General Notes (Husband)
!See "The Great Migration Begins," by Robert Charles And e r s on, p 1777. It tells that on 26 Jul 1651, the son o f t h e R ev. Thomas Stoughton wrote to Winthrop a length y theo lo gica l treatise, signing himself as "Thomas Stoug hton, s o n and h eir of Thomas Stoughton, deceased." Ande rson sa y s the refe rence here is to his father, Rev. Thom as Stoug ht on, a leadi ng light of Elizabethan Puritanis m who was s ile nced early i n the reign of King James I, a nd who spen t th e rest of hi s life producing theologica l pamphlets. S o w e are reasonabl y certain that the Rev . Thomas Stoughto n i s the correct anc estor for our Kathe rine Stoughton wh o mar ried John Wilcox , Jr.
!For a time, it was uncertain whether the ancestry o f t h e R ev. Thomas Stoughton traces back through Franci s Stou gh ton . In TAG 29:4, p. 193, Ralph M.Stoughton, Esq . sugge ste d th at the father of the Rev. Thomas Stoughto n who mar rie d Kath erine was probably a John Stoughton an d not Fran ci s Stought on. However, new evidence found b y Genevieve T yle e Kiepura , published in TAG 33:105-112 , proves that Fr anci s Stoughto n is the correct father.
!In the will of the Uncle of the Rev. Thomas Stoughton , T h o mas Stoughton of New Canterbury, Kent, 1591, ther e is m en ti on of "nephew Thomas Stoughton of Suffolk an d the tw o da ugh ters of Thomas Stoughton the minister. " (See TA G 33:10 5)
!According to information sent to me by Robert T. Barr e t t , 694 Fasola Road, Sequim, Washington, 98382, the Re v . Th om as Stoughton was succeeded as rector at Naughton , S uffol k , England in July, 1694. It is not known wher e he s pen t hi s next six years, but he became Vicar of Co ggeshal l, E ssex , England on Dec. 12, 1600. He was remov ed fro m his n ew vi carage on Apr. 4, 1606, reason unknown . Accor ding t o inform ation in "Genealogies and Biographi es of An cient W indsor, " his second wife, Elizabeth who m he marrie d afte r the deat h of his first wife, Katherin e, in 1603 , remarri ed in 161 0 to William Knight of Linco ln. Thus, t he Rev.Tho mas Stoug hton must have died befor e 1610.
!See TAG 29:193; "Stoughton Family of Dorchester, Mas s . a n d Windsor, Conn.," "Genealogies and Biographies o f An cie n t Windsor;" and "Descendents of Thomas Stoughto n of D orch es ter, Massachusetts, " by George W. Fuller fo r a comp rehen siv e account of the Rev. Thomas Stoughton' s life his tory.
General Notes (Wife)
!According to TAG 29:198-201, Israel's mother, Katheri n e M o ntpesson, died two months after Israel's birth in C og gesh al l, Essex, England, where he was chr. 18 Feb 1602 /3 . Con seq uently, Israel was raised by his stepmother , Eli zabeth , who , after the death of Israel's father, be came t he wif e of Wi lliam Knight of Lincoln, England. Is rael as sumed t he plac e of an elder half-brother to his s tepmothe r's fiv e Knigh t children, Elizabeth, William, Jo hn, Mary , and Urs ula. Wi lliam Knight died in 1630, leav ing a wil ll dated 2 1 Mar 162 9/30 in which he appointed a s the exec utor, Israe l Stoughto n, his son-in-law. By tha t time, Isr ael Stoughto n had marri ed William Knight's da ughter, Eliz abeth.
General Notes for Child Mary Stoughton
!No mention of Mary Stoughton as a sister to Thomas Stou g h t on and Israel Stoughton was made in their biographic a l in fo rmation in "The Great Migration Begins." Howeve r , she w a s mentioned as a probable sister to Thomas an d Is rael, a n d a daughter of the Rev. Thomas Stoughton i n TA G 33:107 . P lease see the qualification mentioned i n th e notes fo r Mar y Stoughton's probable sister, Margar et St oughton. O f al l three probable daughters mentioned , Mar y seems the m ost l ikely to remain in the records o f thi s family. She i s alre ady accepted as a daughter i n Ances tral File while t he othe r two sisters are not.
!In TAG 33:107, it also says that Mary Stoughton marri e d J o hn Mansfield at Coggeshall, Essex, England. If th e na me M an sfield could be read as Maxfield, these migh t be th e par ent s of Clement Maxfield who married Mary De nman, da ughte r o f Judith Denman Smead.
