General Notes (Husband)
Jekyll Island lost a solid citizen when Benjamin A. Morgan, Jr.knownas Toby to his close friends, died on Saturday, September 30,1989,after seven uncomplaining years of living in pain. He hadtwoartificial knees and one artificial hip which was replaced once, andyet he was always that friendly and smiling, gregarious gentlemanwiththat slow, drawling Southern accent and mild sense of humor. Tobywasa civil engineer employed by a firm up East when he was senttoBrunswick in 1968 to inspect and supervise the renovation ofBrunswickPulp and Paper Company. He and his lovely wife of almostsixty years,Lucy, leased their present home on Hyde Avenue while Benwent abouthis assigned task in Brunswick. Later they convinced theowner that heshould sell them the home, the 30th home they hadoccupied sincetheir marriage. He did and they became its new ownersand occupants.Ben's beginning was in Greenville, SC in a family offour children -an older brother and sister and a younger sister. Hisfather was anattorney and it seems as if Ben inherited his father'sability toorganize his remarks in a forceful and logical fashion. HeattendedClemson College, a few miles from his home, and he remainedits proudand faithful alumnus throughout his life. After college Benappliedfor a job in the Panama Canal Zone, much to his surprise hewasaccepted. He moved there and the real benefit of his move wasthatwhile there he met Lucy Ulmer, originally from Alabama. Theyweremarried in 1929 and from their marriage came two wonderful andlovingchildren - a son, Dr. Benjamin Morgan,III, now of Waterford, Vaand adaughter, Dr. Martha Jane Morgan Peterson, now of Atlanta. WorldWarII came along and although Ben was overage and the father oftwochildren, he felt it his duty to volunteer; he was "gung ho" toserve. He had previously served in the National Guard and in theArmyReserve. His first WWII assignment was commander of a batteryofsearchlights used to protect Patterson, NJ, from sea andairbombardment. He confessed to Lucy that this assignment was foreigntohim; he did not even know where the switch was to turnthesearchlights on. Later he was reassigned to the Army CorpsofEngineers where his civil engineering skills were put to good use.Benwas a multi-talented person. In college he was an outstandinghurdleron the track team and a member of the military band. He laterpaid aportion of his college education as a drummer in a jazz band.Soonafter moving to Jekyll Island he became an active thespian ontheJekyll Island stage. In his younger days he was an avid marksmanandgun club enthusiast, but as age took its toll he became a HAMradiodevotee, and for more than thirty years he was an active HAM. Hehadmany happy experiences with his radio, contacting manyforeignoperators as well as those in each of the fifty states. Onmore thanone occasion he served in emergencies by providingcommunications withother HAMS located in communities and counties shutoff from the worldby natures's disasters. If there is one thing I amsure of, it isthat Ben Morgan would not approve of this article beingwritten. Hewas a very humble man who never wanted his "horn tooted"in a solo.He wanted to be a contributor to the success of the wholeband. Tobyhad been a member of several Rotary Clubs during hisactiveprofessional career, and about four years ago he was inductedinto theRotary Club of Jekyll Island. He truly lived the philosophyof Rotary- of Service above Self. Two years ago fellow Jekyll IslandRotariansrecognized Toby's life of service by naming him a Paul HarrisFellow, the highest award that can be bestowed on a fellow Rotarian. Aswouldbe predicted, Toby was very humble in his acceptance but alsoveryproud. Yes, we have lost a good friend, but he lived a full lifeoflove and service, and somehow the world is better today because ofthelife of Toby Morgan and our lives have been made fuller becauseweknew him.
