The following is from a Dent Co, MO newspaper obituary, shortly after the death of Asa Hardison Bain on 9 Oct 1899:
<b>An Old Citizen Dead</b>
Asa H. Bain died at his home in current township about one o'clock last Monday morning of pneumonia fever, after an illness of only 5 days duration. Mr. Bain was born in Maury County, Tennessee August 1, 1841, and came to Dent County with his parents at an early age. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in July, 1861, in Company 'D' 10th Missouri Infantry and was paroled in June, 1865. He was in the noted battles in Springfield, MO., Prairie Grove, and Helena, Arkansas. He was twice wounded at Helena.
On the 7th of Oct, 1875 he was married to Miss Mary M. Craig, daughter of Judge James E. and Edith Craig of current township. He was always a Democrat in politics and took an active interest in public affairs. He will be missed in this County as well as in the Community where he lived so long. Mrs. Bain and five children are left to mourn with his many friends.

BIO: Per Civil Order Book C - Oct 1821 to July 1825: "Alexander PARK, an alien in order to become a citizen of the United...comes into court...Signatures: Thos. RHOADS, Wm. RHOADS, Paul DAVIS. (copy owned by Park W. CARTER.) Per MARRIAGE RECORD BOOK (copy owned by Park W. Carter): Married 20 June 1839. Alexander PARK and Elizabeth N. BAIN. Given unto my hand this 5th day of July 1839...James M.HENDERSON. The joint ownership of a parcel of land in Hanover Township of Alexander and Elizabeth (BAIN) PARK and Thomas and Jane (BAIRD) ANDERSON was the first piece of evidence found by compiler to link the PARK, ANDERSON and GILCHRIST families. From this discovery came more and more evidence that the families were related in some way. Church records, tombstones in Carmel Cemetery and naturalization records all contributed to the knowledge that all of these families emigrated from the southern part of SCOTLAND, and most were in this country considerably earlier than James GILCHRIST. The PARK family was evidently rather prominent in the Hanover and Saluda Township area and Alexander and his family remained there for many years. Finally at least three of Alexander and Jane's children relocated to Vermilion County, IL. Tombstone inscriptions photographed and copied by Park W. CARTER, a descendent of Alexander's brother, Thomas, give birth and death dates of William J. and his wife Jane (BAIRD), Elizabeth and her husband Thomas J. HANNA, and Jane, the PARK's daughter who was reportedly blind and never married. All of these members of Alexander's immediate family are buried in the Floral Hills Cemetery near Hoopeston, IL. All died after 1900.

BIO: The parents of Elizabeth BAIN are not known. Compiler at one time had assumed the father to have been Samuel BAIN of Jefferson Co., IN, who is enumerated on census records near the Park families; however, Elizabeth consistently reported herself to have been born in INDIANA. In 1870, she reported that her father was "foreign born." Samuel BAIN reports himself to have been born in NORTH CAROLINA; therefore compiler has deleted the names of Samuel and Jane BAIN as parents of Elizabeth. The second son of Alexander and Elizabeth PARK served in the Union Army during the C.W., and died as a result of illness contracted during his service. Civil War Pension File #914-826 contains a copy of Samuel's death certificate which states that both Alexander PARK and Elizabeth "BAYNE" were born in SCOTLAND! At least three of Alexander and Elizabeth's children eventually resided and after 1900 all three died in Vermilion County, IL. Daughter Elizabeth HANNA and her husband Thomas J. Hanna, William J. and his wife Jane BAIRD/BEARD and the PARK's blind daughter, Jane. who never married are buried in Floral Hills Cemetery near Hoopeston, IL.

At least two of William's siblings also moved to the Hoopeston area; Elizabeth , William's sister, and her husband Thomas J. HANNA are both buried in the Floral Hills Cemetery. Another sister, Jane PARK, was apparently blind and never married. Her grave is also in Floral Hills. Her tombstone inscription was copied by Park W. CARTER, and contains the information that Jane was born 3 Feb. 1844 and died on Christmas Day, 1915. Park reports that she was known by family in the area as "Blind Jane" and "Aunt Blind Jane." William J. and Jane PARK had two children listed on the 1870 Census in Jefferson County; Joseph was 3 years of age, and Nettie was two. Ms. McGREW, however, sent Park CARTER the list of their children as follows: Joseph, Fred, Ralph, Anna, Mary and Salome. No dates of birth were included in her letter. It is not known if "Nettie" who appeared on the 1870 Census died young, or why her name did not appear on Ms. McGREW's data.