General Notes for Child Margaret Stoughton
!Margaret Stoughton was mentioned as a probable daugh t e r o f the Rev. Thomas Stoughton and his wife, Katheri n e b y Ms . Genevieve Tyles Kiepura in TAG 33:107. Howeve r , the re we re three daughters mentioned by Ms.Kiepura ba se d sole ly upo n marriage records, all of whom would hav e mo st like ly hav e been born by 1591. In that year, the re wa s a wil l made b y Thomas Stoughton, Uncle to the Rev . Thom as Stoug hton, i n which he mentions, among others , "his ne phew Thom as Stoug hton of Suffolk and the two da ughters o f Thomas St oughton t he minister."
!Of the three probable daughters, Mary Stoughton, Marg a r e t Stoughton, and Elizabeth Stoughton, mentioned by M s . Ki ep ura, it is my judgement that Margaret Stoughton w ou ld b e th e one to eliminate in order to match the numbe r o f dau ghter s mentioned by the Rev. Thomas Stoughton' s Uncl e in h is 159 1 will. But, of course, I am not sure . Mayb e it sho uld b e Mary or Elizabeth who should be eli minated . Or, ma ybe th e Uncle only remembered two out o f the thre e.
!For the present, I am leaving all three probable daugh t e r s in my records.
General Notes for Child Elizabeth Stoughton
!Elizabeth was added to this family after she was menti o n e d as a probably daughter of the Rev. Thomas Stoughto n a n d h is wife, Katherine in TAG 33:107. Only her marri ag e wa s gi ven, to John Scudder at St. Mary's in Maldon , Ess ex, E nglan d. Like the other three probable sister s menti oned i n th e article, no record of a christening h as bee n found.
!Please see the qualification mentioned in the notes f o r E l izabeth Stoughton's probable sister, Margaret Stoug ht on . O f the three probable daughters mentioned, Elizab et h wo uld b e in second place to be the accepted member o f t he fa mily o f the Rev. Thomas Stoughton and his wife , Kath erine.
General Notes for Child Thomas Stoughton
!This Thomas Stoughton was buried the same day as his ch r i s tening, according to the microfilm of the Naughton Pa ri s h R ecord, British Film 919624, part 2.
General Notes for Child Rev. John Stoughton
!John Stoughton served as a minister in Aller, Somerse t , E n gland. (See NEHGR 147:155.) He also served as a mi ni st e r at Aldermanbury in London, as that is where he ma rri e d hi s second wife. There is an extensive history o f th e Re v. Jo hn Stoughton in TAG 29:4:193-96, "The Stoug hto n Famil ieso f Dorchester, MA and Windsor, CT."
!There is a conflict in Ancestral File regarding John' s b i r th date, one having 1593, and the other 1597. It i s ve r y u nlikely that John was born in 1593 because tha t is wh e n hi s brother, Thomas, was born. A birth for Joh n in 15 9 7 woul d appear unlikely too, judging from othe r informat io n know n about him. It is unfortunate that J ohn's chris ten ing rec ord was not found in the Naughton P arish recor d fo r then w e would know for sure. The best c lue to his b irt h can be in ferred from the reference in T AG 29:4, 194 , wher e it says th at John Stoughton was admit ted "sizer " at Emma nuel Colleg e on 23 Apr 1607. In Webst er's Dictio nary, it s ays a size r is "a student who recei ved an allow ance towar d college ex penses and who origina lly acted a s a servant t o other stude nts in return for t his allowanc e." Being a " sizer" at ag e 18 is probably r easonable, s o that would giv e an estimat e of birth for J ohn in the ye ar 1589.
!In Dec 1634, James Cudworth, a son-in-law of the Rev . J o h n Stougjton, who had immigrated to America along wi th T ho ma s and Israel Stougjton, wrote his stepfather a l ong l ett e r in which he mentions Thomas and Israel Stougt on a s foll ow s: "as concerining my unkells, blessed be G od, t hey ar e bo th in good health, & my unkell Thomas i s to be e marie d shor tly to a widow that has good meane s & ha s 5 children ." (Se e TAG:29, p.197.)
General Notes for Child Thomas Stoughton Sr.
