BIO: This couple's surname was nearly unreadable on the 1900 census film. Compiler had originally copied it as Millie/Miller. Daughter's marriage record indicates MILLER is correct. Per the 1900 census, John is 71 years of age; he was born in OHIO, but both of his parents were born in GERMANY; he and "Eleinor" have been married 44 or 49 years. His wife reports that she has given birth to 9 children, but only 6 are still living. Since both John and his wife say they were born in OHIO, compiler assumes they were probably married in OHIO, too.

BIO: The name of this "mother-in-law" of head of the household, James GILCHRIST, is extremely difficult to read on the census film. It actually appears to be "MILLIE, Eleinor." Her maiden name is unknown. Other data given on the census is that she is 72 years of age; married, but the number of years married could be 44 or 49; she is reported to have given birth to 9 children, but only 6 are living at census enumeration time in 1900. She gives her own birth place as OHIO, her father's as GERMANY (as does her husband), and her mother's place of birth as MARYLAND.

BIO: GILCHRIST family stories tell of James K. GILCHRIST leaving the family home in Fulton Co., IN to relocate in the Zanesville OH area to join a bridge construction project sometime after the 1880 census. The family reports were that James had settled in OHIO, met and married "a widow woman who had a young daughter." The only name James's nephews could remember for this new wife of James's was "Aunt Beecy." Neither of them knew her real name, but they reported that the daughter's name was "Cecil" and that James and "Aunt Beecy" later had a son named "Clyde." (Compiler remembers Clyde GILCHRIST and his sister Cecil visiting our home many years ago.) Compiler attempted to locate documentation for this marriage, for the birth and the deaths of the James GILCHRIST family in OHIO by writing to the Probate Court in Muskingum County, OH and to the Division of Vital Statistics for the State of OHIO. Letters sent to these agencies in 1990 failed to provide the desired documents. The Court of Common Pleas-Probate Division in Muskingum Co. did conduct a search of birth records for Clyde and of Marriage Records from 1881-1899 and from 1928-1940 (for Cecil), but found nothing. 1900 Census Records revealed "Aunt Beecy" to be "Theresa" rather than "Beatrice" as compiler had assumed. In 1900, there was a child, Ralph, in the home that the nephews had never known about. There were also a nephew, "Hugh MENDENHALL," and John and "Elienor" MILLER (census very hard to read), who were categorized as "mother-in-law" and "father-in-law." The "nephew" was probably a child of one of Theresa GILCHRIST's siblings, and not really James's nephew. Contact with a volunteer from the Muskingum Co. Historical Soc. in Sept. 1995, provided documentation for the marriage of James and Theresa (MILLER), as well as the later marriage of Theresa to Howard PAINTER. This same source provided the burial data for James GILCHRIST in the Granger Cem., in Muskingum Township. Theresa's name, and "wife of James GILCHRIST" is included in the inscription, but there is no date of death for her. It is not known at this time whether Theresa was buried in the GILCHRIST plot or elsewhere (possibly with her second husband.) Along with James's grave in Granger Cem. are the graves of not only the child, Ralph, but also that of another child named "Letha" who was born in 1902 and died in 1903. Compiler has not found the burial place of the GILCHRIST's son Clyde, but he is believed to have been living as late as 1970. Death records for Cecile (Cecil) PAINTER, Theresa's daughter, state that she was born in 1886. Her death certificate gives her father's name as James K. GILCHRIST, yet she would have been born 3 years before James and Theresa were married. Compiler suspects that Theresa was unmarried at the time of Cecil's birth, and that James either legally adopted Cecil or that she simply grew up using the GILCHRIST name as her own.
