BIO: John Alexander was born 1816 near Mocksville, NC. He moved with his parents, Peter and Mollie, in 1821 to Mock's Mill, VA, later to be called Damascus, VA. He married Margaret Widener, daughter of Joel Widener of PA in 1834. He was a farmer and blacksmith by trade. They lived for a time on the banks of the Laurel River in Rapphannock County, VA. They then moved to NC where several Mock families lived. John Alexander and wife decided to follow the trail about 1839. The exact route is not known, but the famed "Wilderness Trail" may have guided them through the mountains to the west. No doubt they joined a caravan for travel was dangerous because of poor roads and Indians. A family great grandmother told the story this way: They started out in a covered as was the mode of travel at that time. They had two horses, a two year old colt and an older horse which had a habit of balking. The wagon was so full that the husband rode one of the horses. Sarah Margaret, four years old, rode in the wagon and held her one year old brother, Peter. The wife, Margaret, said that she and Peter walked most of the way. Peter is thought to be John Alexander's brother. They came through the Cumberland Gap and probably stopped in Damascus to visit his father and uncle. Cumberland Gap is where the great grandmother telling the story saw her first cook stove. They had always used fireplaces. They first came to Tennessee. Sullivan County has been mentioned, but early records burned with the court hoiuse. It must have been in the mountains for grandmother often said it was the most beautiful country in the world but one could starve to death there. They must have lived there for several years for the 1850 census shows four, maybe five of their children born there from 1840 to 1849. They moved on through KY to Johnson County, IN near Greenwood. Here they lived on a farm and fared better. John and Margaret moved later to Elwood, IN and bought a 50 acre farm northeast of town where they prospered. John and Margaret Mock are buried in a well kept country cemetery on a hill near Forestville, IN, which is a small village near Rigdon, IN.

BIO: SUSAN WRIGHT DIES AT SOUTHPORT Came to Indiana fron Tennessee in covered wagon--six children survive
Greenwood, Nov. 3, 1931 Mrs. Susan Wright, age ninety, died on Monday at the home of her son, S.E. Wright, Southport. She had been ill about four weeks. Born in Johnson County, Tennessee,on Christmas Day, 1841, Mrs. Wright moved to Johnson County, Indiana, with her parents, John A. Mock and Margaret Widener Mock, in 1849. They traveled to Indiana in a covered wagon and it required twenty-one days to make the trip. She was married to Andrew Mock, a cousin, in 1859. Mr. Mock was captured during Sherman's march to the sea, after joining the Union army, and died in Camp Florence, S.C., in the last year of the war. She was then married to Francis Edward Wright in 1868. Mr. Wright died in 1906. Until 1918 Mrs. Wright had lived in Johnson County. She then moved to the home of her son at Southport. She was a member of the Greenwood Christian Church. Survivors are six children: S.E. Wright, Southport; Joseph A. Wright, Indianapolis; Charles Wright, Acton; Mrs. J.T. Grubbs and Mrs. L.M. Brown of Greenwood; and Mrs. E.H. Griffith of Rocklane, Ind., and two children by her former marriage, Mrs. Martha Harting and John Mock, both of Elwood, and a brother, Thomas C. Mock of Elwood. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Greenwood Christian church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
************************************************ After the death of her first husband, Andrew, Susan applied for a pension from the government. This continued until she married Francis E. Wright in 1869 (per the pension files). When Francis died in 1906, Susan reapplied to try to get Andrew's pension reinstated. Neighbors William Brewer, David Foster, Dalton Wilson and Eugene Robison all testified for Susan. All swore that they never knew that Francis E. Wright had U.S. military service. Susan swore to that same claim. She stated that Francis died intestate and was not insured and that Francis never served in the army or navy of the United States. (This is the same Francis whose military files show him deserting from the confederate army shortly before the Civil War ended.) It was true that Francis never served in the United States army or navy so the sworn statements were essentially true. Mary Olive Griffith Winzenread, grand-daughter of Francis, reports that she remembers her mother, Alice Wright Griffith, telling that her father said that he had to swim the Yadkin River to get away. This makes it clear that Susan and the family knew about his desertion. Susan was successful in regaining her widow's pension because another application was in her files. This one was applied for 26 Sep 1916 and asked for an increase in her pension under a new Pension Act by Congress passed on 16 Sep 1916.

General Notes for Child Albert Alexander Mock
[bobspu.ged]
Individual note: BIO: For almst four score years Albert Mock constructed his owm eulogy. With no thought as to the eulogy itself, he built a living monument of unselfish devotion to his friends and neighbors, a monument of such tremendous proportions that it renders words futile and superflous. Gifted with an unusual variety of skills he made himself useful in a wide range of endeavors. As a farmer, lumberman, architect, surveyor, business man and public servant, he was known by a great host of people. This generation will probably not know his equal again. Mr. Albert was a paradox. Even in the busy life he led, he was never too busy for those little items of friendliness and neighborliness which endeared him to everyone. He seemed to take pleasure in helping others. In times of trial and trouble, celebration or activities he was always ready to help as needed. His counsel was always based on sound and righteous judgement. It was a wisdom that came from many years of experience. It was honesty from practicing honesty. It was friendship from unstinted love of his fellowman.
