Like Hugh Ross Rodgers, Jacob Perry Merrill was a l s o a P O W at Camp Douglas, Illinois. He survived, however, and returned hom e t o h i s f amily in Covington Co., AL. Ron Head was told by his great-grandmother, S u s a n na Melinda (MERRILL) CAMPBELL, of how she and her mother were sitting on t h e p o r ch of their home near Dozier when a man Susanna did not recognize came w a l k i ng up the road to their home. Her mother yelled and jumped up to run a n d m e e t him, which frightened Susanna. It was her father, coming home f r o m t h e war, but she did not recognize him because she had been so young whe n h e w e n t away.