!It is thought that Thomas Stoughton came to Americ a o n t h e ship, the "Mary and John," arriving 30 May 163 0 acc ompa ni ed by his three youngest children, Sarah, Kat herine , an d Th omas. If his first wife accompanied him , she mus t hav e die d fairly soon, for he married again i n 1635. J ames C udwort h, son-in-law, to Thomas' brother , the Rev. J ohn Sto ughto n who remained in England, wrot e a letter t o his step -fathe r in Dec. 1634, in which h e mentions tha t his two un cles, T homas and Israel were i n good health , and that Thom as was t o be married shortl y to a widow wi th living childr en. (TAG :29:4, p.197) Th omas and his ne w wife were amon g those wh o established t he settlement o f Windsor in Conne cticut, an d must have r emoved there a s early as 1636, sinc e a Court h eld at New town (Hartford ) on 21 Feb 1637 mentio ns him by na me. (TA G 29:4, p. 197 ) Also see "The Great Mig ration Begins ," b y Robert Charle s Anderson, pp.1777-1779 , for a fairly c o mprehensive hist ory of his life and famil y. Also see "T h e English Ancest ry of Thomas Stoughton, 15 88-1661, (sho ul d be 1593-1661 a s explained below) and Hi s Son Thoma s Stoug hton, 1624-168 4," by Ethel McLaughlin Tu rner an d Paul Boynt on Turner, ( Waterloo, Wisconsin, 1958."
!In Anderson's record, Thomas was christened 23 Jan 1592 / 9 3 . In the IGI, another Thomas was christened 9 Jul 15 8 8 . Th is conflict prompted me to look at the microfil m o f t he Nau ghton Parish Record, British Film 919624, pa r t 2 . I discov ered that there were two Thomas Stoughton s , th e first one c hristened 9 Jul 1588, and the second c hr isten ed 23 Jan 1593 . Although difficult to read, ther e w as a m ention in the s ame Parish Record that the firs t Tho mas ha d died the same d ay that he was christened.
!Two children, John Stoughton, AFN 46D3-Z6, and Israel S t o u ghton, AFN 46D4-0B, were submitted to Ancestral Fil e a s b el onging to the family of Thomas Strougton, probab ly i n er ror . (See "The Great Migration Begins," p.1776. ) Ho wever , An ita H. Davis of Bountiful, Utah, who share s my s ame Jo hn Wi lcox ancestry, continues to list them , mention ing "Th e Sett lement of Windsor, Connecticut" b y Avery an d Siemiat koski , p. 11, which says there were " young, most ly singl e men su ch as Israel Stoughton." Ani ta suggest s that ther e were ot her grown children left be hind in Eng land, one o r two whic h might have come late r like Thomas ' brother Isr ael did i n 1632. (It is possib le that this y oung Israel St oughton i n question was a so n of Thomas Sto ughton's younge r brother , Israel, even th ough he was no t known to have li ved in Con necticut.) Th e data for thes e two children tha t I have no t listed ar e as follows: Jo hn Stoughton, b. ab t 1623, of C oggeshal l, Essex, England , died England or USA , baptize d 8 Jun 1 940 and endowed 2 7 Mar 1946, ARIZO, an d sealed t o parent s 30 Jan 1947, ARI ZO; and Israel Stought on, abt 162 6, o f Coggeshall, Essex , England, died prob. Wi ndsor, Hartf o rd, Connecticut, bap tized 21 Sep 1994, LOGAN , endowed 1 8 M ar 1995, LOGAN, an d sealed to parents 4 Ma y 1995, LOG AN. S o, at least th e temple work has been don e for the m should t hey be foun d to be children of Thomas S toughto n and Elizabe th Thomps on.
Thomas Stoughton is duplicated in Ancestral File, prob a b l y becuase of the fact that there was a infant, Thoma s S to ug hton, who died in 1588 as explained above, prio r to t hi s Th omas Stroughton. The duplicate number is AF N 1V6K- 6C3 . An d the duplicate ordinances are bap 8 Mar 1 995, en d 1 5 Apr 1 995, and S.P. 19 Apr 1995, all at the B ountifu l Tem ple.
General Notes for Child Anne Stoughton
!See TAG 29:4:198. Anne Stoughton who married Henry Cha m b e rlain, was probably named after an older sister, als o n am e d Anne, who died in 1591. She came to America i n th e "Di li gent," with her husband. There is no record o f the ir dea t h dates, but it is believed they both died i n Hing ham, Pl ym outh, Massachusetts.
!It is thought that Anne's father, Rev. Thomas Stought o n , r esided in Burstead Magna after he was suceeded as R ec to r a t Naughton in July 1594, so I have entered "of Bu rst ea d Mag na, Essex, England," as Anne's place of birth , bec aus e tha t is where her younger sister, Judith was c hriste ne d in 159 9. Thomas Stoughton was named Vicar o f Coggesh al l in Esse x 12 Dec 1600.
