BIO: The 1850 census for Fulton Co., IN shows a 20 yr. old Adam MOW living in the home of David MOW, Jr., whose age is given as 22. The place of birth for both Adam and David is IN. David, Jr.'s wife, Eleanor HOLDSTOCK, and two small sons are also enumerated in this home, as is "Samuel", 59 yr. old and born in KY. Just 4 houses away there is a David MOW, Sr. (51), born in KY., also a James MOW (16) born in OHIO. Next door is another home consisting of William MOW, born OHIO, and his wife Caroline (20), born in NY. Since Adam later named a son David Bruce, compiler first assumed that David, Jr. and Adam were brothers and their father was David, Sr. who was enumerated in his own household. Margarett STICHLER STEININGER, grand daughter of David Bruce, wrote compiler that the "Samuel" shown in David, Jr.'s home was the father of the two young men. David MOW, Jr., the husband of Eleanor HOLDSTOCK, served in Co. F of the 87th Reg., Indiana Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He was discharged with total disability on Dec., 1862. Military Pension File records do not identify his parents or any relatives other than his children who applied for their "Minor Children's Benefits" long after the death of their father. Adam MOW's obituary states that he had married Harriet WALKER in MAR, 1850; (Marriage Records states 16 MAR 1851) the 1850 census showing Adam in his "half-brother's" home was conducted in October, 1850. On that census, there is a place for "Married within the year"; there is no tally by Adam's name to indicate that he had married. William MOW in household #41, however, reports that he had married in that census year.
[Obituary: Adam H. Mow; taken from a photocopy of page 154; "Newspaper Excerpts--Rochester Union Spy", 10 MAR 1876]
"DIED.-ADAM H. MOW was born October 6, 1829 in Shelby county, Indiana, and died in Richland Township, Fulton county, March 2, 1876, aged 46 years, 4 months and 26 days. He was married to Miss HARRIET WALKER, March 16, 1850, who with six children survive him. The deceased was a member of the church for a number of years prior to his death and was known and respected in his neighborhood as a clever, honest and faithful neighbor and citizen. His death is deeply mourned by all his relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted by the IOOF lodge at Salina, of which he had been a good and faithful member. The religious services were conducted by Rev. ROBERT B. BEATY, and the burial was attended by a large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends--sixty-two wagons and a number of men on horseback were in the procession. His remains were laid away in the cemetery at the Central Church. As neighbors and associates we deeply sympathize with the bereaved family, hoping that at some time we may enjoy the reward and the society of Brother MOW." -B.C. WILSON. (Resolutions of Respect...Bro. ADAM H. MOW, P.G. and member of 435 IOOF....C.W. HOLMAN, JAMES GIBBONS, SOLOMON CAVINGER, com)
Compiler was still somewhat uncertain of the identity of Adam MOW's father, but in January 1998, compiler's husband found the MOW family on one of Broderbund's "World Family Tree" CDs. One of these entries had been submitted by Nancy NORQUIST of Shoreline, WA. The data submitted for that disk shows Adam H., b. October 04, 1829, and Rebecca, b. October 04, 1830, as the children born to John Samuel MOW and Rebecca ARMSTRONG after their marriage on 25 Feb. 1827. According to this disk entry, the child, Rebecca, died 05 Feb. 1844. No place of death or burial is listed. Since the WFT disks do not provide space for documentation/referencing, compiler has written a letter to Ms. NORQUIST, hoping to find out her sources of data. As of 22 Jan. 1998, there has been no response.

BIO: This couple was married in Shelby County, IN on 16 MAR 1851, per the marriage records of that county. The 1850 census for Richland Twp.; Fulton Co., IN shows Adam MOW (20) and Samuel MOW (59) both in the household of David MOW, Jr. with his wife, Elinor. Per Wilma FOLTZ and Margarett STEININGER, both desc. of Adam and Harriet, David, Jr. and Adam are sons of Samuel (John Samuel MOW). The MOW home was enumerated in OCT, 1850. Although the census form had a question regarding "Married within the year" there is no indication that Adam is married. There is no mention of Harriet Jane in this home. Compiler suspects that one of the following is true: 1. The marriage date for Adam and Harriet is not correct. (This date appears in both obituaries, so that possibility is doubtful) 2. The Adam in David, Jr.'s home is not the Adam who married Harriet WALKER. Adam's census age is appropriate, however. 3. Census enumerator overlooked the question regarding "within the year marriages" It is possible that they married in Shelby County, IN and Harriet had not yet moved. ************************************************************************** ***
The following obituaries were copied and sent to compiler by Wilma FOLTZ. Sources were not given, but at least one probably comes from the excerpts of the "Rochester Union Spy" on microfilm at Fulton Co. Library. Both were hand copied, then photocopied.

