The Martaine family were evidently of French origin and thename became Martin in common parlance.  They held land inHanover, Spotsylvania and in Orange counties as shown byrecords and associations.

Robert Martaine's will dated 1781, and proved 1783, OrangeCounty, names wife Ann Martaine, and children:  HenryMartane (his will 1757 names father, mother, sisters andbros.); Ann Martane, m. John Whit e; George Martane; AmeliaMartane, m. John Brockman; Robert Martane; Frances Martane,m. after 1757; Mary Martane, m. John Young; Sarah Martane,m. John Young as his second wife; Richard Martane, m._____ _________d. before 1781 leaving issue; ElizabethMartane, m. ______ Howard.

Quoting from Robert Martane's will "I cut off myson-in-law, John Young with 1 shilling for marrying hiswife's sister".  "I cut off my daughter Sarah with oneshilling for marrying her brother-in-law."
