#52. The Augustan. Basil III Dmitrivich (1389-1425). He vastly expanded the Russian State (Muscovy) and held off the Tatars and Lithuanians, while reducing the states of Tver' and Rostov to merely minor threats.

#53. Basil IV Basilivich (1425-1433, 1433-1434, 1434-1446, 1447-1462). In defiance of the rota principle, he suceeded his father, although his brother Pyotr Basilivich should have succeeded. His success established the principle of primogeniture and destroyed the rota. However, his accession precipitated one of the bloodiest succession struggles in Russian history. His uncle Yurii and Yurii's two sons usurped the throne. As an indication of the ferocity of the struggle, Basil IV b linded his cousin Basil V and was in turn blinded by his other cousin Dmitri V. In the last part of his reign (1447-1462), Basil IV was know as Temnoi (the Dark, Blind).

#57. The Augustan. Ivan III Basilivich the Great (1462-1505). One of Muscovy's greatest rulers, he destroyed most of his enemies. Novgorod was neutralized in 1471 and annexed in 1478. Tver' was annexed in 1485. In 1472, Ivan married Zoe (Sophia), niece of Constantine XIII, last Emperor of Byzantium. In the same year, he crowned Zoe as Great Princess. The political implications of the marriage soon became apparent. It was bruited about thjat when Rome fell, it was replaced by Constantinople (the "Second Rome"). Now Constantinople had fallen (1453) and there is now a "third Rome": Moskva. During the early part of Ivan's reign, he had been called "Tsar" (a Russian corruption of Caesar) as a token of respect by his own subjects. This was probably done with Basil IV, as well, if not with Basil III. By 1480, however, the title was being used in Russia's international correspondence, and by 1494 it had been recognized by the international community. Thus the ruler f Russia takes on his modern title, although for some time it often appears as "Tsar and Great Prince". After 1721, the title "Emperor" is also used, and later, that of "Autocrat".
A few words must be said at this point about Russian society. The social structure of the Muscovite state is important to the history of the last of the Rurikids (58-60). Below the jTsar is the nobility, the jBoyare. There are two kinds, hereditry and service. The hereditary boyare are of the old Muscovite nobility or are the old indep;endent Princes (Knyaz, Prince) whose states have been absorbed by Moskva. The estate (votchina) of such a Prince is hereditary, and in many cases is divided amoung all his sons. The service nobility, the dvorianstuo, hold and estate (pomestache) only by virtue of state service. It is the policy of the Tsars to replace the former with the latter.
There is also a class of artisans and merchants in Russia, but very little is known about them, as about townsmen generally. The term goat' is applied to a merchant, or to some merchants, but the meaning of the term is not clear until the 17th Century, when it comes to mean a particular type and class of merchant. In this area, as in all others, the tenency of Muscovy is to create more and more regimented and rigid class structures, so that all the subject of the jCrown are totaly dependent upon it for their position in life. This will be achieved by the Romanovs.

# 44. The Augustan. Yurii IV Daniilovich (1319-1322). Well, speak of the devil! Danill Aleksandrovich died in 1303, rendering his descendents izgoi. However this did not daunt Yurii Daniilovich, who cozied up to the Khan and bribed every Tatar in sight, with the result that he obtained the deposition of Mikhail III and his own elevation as Prince of Vladimir and Great Prince of Russia. Out of this arose the terrible and bloody feud between the Houses of Moskva and Tver'. Yurii was himself deposed in 1322. #44.
