General Notes (Husband)
Christopher Todd, was born at Pontefract, West Riding , Y o r k shire, England, baptized Jan. 12, 1617, died Apri l 2 3 , 16 86 , at New Haven, Conn., married Grace, daughte r o f M ichae l M iddlebrook, of "Hold Mills" Yorkshire, En glan d. He was barely twenty years of age, when he and his yo u n g b r ide sailed with Mr. Davenports company on the Hec to r , pro ba bly sometime in April 1637. Two months was pe rha ps , th e ave rage time consumed in sailing from Londo n t o Bos ton i n vess els of that day. The Hector arrive d in B osto n on th e 26th o f June 1637. The immigrants re ceive d a war mer welc ome tha n ordinary. The eminence o f "the f amous Mr . Davenpo rt" an d the opulence of the me rchants w ho accomp ained him , gave t o this company, in t he estimat ion of th e colonists , an unus ual value. Mos t of the comp any remain ed in Bosto n or the vi cinity dur ing the follow ing winter , many of the m having fou nd emp loyment suitabl e to thei r several vocati ons. Though s om ewhat scattered , some find ing lodgings an d employmen t i n one place an d some in anot her, they were s till a n organiz ed company. On the 30th of March, the leader of the company an d m o s t o f the followers embarked at Boston, having form all y d ec ide d to fix their plantation at "Quinnipiac" o n lon g Is lan d So und. After a tedious voyage of "abou t a fortn igh t the y arri ved at their desired port." It was perhaps, a peculiarity of New Haven, that cell a r s w e re used for temporary habitations. They were, a s t h e nam e s uggests, partially under ground and perhaps , i n m ost ca se s on a hill side. On the Sabbath, they wo rshi ppe d unde r a n oak tree, near the landing place: an d Mr . Dave nport , i n a sermon on Matthew IV, I, "insiste d o n the tem ptatio n o f the wilderness, made such observ atio ns, and ga ve suc h dir ections and exhortations, as w ere p ertinent t o the pr esen t condition of his hearers." The English, soon after their arrival at Quinnipiac, ob s e r v ed a day of extraordinary humiliation, when they fo r m e d a s ocial compact, mutually promising "that as in m at te r s tha t contain the gathering and ordering of a chu rc h , s o likewi se, in all public offices, which concer n civ i l ord er, as ch oice of magistrates, and officers m akin g an d repe aling of l aws, dividing allotments of inh erita nce , and al l things o f a like nature," they woul d all o f the m be orde red by thos e rules which the scrip ture hol ds for th. For mo re than a ye ar, they had no oth er civi l or eccl esiastica l organizatio n for the transac tion o f business a nd, if w e may judge of t hat year by t he year s that follow ed, ther e were penalties i nflicte d on evil- doers; but i f any indiv iduals were authori ze d to act a s magistrates , the record o f their appointme n t has not b een discovered. The plantation covenant, like the compact signed in t h e c a b in of the Mayflower, was a provisional arrangeme n t of m e n , who finding themselves beyond the actual jur is dicti o n o f any earthly government, attempted to gover n t hemsel ve s ac cording to the law of God. The electiv e fran chise w a s limit ed to church members. At first, Christopher Todd seems to have been one o f t h e l e ss prominent of the colonists. He signed the "G ener a l Agr ee ment" modestly, with his mark and quietly t ook h i s allot men t in the "Yorkshire Quarter," and whe n the me et ing hous e wa s "dignified," he had his place a ssigned h im , not in o ne o f the honorable "Middle seats, " but in " th e third seat e o n the side," though "Siste r Tod"--for t he y worshipped i n th ose days, "the men apa rt and their w ive s apart"--wa s a litt le more fortunate , had one of th e mor e honorable " Middle se ates." It wa s not long howeve r, bef ore Christophe r Todd beg an to ma ke another kind o f mark . He bought a gri st mill, wh ic h was the first mil l erecte d by the town of N ew Haven, " a t the falls over t he trap d yke at the east en d of Mil l Rock , two miles fro m the cent er of the town." Th is wa s at first , hired an d then bough t of the town, befor e t he year 1686 . This mi ll stood on o r near where Whitney ' s Gun factory no w stan ds and was lon g known as Todd' s mill , and after 179 8 pas sed into the po ssession of El i Whitney , who erected th er e, the first est ablishment i n America fo r manufacturin g f ire arms. The r ecords o f the "General Co urt," show t hat h e was "continua lly ad ding to his real est ate." He e ven ros e to the digni ty o f a "Viewer of fences. " In 165 0, he boug ht of Jaspe r C rane, an acre and a hal f in th e "London Quart er" wit h t he buildings thereon. Ther e h e passed the remaini ng ye a rs of his life. This lot, whi c h was on Elm street, be tw e en Church and Orange streets r e mained in the possessi o n o f he and his descendants fo r nea rly a hundred years . I t w as later known as the "Blu e Meeti ng house Lot," o n accou n t of the interior of th e building , which the "N ew Light s " erected upon it, bein g decorate d in that col or. St. Th oma s's Church now stand s on a par t of it. Mr . Todd wa s a farm er, miller and ba ker and acqu ired cons iderable pr operty, so me of his lan d being remot e from h is residence . He lived t o be a lit tle over sixty- nin e years of age , having died i n April 1 686, leaving a w i ll which is a mo del for sense an d wisdo m, and may be s ee n in the Probat e records at New Hav en , Ct.