Jane WALKER was born in Shelby county Indiana December 30, 1833 and died May 15, 1905, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 14 days. Deceased was well known in the community where she resided prior to her death and was highly respected by all who knew her. The funeral was held this afternoon at 1 oclock and interment made at Richland Center cemetery."
************************************************************************** **** Harriet WALKER was born in Shelby county Indiana December 30, 1833. Was united in marriage to A. MOW March 16, 1850. To this union was born nine children; six boys and three girls. One boy and one girl have preceded her to the Spirit world. She was connected and united with the Methodist Church in 1857. BIO: MRS. ANNA LAWSON DIES AT HOME NORTH OF CITY Aged lady--Victim of Heart Trouble Leaves many survivors--Funeral Plans Mrs. Anna Eliza Daggett Lawson, aged 75, died at her home five and a half miles north of this city on the Michigan Road in Richland Township Wednesday evening at 11:30 o'clock after two months illness caused by heart failure. Every aid known to medical science was used to combat the disease but because of the victim's age all efforts proved to no avail. The deceased was born in Richland Township on September 4, 1852 and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Mowe. She attended Whippoorwill school. When she was 20 years of age, she married Charles Allan Lawson, who preceded her in death two years ago. Her entire married life, Mrs. Lawson spent in Springfield, Ill., moving to this county after her husband's death. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Rough of South Bend, and Mrs. Nellie Julian of Arlington, Kansas, three sons, Fred Lawson and Harry Lawson of Springfield, Ill., and Eddie Lawson of Meridan, Miss., three brothers, Samuel Mowe, Cornelius, Oregon, Marion and Dave of this city and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Weir of Rochester and several grandchildren. Pending word from relatives who live at distant points no funeral arrangements have been made. Burial will be made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Richland Cemetery. Thurs. May 31, 1928
This obituary makes no mention of Anna Eliza's first marriage. Per Mrs. FOLTZ, she first married Robert Daggett in Sept. of 1871. This would have been when Anna was about 20 years old as mentioned in the obit. Robert died in 1881 and Anna married again to Charles Lawson in March 1882. Lawson is not mentioned in the above obituary other than he died about two years earlier. In data supplied by Mrs. FOLTZ and Ms. WILLIAMS, Charles Lawson died in South Bend two years after Anna. It would appear that they were not living together at the time of her death. Charles is also buried at Richland Center.

BIO: Per M. Steininger: James Samuel married 5 times. His marriage to Celicia Allen is the only one listed in "Fulton County Marriage Index, p.715. R. WILLIAMS was unable to find any death data in Fulton Co. for this James or Celicia. Ms. WILLIAMS did find one "James" Samuel MOW who died in 1852; but this would have been before the birth of this James. Compiler suspects this death was for John Samuel MOW rather than James. (John was the grandfather of this James) Later. Wilma FOLTZ located the place of death for James S. as OREGON. 19 MAR 1913: James Samuel Mow "(unmarried) of Cornelius, County of Washington, State of Oregon...." sold Fulton Co. land on the banks of the Tippecanoe River to his brother, David B. Mow. 11 June 1917, James Samuel's brother, Ulysses S.G. "Grant" MOW named James S. in his will--"I give and bequeath to my brothers David B. MOW, Marion L. MOW, James S. MOW, the sum of One Hundred Dollars..." Wilma MOW FOLTZ reports that James Samuel is buried "between Astoria and Seaside, OR."

BIO: David Bruce mow, compiler's great grandfather, died eight years before compiler was born. Reports of members of the GILCHRIST family have drawn a vivid picture in compiler's mind of a gentle, highly respected family man,who was ever-present in the family circle and cherished by his grandsons, as well as his children. David MOW was the third of eight children of Adam H. and Harriet "Jane" WALKER MOW. He lived most of his life in the community of Whippoorwill near Rochester, IN. In 1879, David married Catherine BEEHLER, the daughter of first-generation immigrants from GERMANY. The MOWs had seven children in their 52-year marriage. They were humble people, yet they reared their children with great dignity and self-respect. David was a carpenter and a farmer, who also spent some time working on road-building crews in northern INDIANA. While never a large land owner, he did maintain a small farm most of his married life. In 1913, David bought a 19 acre tract from his older brother, James Samuel, who had migrated to OREGON. This property was located in Township 31 north, Range 2-E, in Section 22--in Richland Township, north of the Tippecanoe River, about two miles east of South Germany Cemetery and five miles east of the Leiters Ford community. In Fulton County Deed Book 79, compiler found a release and quit-claim from David and Catherine's living children and surviving children of their deceased daughter, to Catherine for the remaining estate of David MOW. This estate included a strip of land in the same location at that deeded to David from James Samuel, as well as "all personal property, of any kind or character ...including particularly the Ford Coupe owned by David MOW...1922 Model T.."
Obituary From the "Rochester Sentinel" DAVID MOWE SUCCUMBS AFTER LENGTHY ILLNESS David Mowe, 75, well known resident of the Whippoorwill community died at 6:30 Wednesday morning. Death was due to complications of diseases and followed a two months illness. Mr. Mowe, who had spent practically all of his life in the Whippoorwill neighborhood, followed the occupations of a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Grand View Church. Surviving are his wife, whose maiden name was Katherine Beehler; two daughters, Mrs. Maime Stickler, near Whippoorwill, Mrs. Gladys Riggs of South Bend; three sons, Floyd, Omer and Carlton, all of South Bend; two brothers, Marion of Whippoorwill and Samuel, of Oregon. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
The obituary has been copied exactly as it appeared in the newspaper The "Record of Death" gives the cause of death as "Carcinomia of Doudimunary" It was signed by L. MEEK, M.D., a family doctor often mentioned by the descendents of David MOW. Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler copies of three pages of handwritten data concerning the MOW family. They appear to be part of a ledger or notebook but the source is unknown. The handwriting appears to be a feeble feminine hand. It is possible that it may have been written by Catherine BEEHLER MOW, who survived until 1948. On the first of three pages, the third entry reads: "David Bruce Mow departed from this woorld october the 14. 1931"