!In TAG 33:111, Genevieve Tyles Kiepura, questions th e f a c t that both Judith Stoughton and Anne Stoughton wer e ac tu a l members of the family of the Rev. Thomas Stough ton a n d hi s wife, Katherine. Ms. Kiepura argues: "Judit h's ch il dre n are not mentioned in the Stoughton wills, n or wa s th e sup posed sister, Ann Chamberlain." However , in "Th e Gr eat Mi gration Begins," Robert Charles Ander son claim s tha t the fi ndings of Kiepura did not go far e nough fo r she di d not rea lize that the Rev. Thomas Stoug hton ha d lived fo r a time i n Burstead Magna.
General Notes for Child Judith Stoughton
!In TAG:29:4:198, it does not list her birth date. Th e d a t e I found in the IGI from the LDS Church Name Extra cti o n Pr ogram, seems to fit very well. I will use it a s he r c hrist ening date since Anderson in "The Great Migr atio n Beg ins, " believes that both Judith and Ann were bo rn th ere. ( See b elow)
!In the same article, Ralph M.Stoughton, gave the follo w i n g regarding Judith Stoughton: "Judith, who married (1 s t ) Jo hn Denman, and (2nd) a man whose surname was Smea d , co ncern ing whom nothing has been found on record. S h e was o ne o f the signers of the Dorchester Church Coven an t in 163 6, an d at the time of her death in 1639 wa s a wid ow. The G enera l Court confirmed Israel Stoughto n as execu tor of th e wil l 'of his sister, Judith Smead, ' and the di sposal o f her ef fects is on record, though n o copy of he r will ha s been pre served." Though not prove d, it is poss ible tha t Judith wa s a widow before leavin g England and t hat she j ourneyed t o America in 1633 wit h Israel Stoughto n and hi s wife, Eliza beth.
!In TAG 33:105-112, Genevieve Tylee Kiepura, questio n s t h e assumed fact that the widow, Judith Smead, who di e d a t Do rchester, MA, in 1639 was a blood sister to Isra e l Sto ughto n. She has found no evidence that there eve r w as a J udit h Stoughton, and she believes that Israel' s men tion o f Judi th Smead as his "sister" needs better d ocumen tation . Her ba sic question was: "If Judith Smead w ere Isr ael's o wn sister , why did he not take her young o rphan so n into h is house a nd educate him. The boy was ap prenticed . Judith' s childre n are not mentioned in the St oughton wi lls, nor w as the sup posed sister, Ann Chamberl ain." Howev er, accordi ng to Rober t Charles Anderson in " The Great Mi gration Begi ns, the find ings of Kiepura di d not go far en ough, and tha t she did no t realize that t he Rev. Thomas S toughton was i n Burstead Ma gna at the ti me that Judith an d Ann were born.

!See "The Great Migration Begins," by Robert Charles And e r s on, pp. 1773-1776. There is a fairly complete histo r y o f I srael Soughton and his family. Also see TAG 29:19 3- 20 4 an d TAG 33:109-110.
!The following is a summary: Israel was raised by his s t e p mother, Elizabeth Stoughton Knight, in Lincoln, Engla n d . I srael and his wife, Elizabeth Knight, the eldest d au gh ter o f his father-in-law, came to America in 1632 . Lik e h is bro ther, Thomas, he became one of the firs t settler s o f Dorche ster, Massachusetts. He had large r eal estat e hol dings i n Dorchester and served in public o ffice. H e had t he titl e of Captain, and was an aide t o John Mason . In hi s father- in-law, William Knight's wil l, dated 21 M ar 1629/ 30, Israe l was appointed executor o f his estate . Willia m mentione d his widow, Margaret Kni ght, and fou r children , William, J ohn, Mary, and Ursula . After Willia m Knight' s death, thes e members of the fam ily of Elizabet h Knight , wife of Israel , also came to Ne w England, inclu ding he r mother, the wido w Elizabeth Kni ght, her brother , Rev. Wi lliam Knight, and t wo other sis ters, Mary, wif e of Thoma s Clark and Ursula, wi fe of Dav id Yale, account ing for al l of the children mentio ned i n the will excep t John. It i s assumed that Elizabeth , w ife of Israel Sto ugton, was no t mentioned in the will b e cause her husban d was named exec utor which would also i nclu de herself. I srael returned t o England in 1643 an d brough t back with h im a fourteen-yea r-old "kinsman" na med Rose St oughton, da ughter of Anthon y Stoughton an d a sister of Si r Nichola s Stoughton, Barone t of Stought on, Surrey, England . Israe l "espoused the Crom well cause ," returned again to E nglan d and was given a com missio n in the Calvary. He quick l y rose through the rank s bei ng appointed Lt. Col. under " R ainsboro" until his dea t h in Lincoln, England in 1645. H i s will was dated 17 J u l 1644 in London, England.
