General Notes (Husband)

Enlisted, Confederate Army, prisiomer, deserted

[bobspu.ged]

Jean Grubb Downey secured a copy of Francis' military records from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

According to his military records: Francis Wright volunteered for Confederate Army Service on July 22, 1861 at age 21. He was assigned to Co. I, 33rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops as a private. His enlistment is recorded at Pfafftown, NC which today is a small "burg" of about 900 population in Forsythe County, near and NNW of Winston-Salem. In December, 1862, he is listed by both the North Carolina and Army of the Potomac records as being taken prisoner at Fredericksburg. Shortly after, he is listed in a prisoner exchange and returned to his regiment. In February of 1863, he was promoted to sergeant. From July to October, 1863, he is listed as absent (sick in the hospital). No other reason was given as to his illness. The rest of 1863 and 1864 he remained on duty with the confederate forces. On February 19, 1865, North Carolina records show him as "deserted to the enemy". The Army of the Potomac records show him as a prisoner received by reason of "deserter from the enemy", Feb. 20, 1865. The last entry on his military file is a register from the Army of the Potomac of Prisoners received and disposed which simply says: "Date Feb. 22, 1865 Remarks: Rebel deserter" Because the war was essentially over at this time, he was probably held as a prisoner and then released after the formal surrender. We see him next in INDIANA in 1869 as he marries Susan Catherine MOCK who lost her first husband, Andrew MOCK, who as a member of the Union Army was captured on Sherman's march and died in a Confederate prison in Florence, SC. ************************************************************************** ****

After Francis' death, Susan re-applied for her pension based on Andrew Mock's service. She and three neighbors all swore under oath that Francis never mentioned any military service and that as far as they knew he had never been in the United States army or navy. This was essentially a true statement because he had served in the Confederate army. Mary Olive Griffith Winzenread, grand-daughter of Francis, reports that she remembers her mother, Alice Wright Griffith, telling that her father, Francis, made the statement that he had to swim the Yadkin River to get away. This report makes it clear that the family did know about his desertion.

BIO: SUSAN WRIGHT DIES AT SOUTHPORT Came to Indiana fron Tennessee in covered wagon--six children survive

Greenwood, Nov. 3, 1931 Mrs. Susan Wright, age ninety, died on Monday at the home of her son, S.E. Wright, Southport. She had been ill about four weeks. Born in Johnson County, Tennessee,on Christmas Day, 1841, Mrs. Wright moved to Johnson County, Indiana, with her parents, John A. Mock and Margaret Widener Mock, in 1849. They traveled to Indiana in a covered wagon and it required twenty-one days to make the trip. She was married to Andrew Mock, a cousin, in 1859. Mr. Mock was captured during Sherman's march to the sea, after joining the Union army, and died in Camp Florence, S.C., in the last year of the war. She was then married to Francis Edward Wright in 1868. Mr. Wright died in 1906. Until 1918 Mrs. Wright had lived in Johnson County. She then moved to the home of her son at Southport. She was a member of the Greenwood Christian Church. Survivors are six children: S.E. Wright, Southport; Joseph A. Wright, Indianapolis; Charles Wright, Acton; Mrs. J.T. Grubbs and Mrs. L.M. Brown of Greenwood; and Mrs. E.H. Griffith of Rocklane, Ind., and two children by her former marriage, Mrs. Martha Harting and John Mock, both of Elwood, and a brother, Thomas C. Mock of Elwood. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Greenwood Christian church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

************************************************ After the death of her first husband, Andrew, Susan applied for a pension from the government. This continued until she married Francis E. Wright in 1869 (per the pension files). When Francis died in 1906, Susan reapplied to try to get Andrew's pension reinstated. Neighbors William Brewer, David Foster, Dalton Wilson and Eugene Robison all testified for Susan. All swore that they never knew that Francis E. Wright had U.S. military service. Susan swore to that same claim. She stated that Francis died intestate and was not insured and that Francis never served in the army or navy of the United States. (This is the same Francis whose military files show him deserting from the confederate army shortly before the Civil War ended.) It was true that Francis never served in the United States army or navy so the sworn statements were essentially true. Mary Olive Griffith Winzenread, grand-daughter of Francis, reports that she remembers her mother, Alice Wright Griffith, telling that her father said that he had to swim the Yadkin River to get away. This makes it clear that Susan and the family knew about his desertion. Susan was successful in regaining her widow's pension because another application was in her files. This one was applied for 26 Sep 1916 and asked for an increase in her pension under a new Pension Act by Congress passed on 16 Sep 1916.

