RUTLEDGE, Edward (brother of John Rutledge), a Delegate fr om South Carolina; born in Christ Church Parish, S.C., Nove mber 23, 1749; completed preparatory studies; studied law a t the Middle Temple in London; returned to South Carolina ; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in 1773; M ember of the Continental Congress 1774-1777; a signer of th e Declaration of Independence; was a delegate to the firs t provincial congress in 1775 and to the second provincia l congress 1775-1776; appointed a member of the first boar d of war in June 1776; member of the general assembly in 17 78; elected a Member of the Continental Congress in 1779 bu t did not take his seat; captain in the Charleston Battalio n of Artillery in the Militia of South Carolina in the Revo lution; taken prisoner when the British captured Charlesto n May 12, 1780, imprisoned at St. Augustine until July 1781 , when he was exchanged; member of the State house of repre sentatives in 1782, 1786, 1788, and 1792; member of the Sta te constitutional convention in 1790 and was author of th e act abolishing the law of primogeniture in 1791; presiden tial elector in 1796 and voted for Thomas Jefferson, of Vir ginia, and Thomas Pinckney, of South Carolina; was tendere d the appointment of Associate Justice of the United State s Supreme Court in 1794 by President Washington, but did no t accept; elected Governor of South Carolina and served fro m December 6, 1798, until his death in Charleston, S.C., J anuary 23, 1800; interment in St. Philip's Churchyard. MIDDLETON, Henry (Father of Arthur Middleton and of Thoma s Middleton; grandfather of Henry Middleton, 1770-1846; g reat-grandfather of John Izard Middleton) Member of Legisla tive Council,Born in 1717, probably at "the Oaks" plantatio n on the Ashley River near Charleston, the son of Arthur Mi ddleton of "The Oaks" and Sarah Amory. Educated at home an d in England. Planter, of "The Oaks" plantation and of Barb ados. Married, first, Mary Williams, in 1741; second, Mari a Henrietta Bull; third, Lady Mary Mackenzie, widow of Joh n Ainslie, January 18, 1776. Acquired "Middleton Place" thr ough his first wife; laid out worId-famous gardens there; o wned almost 20 plantations, 50, 000 acres, 800 slaves. Cred ited with raising and supporting an entire regiment to figh t in the Revolutionary War. Died June 13, 1784 in Charlesto n; buried behind the chancel of St. James' Parish Church, B erkeley.

Born July 26, 1753, the son of Henry Middleton of "Middelto n Place" and 'The Oaks and Mary Williams. Educated in Engl and; returned to South Carolina in 1174. Married Anne Manig ault April 8, 1783. During Revolutionary War, appointed lie utenant in Berkeley Regiment in December, 1775. Planter o f Prince William's Parish. Member of House of Commons. Memb er of First and Second Provincial Congresses, 1775-78. Duri ng Revolutionary War, aided American cause by guaranteein g paper currency. First General Assembly, St. James', Goos e Creek, 1776. S. C. House of Representatives (declined el ection from St. James', Goose Creek, in 1782), Prince Willi am's, 1784-86. S. C. Senate, Prince William's, 1787-88, 178 9-90. Experimented in reclaiming marshes for grain crops i n the Dutch manner; this and ruins of war impaired large es tate received from his father. Member of Episcopal Church. Died August 19 , 1797, at Sullivans Island; buried in St. James' Goose Cre ek, Churchyard.
