She was born almost blind,and later her eyes were burned; then she was declared legally blind. Shewent to a blind school in GA. She worked in a dairy to help raise herchildren. She died 7-10 d before Bessie gave birth to Joe.
Hilyer was working on a farm when she met Jay, who came to GA tovisit a friend of his, who had the farm that Hilyer was working on at thetime.
