Info from Sam SULLINS, Jr, Huntsville, AL. Date:17 JUL 1990
Info from letter of "Nathan and Rebecca SULLINS" of Athens, Tenn., dated "Apr. 19 1848."
From _Roots of Roane Co., TN_, 1981, by Snyder E. ROBERTS, pp. 168-69: "Nathan SULLINS, Jr., (1783 in Halifax Co., Va. - 1857 in Athens, Tenn.) married (1804 in Blount County) Rebecca MITCHELL (1789 in Knox - 1856 at Athens) who was the daughter of Morris MITCHELL, a well-known Methodist minister. The 'Athens Post' in 1856 said that Nathan, Jr., was brought to the Oliver Springs area by his parents when we was 12 years of age, or in 1795, but this date should be revised to 1798, or 99 on the basis of . . . deeds, etc. Nathan, Jr., married in Blount County, operated a ferry, and farmed. When the Hiwassee District was cleared on Indian title by treaty, he moved there. By 1825, he had settled in a large log house in McMinn County two miles west of Athens. Nathan and Rebecca had thirteen children: "a. Timothy (1812-1885) was born in Blount County. He started his career as a Methodist minister at the age of 21 years. He was of a robust build and a fine speaker. He suffered a stroke in 1846. Timothy married Mary W. ROGERS, a school teacher, in 1858. He was held as a Federal prisoner during the Civil War. Timothy helped to establish Emory and Henry College. He died in 1885, and is buried in Gray Cemetery in Knoxville. "b. Mary L. SULLINS married (1838) Dr. Alexander WOODWARD and lived in Knoxville. "c. Hazy SULLINS married James Henry CALDWELL of Abingdon, Virginia. "d. Morris Clark SULLINS was a Methodist minister. He served as a trustee of Tennessee Wesleyan College. He was a paralytic for over 40 years. "e. John SULLINS. "f. Rebecca L. SULLINS married (1849) Lazarus DODSON of McMinn County. "g. Nathan Asbury SULLINS is buried in Lynchburg. "h. David SULLINS (1827- ) married (1855) Ann Rebecca BLAIR. He was born and reared in Athens, Tennessee, and he became one of the best known Methodist ministers in East Tennessee. He was instrumental in the establishement of SULLINS College at Bristol which bore his name. David was a skilled writer. In his book _Recollections of an Old Man - 1827-1897_, he tells of many of his ministerial experiences. He describes the 'camp meetings' that prevailed during his time. Great details are given in respect to participating denominations and the size of crowds. He called them 'great religious rallies,' and described the 'shed' built at Cedar Springs in McMinn County by his father as being 125 feet long and 75 feet wide with wings on hinges. When the wings were down, it was a tent, and when the wings were up it would seat 2,000 persons. "i. Stephen Bradford SULLINS. "j. James Axley SULLINS. "k. Annis M. SULLINS. "l. Elizabeth Myra SULLINS.

In 1861 he served as Chaplain of the 19th Tennessee Infantry, CSA.
From _Notable Men of Tennessee_, (Southern Historical Association, Atlanta, Georgia, 1905), Judge John Allison, editor, Vol. I, p. 319: "David SULLINS, D. D., for a number of years president of Centenary Female College, Cleveland, Tennessee, was born in McMinn County, Tennessee, July 28, 1827. His parents were Nathan and Rebecca (MITCHELL) SULLINS, the former a native of Virginia, who came in his youth with his parents to Tennessee, and the latter the daughter of Rev. Morris MITCHELL, one of the pioneer Methodist ministers of East Tennessee. They were married in Knox County, and soon afterward removed to McMinn County, where Nathan SULLINS became a prosperous farmer and stock raiser. It was upon this farm that David was born and that his early life was passed. After the ordinary common school education, he attended Forest Hill Academy, near Athens, for a year, and in 1850 graduated from Emory and Henry College. The same year he joined the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and soon became active in promoting the work of his chosen denomination. In 1853 he became president of the Odd Fellows' Female College, at Jonesboro, Tennessee, a position which he held for five years. During the next two years he was engaged in the work of the ministry, at Chattanooga and Knoxville. When the Nineteenth Tennessee, Confederate Infantry, was organized, he was made chaplain and later became the chaplain of Breckenridge's Division. After the war, he was elected president of Wytheville Virginia Female College, which office he continued to administer for three years, when he removed to Bristol, Tennessee, and founded Sullins College, remaining at the head of the institution until 1880, when he was elected president of Emory and Henry College. In 1885 he was persuaded to take the presidency of the Centenary Female College, at Cleveland, and during the years of his administration the institution prospered, new buildings were erected at a cost of many thousands of dollars, and the attendance made a most satisfactory growth. In 1855 he was married to Ann Rebecca, daughter of John BLAIR, of Jonesboro, Tennessee, and their two sons and two daughters are all college graduates and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church."
