IN. During summer visits to northern Indiana, compiler often spent a few days at the O'DELL farm near Argos. These times were most enjoyable when Bob was "home" for a few days. Bob, his father and his brother, Roy, were frequently at the homes of the WARRENs or the WILLIAMs when compiler visited there. It was not unusual for the three "bachelors" to appear at one of their aunt's breakfast tables. They were always welcomed and their presence insured home made biscuits and gravy would be on the menu. About 1951, compiler and parents with brother Bob spent a week at Christmas with relatives in northern Indiana. On the way home, Bob fell asleep while standing in the back of the car. Apparently he started to fall backward; his sleeve caught on the door handle of the center opening door and allowed the wind to whip it open throwing Bob out of the car. After treatment at the emergency room in the Peru Hospital, we were advised to take him home and check with the family doctor there. Bob O'DELL was at our home when we arrived. While brother Bob was being examined at the "home" hospital, cousin Bob was a strong source of comfort to compiler. (The following obituary was copied and supplied by Wilma MOW FOLTZ)
" ROBERT O'DELL Robert A. O'Dell, 53, former Richland Center and Argos resident, died unexpectedly Saturday evening at his residence in Dayton, Ohio. He was born Oct. 1, 1921, at Richland Center to John and Sarah Marshall O'dell. He had resided in Ohio since 1949, moving from Argos. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Dayton American Legion. He was a lab supervisor at Wright Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Sarah O'Dell, and one brother, Gilbert O'Dell, both of Argos. Final rites will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Grossman funeral home in Argos. The Rev Frank Valeriano will officiate. Cremation will be at the Riverview cemetery in South Bend. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Knightstown Soldiers and Sailors Home."
Wilma MOW FOLTZ related this family story in a letter, June, 1994 "Red and Sarah lived northwest of Rochester on the Brewer farm. Sarah's mother and brother lived with them. One evening Red looked out the door and saw Bob standing on the rear "hocks" of a horses' legs, hanging onto the tail while getting a "free" ride around the barn." BIO: The following account of the birth of the twins comes from a letter written to compiler by Wilma MOW FOLTZ.
"Aunt Lydia told me about Sarah and Red's twin daughters. Bob was about 3 years old. Sarah didn't feel good so lay down on the bed. Some neighbor came by and Red went out to the road to visit. Sarah started having pains and told Bob to go out and get his dad. Bob got mixed up and got in behind the bedroom door---pushed it shut and couldn't get out. The girls were born--one dead or died shortly after..." Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED
