_Recollections of An Old Man_, by Dr. David SULLINS Date:1910
From _Roots of Roane Co., TN_, 1981, by Snyder E. ROBERTS, pp. 167-69: "The major portion of the present town of Oliver Springs, Tennessee has been carved from a 5000-acre North Carolina grant to Stockley DONELSON in 1790. DONELSON sold the 5000 acres to Charles McCLUNG in 1796 who surveyed it and began to sub-divide it. . . . Nathan SULLINS, Sr., a Revolutionary War soldier, was one of the first of many to settle on this tract. "These early settlers, before and shortly after 1800 (when Kingston was struggling for a toe-hold), were attracted by the alluvial soil found along Poplar Creek which was very fertile and suitable for the growing of a variety of crops. The climate was temperate and rainfall plentiful. The abundance and variety of timber, wild fruit and nuts, and ready game were enticements. The beauty of the valley was enhanced by the view of the towering peaks of the Cumberland Mountains to the north. The early settlers searched for free-flowing, all-weather springs to serve their domestic needs, and sizeable branches with sufficient drop to power their grist mills. Shortly, the mineral wealth attracted their attention and drew a different type of settler. "Nathan SULLINS, Sr., was possibly the first, or he was among the very first, settler on Poplar Creek on the McCLUNG 5000-acre subdivision before 1800 when John ADAMS was still President and the area was still a part of Knox County. He settled on the south bank west of the Roane-Anderson line (near Johnson Bridge). Knox County Book F, Vol. 11, p. 114 shows that his first purchase was for 200 acres. He bought two additional tracts of 50 and 103 acres in 1799, and Roane Book B, p. 108 shows that SULLINS bought from Charles McCLUNG, 250 acres on Poplar Creek in 1804. Thus in 1804, he owned a total of 603 acres on Poplar Creek. "Although Nathan SULLINS, Sr.'s stay was of comparatively short duration and the SULLINS name has long vanished from the community, Oliver Springs can be justly proud to claim Nathan as one of its very first pioneers. No Nathan SULLINS, Sr., family history has been found and no extensive genealogical study has been made, but enough information exists in various records to give a general picture of Nathan and his descendants. "Nathan SULLINS, Sr., was a non-pension Rev. War soldier from Virginia. He was evidently married twice, first to a Miss MAYS, and secondly to Elizabeth FARMER, a widow, in Halifax County, Virginia, October 4, 1785. Records indicate that he was the father of ten children; most, or possibly all, of whom were by his first wife. The children were as follows: "1. Mary SULLINS (1769-1838) married (1790 in Halifax County, Virginia) William Henry FARMER (1769-1864). They were the parents of twelve children: a. Luke, b. Lucy, c. Rebecca (SHOEMAKER), d. Elizabeth (BREEDEN), e. Asby (JOHNSON), f. Nathan, g. Henry, h. Winnie Jane (SEIBER), i. William, j. Mary (SEIBER), k. Mossie (SHARP), and l. Wiley. Henry FARMER first settled on Clinch River before 1802 (present Carbide Park) and relocated about 1821 in Dutch Valley at the present Walker Long Cemetery. His descendants constitute a large and important family line in Anderson County. His son, Nathan, was a Captain in the Civil War. "2. Joseph SULLINS married (1796 in Washington County) Sarah "Molly" HOSKINS (1781- ) daughter of Jesse HOSKINS, Sr., who is the progenitor of practically all of the HOSKINS lines in Anderson County. Joseph SULLINS appears in Roane records as early as 1805 and disappears from the records about 1822. "3. Nathan SULLINS, Sr.'s, son of unknown name, who was probably "Zachariah" married (1789) Levina GRIFFITH. In 1805, Nathan, Sr., sold (B, p. 109) to Zachariah SULLINS 100 acres on Poplar Creek adjoining Amos Griffith. "4. Nathan's daughter, name unknown, married Joseph STUBBLEFIELD. "5. Patty SULLINS married (1799 in Knox) Josiah GENT. Josiah GENT was on the 1801 petition to form Roane County. He appears in Roane records until 1817. However, in a deed dated 1813 (F, p. 6), he is named as Josiah GENT of White County who was conveying to Lewis RECTOR 40 acres on Indian Creek in present Oliver Springs. He was probably the father of Josiah, Jr., Charlotte, and Senthy GENT listed in early Roane marriage records. "6. Richard SULLINS married (1799 in Knox) Agnes FARMER. "7. Aggy SULLINS married (1801 in Knox) Dr. William FARMER. "8. Winnie SULLINS married (1802 in Roane) John MITCHELL with James MITCHELL as bondsman. "9. Nathan SULLINS, Jr. "10. Josiah SULLINS was born 1770-75, and died in Roane County shortly after his will was made in 1847. The name of his first wife is unknown, but she was the mother of his children: James, David M., John B., and Nancy (LOWER). Josiah first appears in Roane records in 1808, and appears many times until his death. In 1810, he bought (E, p. 159) from Michael HASSLER 157 acres in Hen Valley on the western outskirts of present Oliver Springs. He bought and sold land in Roane and Morgan counties, and by the time of his death, he was quite wealthy. He married, secondly (1845) Catherine LOWER. Samuel BORUM and George GAMMON were the Executors of his large estate. ". . . Nathan SULLINS, Sr.'s, name appears in Roane petitions as early as 1801. In 1805, he sold 100 acres to Zachariah SULLINS, 80 acres to Amos GRIFFITH, and 136 acres to William GRIFFITH from his 603 acres. He may have conveyed land to his sons-in-law Josiah GENT and John WALKER who lived on nearby farms. In 1805, Nathan, Sr.'s, name disappears from Roane records which indicates his departure for parts unknown, or more likely his death date and burial on his old homeplace. "Although Nathan SULLINS, Sr., was among the first to employ the axe and the plow in the present Oliver Springs area, his fine family will probably be best remembered by their trademark, the Holy Bible, and their work in spreading the gospel by means of the Methodist Church."
There is NO DOCUMENTED LIST OF HIS CHILDREN'S NAMES.
The 1785 Halifax Co., VA, tax list of J. W. P. MARTIN indicates he had 11 whites in his household with 1 dwelling and 2 other buildings.
Findings and conclusions in 1980's and 1990's of Sam L. SULLINS, Jr., Huntsville, AL: 1. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) can be found in Halifax County, Virginia, records in the 1760's, 1770's, 1780's, and 1790's; in Knox County (now Roane County) Tennessee in the 1790's and 1800's. 2. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) can be found in the 1782 and 1785 Halifax County tax lists which show the size of his household. 3. Land sales in Halifax County, Virginia, identify Nathan SULLINS' wife as Winefred; her last name is not known, but it has been assumed to be MAYS to meet David SULLINS' statement that his grandmother was a Miss MAYS. 4. Based on 1782 and 1785 Halifax County, Virginia, tax list, Nathan SULLINS(ENS) had about eleven persons including children in his home. 5. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) wife Winefred apparently died sometime prior to 1785 as he married Mrs. Elizabeth FARMER in 1785. 6. An interesting fact shows up in Halifax County, Virginia, marriage records in 1792. A Mrs. Elizabeth FARMER married Benjamin DIXON; this marriage is not understood. 7. A Mrs. Elizabeth FARMER is listed on the 1782 tax list of Halifax County, Virginia, with six persons in her family. Several FARMER and SULLINS(ENS) children intermarried. 8. Federal census records of Halifax County, Virginia, or Roane County, Tennessee, show no Nathan SULLINS(ENS) prior to 1830. 9. Some nine children are shown in the Nathan SULLINS(ENS) household in the 1785 Halifax County, Virginia, tax list. Mr. Snyder ROBERTS in his book _Roots of Roane County_, identifies twelve; this writer knows of at least two others who were not identified. 10. Only three of Nathan SULLINS(ENS) children are definitely identified; several others are by association. On the other hand, at least four or five others are not. 11. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) and Henry FARMER sold 135 acres in Halifax County, Virginia, in 1796, apparently to sell out prior to leaving. 12. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) and wife Elizabeth sold 250 acres in Halifax County, Virginia, in 1797, apparently to sell out prior to leaving. 13. Nathan SULLINS(ENS) started purchasing land in Knox County (now Roane County), Tennessee, in 1798 and 1799. 14. A Nathan SULLINS(ENS) was assigned to the first jury of Roane County, Tennessee, in 1802. 15. Nathan SULLINS(ENS), Jr., married Rebecca MITCHELL in 1804. 16. A Nathan SULLINS(ENS) and a Joseph SULLINS(ENS) are listed on Roane County, Tennessee, tax list in 1805. 17. No will has been found for Nathan SULLINS(ENS). In marriage records for Pittsylvania County, Virginia, it shows marriage date as 2 Oct 1785, which is probably the date the license was applied for.
From Halifax Co., VA, Mortgage Book 6, p. 179-81, 31 July 1766, records: "Confirmed and by those present doth grant Bargain sell & lien release and confirm unto these Thomas YUILLE James MURDOCK & Company their heirs and assignes forever one certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred Acres more or less lying and being on Mirey Creek in Halifax County being the same land which the said Nathan SULLINS had from his father Richard SULLINS which land the said Richard SULLINS purchased of Joseph SPRADLIN To have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land."

In 1764, 1765, 1768, and 1769 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, election poll lists; his name was recorded as "Nathaniel" in 1765 and 1768.
In 1771 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, List of Tithables taken by Jas. TURNER Jr.

Info from letter of "Nathan and Rebecca SULLINS" of Athens, Tenn., dated "Apr. 19 1848."
From _Roots of Roane Co., TN_, 1981, by Snyder E. ROBERTS, pp. 168-69: "Nathan SULLINS, Jr., (1783 in Halifax Co., Va. - 1857 in Athens, Tenn.) married (1804 in Blount County) Rebecca MITCHELL (1789 in Knox - 1856 at Athens) who was the daughter of Morris MITCHELL, a well-known Methodist minister. The 'Athens Post' in 1856 said that Nathan, Jr., was brought to the Oliver Springs area by his parents when we was 12 years of age, or in 1795, but this date should be revised to 1798, or 99 on the basis of . . . deeds, etc. Nathan, Jr., married in Blount County, operated a ferry, and farmed. When the Hiwassee District was cleared on Indian title by treaty, he moved there. By 1825, he had settled in a large log house in McMinn County two miles west of Athens. Nathan and Rebecca had thirteen children: "a. Timothy (1812-1885) was born in Blount County. He started his career as a Methodist minister at the age of 21 years. He was of a robust build and a fine speaker. He suffered a stroke in 1846. Timothy married Mary W. ROGERS, a school teacher, in 1858. He was held as a Federal prisoner during the Civil War. Timothy helped to establish Emory and Henry College. He died in 1885, and is buried in Gray Cemetery in Knoxville. "b. Mary L. SULLINS married (1838) Dr. Alexander WOODWARD and lived in Knoxville. "c. Hazy SULLINS married James Henry CALDWELL of Abingdon, Virginia. "d. Morris Clark SULLINS was a Methodist minister. He served as a trustee of Tennessee Wesleyan College. He was a paralytic for over 40 years. "e. John SULLINS. "f. Rebecca L. SULLINS married (1849) Lazarus DODSON of McMinn County. "g. Nathan Asbury SULLINS is buried in Lynchburg. "h. David SULLINS (1827- ) married (1855) Ann Rebecca BLAIR. He was born and reared in Athens, Tennessee, and he became one of the best known Methodist ministers in East Tennessee. He was instrumental in the establishement of SULLINS College at Bristol which bore his name. David was a skilled writer. In his book _Recollections of an Old Man - 1827-1897_, he tells of many of his ministerial experiences. He describes the 'camp meetings' that prevailed during his time. Great details are given in respect to participating denominations and the size of crowds. He called them 'great religious rallies,' and described the 'shed' built at Cedar Springs in McMinn County by his father as being 125 feet long and 75 feet wide with wings on hinges. When the wings were down, it was a tent, and when the wings were up it would seat 2,000 persons. "i. Stephen Bradford SULLINS. "j. James Axley SULLINS. "k. Annis M. SULLINS. "l.