In a letter to R. N. PRICE, Dr. David SULLINS wrote: "I remember, while yet a boy, to have heard my father tell, with respect to his family; that somewhere near 1750 his father and two brothers came from 'the old country' to America. These brothers were Scotch-Irish and all unmarried. In the course of events, one married and settled in Penn: another went to N.C. and married and settled near Gilford C.H.; the third came to Va., married a Miss MAYS and settled on the Dan River. This was my grandfather. Here my father, Nathan SULLINS, was born and lived till he was twelve years old. He then came with his father's family to Tenn. and located on Poplar Creek, in what was then Knox County, now Roane Co., near Oliver Springs. This was about the time Tenn. was admitted into the Union, 1796. . . . Of the other two brothers of my grandfather SULLINS, I know but little. The one who settled in Penn., married but left only one child; a daughter, who married but died childless, in the city of Philadelphia, Penn. The other brother who went to N.C. married and had a good large family. One of his sons, Napoleon, came to see us, when I was a boy. Another son went to Ky. many year ago, and brought up a family. Of this Ky. family, I have known something. Some of the descendants are still there, with whom I have had correspondence. One of the sons went to Mo. and is now a member of the Mo. Conference M.E.C. South. Another son of the N.C. family, Richard, came to upper East Tenn. and located in Sulivan county. His daughters married there and some of their descendants are still there about. Moses CHILDRESS of Bristol, is one of these. Of my father's brothers and sisters: my father had but one brother and three or four sisters. His brother, Joseph, I remember to have seen once. He married, I think, and lived and died near Oliver Springs, leaving no children. One of the sisters married Dr. Wm. FARMER. Some of their children are still about Clinton, Tenn. Another sister married Wm. GENT, who with his family went west many years ago. There were two sons, I know William and Nathan, named after their father and mine. The third sister married Joseph STUBBLEFIELD. To them were born several children - two sons and several daughters. The sons were Rolly and Wyatt. Rolly married twice, but left no children as far as I know. Wyatt married Ada THOMPSON, and reared a large family, most of who still live in and about Morristown, Tenn. Dr. J.A. STUBBLEFIELD, Junior pres. of Centenary College, is a son."

In _Recollections of an Old Man, Seventy Years in Dixie, 1827-1897_, pub. 1910, King Printing Co., Bristol, TN, Dr. David SULLINS wrote on pp. 14-15: "My ancestors were Scotch-Irish. I remember while yet a boy to have heard my father tell that somewhere about 1750 his father and two brothers came from νthe old country' to America. These brothers were Scotch-Irish, and all unmarried. They separated after they arrived in this country. One stopped in Pennsylvania, and married there; one went to North Carolina, married, and located near Guilford Courthouse; the third came to Virginia, married a Miss MAYS in Halifax County, and settled on Dan River. This was my grandfather. Here my father was born. When he was twelve years old, his father came, among the first pioneers, to Tennessee, settled on Poplar Creek, in Knox (now Roane) County, near Oliver Springs, in 1795. Here my father grew up to manhood in the wilderness of the new country. He had one brother (Joseph) and three sisters. These sisters married Dr. William FARMER, Joseph STUBBLEFIELD and William GENT. Some of the descendants of these families are still here in East Tennessee. Rev. Joseph A. STUBBLEFIELD, D.D., who for many years was President of Centenary Female College, is a grandson of the STUBBLEFIELD who married my paternal aunt."
