Notes (Marriage)
Ephraim Mikell Clark and wife, Susan Jane Bailey lived on James Island, just across the Ashley River from the Battery of Charleston, SC, and later at "Ocean View" plantation. Ephraim Mikell Clark was a planter. The main crop on his plantation was Sea Island cotton. For many years he shipped all his cotton to France. It was used in lace making; his Sea Island cotton had a very long and silky staple or fiber. At the Paris (France) Exposition in 1876, he won the first grand prize on his cotton exhibit. W.A. Clark, his son, said that his father got from $1.25 to $1.50 per pound for his cotton. Source: Webber notes Ephraim Mikell Clark and Susan Jane Bailey had a total of 14 children.
