Patrick Henry Sellers was the only child of DANIEL SELLERS and NANCY ELIZABETH SPARROW SELLERS. His father died either before or very soon after he was born. His mother, Nancy Elizabeth, married again to John J. Howell, evidently of the Sparrow Springs community, east of Kings Mountain, NC. For some unknown reason, Patrick Henry was raised, from some early time of his life, by one of the Mauney families in the Kings Mountain area. Just what the circumstances were, accounting for his not having been kept by his mother, Nancy Elizabeth, after her marriage to Howell, I have never heard mentioned. The Mauney name is prominent in and around Kings Mountain.

At some point in his early life he began work as a telegraph operator with the Southern Railroad, very likely in Kings Mountain. He remained with the Southern, and at times the Seaboard Railway, in varying capacities all his life.

During his career with the railroads, the family moved a number of times, and lived for varying periods in Atlanta, GA; Athens, GA; Central, SC; Greenville, SC; and Easley, SC. I do not know where their married life began.

The 'Nelse Holcome house' was "occupied by P.H. 'Pat' Sellers, an executive in the railway operating department from Atlanta after 1899." (West of the space where Holcombe's Store was on Pendleton Street, Easley, SC)

"And quiet little Aunt Fay - I remember when she died '57, I think (actually 1960), and were at Ceasar's Head while Bubba (Dorothy Hagood Grantham) and Daddy (George Leighton Grantham) were away. She was living at the Easley Hotel and just woke up dead one day. Her door was locked and they had to climb in the window to find her. Mama gave me a couple of her old scarves and some jewelry. I know a pin was stolen when I was robbed, but think I still have a silver bracelet. You know, she was the secretary to old Mr. McKissick at Alice (Mill) and was apparently quite the guardian of the inner sanctum for him, and was a good keeper of secrets. And she played the piano at the church. I don't have too many recollections, but share them when they hit."

I have found nothing on the McLaughen line earlier than Robert Jerome McLaughen, father of Lula Alice McLaughen who married Patrick Henry Sellers. Presumably the "Mc" indicates Scotch origin. Some of the family connections are in Kings Mountain and Gastonia, NC, but know almost nothing back of tow or three generations from today. There is indication that our line may have been in Tennessee (Greeneville, Greene County) before coming to Gaston County, N.C., and Toccoa, GA.

Robert Jerome McLaughen had a brother, George, who lived in Toccoa. Some of George's descendants now live in Gastonia, but know nothing of generations before George except that "they came from over in Tennessee, around Greeneville".

Greene County, Tennessee, records show a grant of 20 acres of land to Nancy McClaughen, October 5, 1815. On October 9, 1824, Jane McCloughen, as one of the heirs of Nancy, deeds her interest in this 20 acres to James McCloughen, evidently McClaughen sells his house an lot in the town of Greeneville. This James McClaughen was of na age to have been the father of Robert Jerome and George McLaughen, but the connection has not been proved. (A further search of Tennessee records may provide more information).

Robert Jerome McLaughen was in the Civil War according to microfilm records in the South Carolina Archives, in Co. E, 16 Battalion (Neal's) Tennessee Cavalry.

General Notes (Wife)

Apparently she and her first husband lived in Kings Mountain, NC. Nothing is known about Moore or Jarrett. It is believed that she lived in Toccoa, GA, while married to Jarrett. She had been a widow for sometime prior to her death in 1922.

The following is an account of her death, carried on the front page of "The Kings Mountain Herald", December 28, 1922:

"Mrs. M.E. Jarrett died at her apartment at the home of Mrs. T.P. McGill at 2:30 Wednesday morning after suffering with double pneumonia for several days. While her condition was critical, she rallied Tuesday and it was thought that she stood a good chance for recovery. Her son, Judge McLaughen, left on 35 for Toccoa, GA, to attend to some pressing business, expecting to return Wednesday. She was dead by the time he reached Toccoa. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Alice Sellers, of Greenville, S.C.

Deceased was 74 years old, and a member of the Methodist Church. She was a native of Gaston County, her maiden named being Summit. She was twice married, first to a McLaughen, and then to a Jarrett.

At this writing, it is expected that the funeral will be conducted and interment made in Mountain Rest cemetery. Both her children were with her during her sickness, also her granddaughter, Miss Eleanor Gambrell."

The above newspaper account appears to be wrong as to the place of her birth and that she was married twice. The letter below from "Aunt Sue" (see under Lawson Summit) states more reliably that she was born in Abbeville County, SC. although there is no proof, I am inclined to believe she was married three times.

The newspaper account, giving her age as 74 in 1922, is the only record I have seen that would indicate when she was born - about 1848. Evidently she was buried next to her father and mother Summit in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC, but her grave is not marked.