General Notes for Child Sidney Elmer Wright

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: The following obituary was printed in the "Johnson County News" on August 30, 1963.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR SID WRIGHT Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Greenwood Christian church for Sidney E. Wright, a veteran banker and resident of this area all his life. He died at his home in Southport on Saturday afternoon about 3:40 o'clock. The Rev. Richard Burton, pastor of the church, had charge of the services and burial was in the Greenwood cemetery. After being in failing health since the first of the year, Mr. Wright had been confined to his home most of the time. Born in Clark township near Rocklane on October 6, 1872, he would have been 91 years of age this year. He was the son of Francis E. Wright, who came here from North Carolina, and Susan C. Mock, who came here from Tennessee. About half of his life was lived in Greenwood and vicinity while the other half was spent in Southport. He lived in the latter community for 45 years although he worked in Greenwood. On October 15 1919, he married Nelle Ryker and to this union was born two children, Nelle and William. (NOTE: The daughter's name should have been Kathryn Pauline, not Nelle.) From 1909 until 1918, Mr. Wright was associated with the First National Bank at Greenwood. From 1918 to 1942, he was with the old Southport State Bank, and in 1942, he came back to Greenwood to work at the National Bank of Greenwood, where he was named vice-president. He had been active in the bank until the first of this year. He was a past member of the Lions Club and was active in many community affairs until his health began to fail. A banker for more than 55 years, Mr. Wright was honored about 5 years ago by the Banker's Association of Indiana as a 50-year member. Always a religous man, the deceased was the oldest member of the Greenwood Christian church. He served as an elder for 38 years, a deacon for 18 years and was superintendent of the Sunday school for fifteen years. He loved his church and worked hard for it. He was a past master of the Greenwood Masonic Order and a member for 63 years. He received a 50-year pin as a member of the Royal Arch Masons several years ago. Besides his other banking activities, he was the oldest member of the Greenwood Building and Loan association and was vice-president when he died. He had been a director of the association for more than 50 years. In 1958, he was presented with the first 50-year certificate ever awarded by the Savings and Loan League of Indiana. Survivors include the widow, a daughter, Mrs Pauline Plummer; a son, William S. Wright, both of Indianapolis; four grandsons, several nieces and nephews, and a sister, Mrs. Etta Brown, of Greenwood.

Also printed by the "Johnson County News" on August 30, 1963 was a "Tribute" to Sid entitled: VETERAN FRIEND

Friends and relatives from everywhere will miss Sidney E. Wright who passed away Saturday afternoon. "Sid" as most people knew him, had friends everywhere. He was a friend. He liked people and he liked to talk to them. Certainly a veteran at friendship, new people learned to like him rapidly. Old people loved him. Sid liked to joke with everyone and had a lot of stories to tell. He rarely complained and if he did, it was in a joking manner. He reported at the bank to do his duties many days when he should have stayed at home but this was his life. He liked to work.

(At this point the tribute repeats the accomplishments of work and civic service enumerated in the above obituary.)

Sid Wright certainly set an example to follow. He was honest, sincerely good and loved by his fellow man. Yes, a lot of people are going to miss that jovial smile and hearty "hello" every day that came from Sid Wright, a veteran friend. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998

General Notes for Child William E. Wright

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: OBITUARY: William E. Wright, son of F.E. and Susan Wright, was born June 2, 1874, died July 5th, 1898, being therefore 24 years, 1 month and 3 days old at the time of his decease. Mr. Wright was sick about three years during which time he manifested a spirit of unusual patience and urged upon his relatives and friends the necessity of submission to the will of God. During his short life he was a true friend, a loving brother and a dutiful son. He was generous almost to a fault. Nothing he ever possessed was too precious to be shared by his friends and relatives. During last winter he expressed a desire to become a member of the church, but did not feel physically able to submit to the ordinance of baptism at that time, but it is sincerely hoped that the Great Giver of all good will will accept the desire for the deed. A young life is now ended upon earth but may it go on to a full completion in the greater beyond. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday morning, July 8th by Elder A.H. Davis of the Christian Church of this city. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998

General Notes for Child Charles A. (Charley) Wright

[bobspu.ged]

Individual note: . 1. Family Genealogy compiled by Leta GRIFFITH GRUBB, niece of Charley 2. Family stories remembered by Ernie GRUBB

BIO: We always called him "Uncle Charley" although he was really my mother's uncle. Two of the family stories "stick" in my mind although there were many more about this "colorful" person and his brothers. Uncle Charley and his wife, Ella, lived on a farm on the Acton Road not far from Rocklane, IN where I grew up. A "T" road joined the Acton road about 1/4 of a mile from their house. Many times, especially on Saturday nights, a driver would drive through the "T" and into Charley's fence. Also, probably because they had been drinking and before Charley could call the sheriff and make it to the scene, they would free themselves and drive away leaving Charley with a fence to mend. Charley decided he had had enough. He bought some large corner posts and placed them across from the "T" so anyone going through the "T" would either hit the posts or wedge the car between. After that he laughed and said, "now when I hear someone hit the corner, I call the sheriff and go back to sleep."

The other story concerns a milk inspector. Charley was milking a few cows and selling the milk. This required for his barn and "milk house" to be inspected monthly for sanitation purposes. He always had a very clean milkhouse. One month, the inspector for some reason, gave Charley a "black" mark, citing a weak spring on the milkhouse screen door. This, he stated, could let in insects and did not meet sanitation standards. Charley, again, came up with an answer. He found a large spring off of some piece of farm equipment and for a month, until the inspector returned, kept it on the milkhouse screened door. It was so strong, one could barely open the door. Needless to say, Charley did not get any more "picky" black marks.
