General Notes (Husband)
[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]
William M. Maxwell was a county judge of Linn County. He helped to organize the first M.E. Church in Jefferson township in 1841, known as the Oak Arbor church. The meetings were held in a little log schoolhouse located in the northeast corner of the Jacob Sensintaffar farm - the Oak Arbor Schoolhouse. Among the first members of this church were William and Betsey Maxwell, Jacob and Nancy Sensintaffar and their daughter Rebecca and her husband Mike Whitley. About 1875 a new frame schoolhouse was built nearer the center of the district a mile northeast of the little log schoolhouse. This was called "Oak Arbor" also, and was still standing in 1951. - - - By Emma Sincentaffer Baker
The following remark is from Sarah Duckworth Gross, a granddaughter of William and Elizabeth:
Grandpa Maxwell was tall and slender, light hair and blue eyes. He was a well educated man for his time. Rather dignified looking but very likable, I don't think he ever had an enemy.
" The First Train Ride"— When Janie (Rebecca Jane Holland) was about a year old the Burlington ran their first train between Brookfield and Laclede. William Maxwell lived just across the road from the railroad and all the relatives met at Uncle Billie's to see the first train. It made a terrible noise. One said, "What a racket! It sounds like the world was coming to an end." Another "That train could jump the track and kill all of us." Soon afterward the railroad ran an excursion to Hannibal, Mo., and George and Martha Holland took their first train ride. Janie had her first pair of shoes little green ones and lost one of them on the trip.
There is no name or date on the copy of the following obituary, but it is assumed that it appeared in the Brookfield, MO newspaper.
Died, Monday, August 8, at 7 o'clock p.m. at the residence of his son, J.E. Maxwell, William M. Maxwell, aged 80 years, 9 months and 14 days. Judge Maxwell was one of the original settlers of Linn County. He came to this state from Tazewell County, Virginia, in 1838, and settled near the forks of Yellow Creek, in Chariton County, where he resided two years, after which he removed to Jefferson (then Locust Creek) township, first living on the land owned by Richard Parker on Turkey Creek southeast of Laclede. He remained on this land but a short time, when he entered the land still know as the Maxwell farm on the Brookfield and Laclede road, building a house on that part now owned by James Stark. He continued to reside in that neighborhood until three years since, when he came to Brookfield to live with his son.
He was married to Elizabeth Sensintaffar May 17, 1832, who still survives him. Seven sons and two daughter are living and two daughters are dead. He served as Judge of the Linn County court from 1854 to 1858 and from 1858 to July, 1860, at which time he resigned. He was a member of the M.E. (Methodist Episcopal) church South, having become a member of that church at 18 years of age. During a large part of his life he was class leader in the M.E. church. His house, in the early days of Linn County, when churches were scarce, was frequently used for church services. His funeral took place at Brookfield cemetery Tuesday August 9, Rev. Grant Creekmore officiating. James Maxwell, of Moulton, Iowa and E.C. Maxwell, of Bates County, Mo, were present.
General Notes (Wife)
[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]
The following sketch was written by Sarah Duckworth Gross, a granddaughter of William and Elizabeth:
Grandma-everybody loved her. She was so kind and good. How I loved to stay there! She was not very tall, a little stooped. Her hair was thin and gray as I remember her. She was jolly and had such a sweet disposition. I never saw her angry. I remember when a child that we went to spend the day at Uncle Billy’s (Wm. M.) We children were sitting in the living room in a row in high back chairs-very quietly. We were taught when in company "children should be seen and not heard." Uncle Billie and father and mother were visiting, Aunt Betsey getting dinner. She came in and seeing us sitting there said, "Would you children like to go out in the back yard? It is shady there, and there are six little kittens getting their dinner. And two little ducks trying to swim in their drinking pan. And a croquet set if you like to play croquet." Of course, we wanted to go and what a good time we had. Aunt Betsey was a wonderful cook. I'll never forget her strawberry preserves. No wonder her daughters, Martha and Mary, were such good cooks. (The information for this sketch was taken from a book written by Emma Sensintaffar Baker)
OBITUARY OF ELIZABETH (SINSENTAFFAR) MAXWELL
(Date of her death was April 12, 1895 in Brookfield, Missouri. There was no note as to which newspaper this was but assume it was Brookfield paper)
The sudden death of Mrs. Elizabeth Maxwell, of this city, last Wednesday, was quite unexpected, she having complained only of an acute pain in her side, which was not considered serious.
Mrs. Maxwell was the mother of our young townsman, Joseph Maxwell, and the wife of the late Wm. Maxwell, who died only eight months ago. Since the death of her husband, she had been living with her daughter, four miles southwest of this city, until Thursday, of last week, when she came to town to reside with her son.
Mrs. Maxwell was nearing her eightieth birthday and when she passed away death came like the quiet of sleep. The funeral services were preached at the residence, on Dake's addition, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Charles K. Hoyt, of the Presbyterian church, conducting the service.
General Notes for Child William Henry Maxwell
[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]
From Emma Sincentaffar Baker: Served in the Confederate Anny under General Price during the Civil War with his brother John Maxwell and his cousins William and Charles Whitley and half-uncle Rufus Sensintaffar.
Bill married his cousin Lutisha Whitley about 1868. Bill and Lutisha moved to Bonham, Texas, about 1870 with her father, Mike Whitley and family, and the Bob Whitleys. In 1890 the J. D. General Notes for Child Martha Lutisha Maxwell
[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]
From Emma Sincentaffar Baker: Martha married George Holland, son of Robert Holland, in 1862. George was born in Linn Co., Mo. Feb. 20, 1836. They lived on a farm near Laclede, Mo. for awhile.
The Hollands made their first trip to Texas in 1868. They had three small children then --- Janie, Henry and Lizzie. Edley Maxwell and family went with them. They had four children --- John, Frankie, Lucy and Betty.
It was July and very hot. They traveled in covered wagons and suffered terribly from the heat, especially going through Kansas which was dry and barren, water scarce and few houses. When they reached Calhoun, Henry Co., Mo, they stopped to visit the Mike Whitleys. Lutisha Whitley had recently married her cousin, Bill Maxwell, and they were living there, too.
Edley Maxwell did not like Texas. They soon returned and settled on a new farm in Bates Co., Mo. where they lived many years before they moved to Fort Scott, Kansas in their later years.
The Hollands came back to Missouri in July of 1871. They stopped to see Edley Maxwell in Bates Co., then the Mike Whitleys in Henry County. They found them very sad for Aunt Jane Whitley had just died on April 26, 1871. The Hollands came on to Linn Co. and bought a farm one-half mile north of the Bruner School House. two and one-half miles northeast of Laclede, Mo. They lived there four years. In l874 they sold their farm and went back to Texas. A railroad had been built and this time Martha and the children on the train. Dock Maxwell and his wife Georgia, who had been visiting from Texas, went with them.
George Holland drove through with a team and wagon. They lived in Texas and raised their family there near Denison. Later they moved near Durant, Indian Territory, and later to New Mexico.
Information on the Hollands is from Emma Sincentaffar Baker's book written in 1951. (Volume 2)