BIO: Wilma FOLTZ , a grand daughter of Marion MOW, sent a photocopy of the following: IN MEMORIAM obituary Marion L. Mow, son of Adam H. and Harriet Mow, was born in Richland Township, Fulton county, Indiana, November 9, 1859 and departed this life November 11, 1932, aged 73 years and 2 days. He has lived his entire life in this community. He was one of a family of nine children, seven of which have preceded him in death. James Samuel Mow of Oregon, being the only living brother. On December 25, 1881 he was united in marriage to Eva Clark, who was taken from him by death March 20, 1918. To this union five sons were given: Clarence Lasalle, who died June 3, 1921, Dallas Clayton, Charles Clyde and Leo Clark all of Richland Township and Calvin Dean of Argos, Indiana. One foster daughter, Bernice Clark, passed away July 11, 1921. In earlier life he was a member of the M.E. Church at Richland Center, but after moving to the present farm his membership was moved to the Grandview Evangelical Church. Death was due to acute heart trouble and he was ill only one week. A kind father and a good and generous neighbor has gone from us. He was always ready and willing to give whole-hearted aid and sympathy to his family and neighbors. He leaves to mourn his passing, four sons and their families, and many kind neighbors and friends.
(Compiler's Note: The photograph copied from the original, owned by Margarett STEININGER, is of the Adam MOW children in the early 1900's. The sisters, Anna and Sarah, are standing on the front porch of what appears to be a farm house. The four brothers are seated on the steps. Copying the names from the back of Margarett's photo, compiler has tried to identify the individuals, but may not have them correct. If it is correct, Marion MOW appears to be of no more than average height, perhaps a little short. He is heavy-set and although he is wearing a hat with a full brim, his face appears to be somewhat round, clean shaven and of ruddy complexion. He has a rather long narrow nose, as do the others in the photo. His hands, resting on his knees, look large and work-toughened. He is wearing a light-colored shirt with the collar buttoned and the long sleeves rolled to his elbows, light-colored work pants and suspenders.)

BIO: Wilma FOLTZ provided copies of two obituaries for Sarah WEIR.
Sarah E. WEIR, daughter of Adam and Harriet MOW, was born in Richland township, Nov. 9, 1869, and departed this life at her home south east of Richland Center, Indiana, January 22, 1929, aged 59 years. two months and 13 days. She was united in marriage to George W. Weir on August 29, 1888. To this union four children were born. They all survive except Grethel, who passed to the world beyond in infancy. When 15 years of age she was converted and united to the Grandview Evangelical church and a few years later removed her membership to the Richland Center M.E. church. On Sept. 24, 1927, the death angel hovered over the home and soon removed the spirit of the husband and companion of her life. The separation was hard to bear but with the faith of her Christ as her anchor and her face set toward the Heavenly City, she traveled onward toward that city. During her suffering she expressed to her Pastor, "that in this last hour of her life, with intense suffering and pain, her strength and comfort was in Christ, and that she had her cross to bear, that someday she would be set free from this body of flesh," and she lifted her voice in the words of the poet:
Must Jesus bear the cross alone, And all the world go free? No, there's a cross for everyone, And there's a cross for me.
The consecrated cross I'll bear, Till death shall set me free. And then go home, my crown to wear, For there's a crown for me.
Oh, Precious cross, oh glorious crown, Oh Resurrection Day, Ye angels from the stars come down And bear my soul away.
Upon the the crystal pavement, down, At Jesus' blessed feet, With joy I'll cast my golden crown, And his dear name repeat.
By faith she discerned the blessed world where there is no night, and hope and patience awaited the morning. It has now come. Hers was a long night. There were times when the night was dark when her soul travailed in the suffering of the flesh, but the morning came, it dawned with unearthly splendor, she passed from this Vale of tears and sorrow, to await the coming of her children. She leaves to mourn her departure, three sons, Harold, of Richland Township, Herman, at home, and Howard of South Bend, also a foster daughter, Mrs. Bertha Wilhelm, of Hammond. Two grandchildren, three brothers, J.S. Mow of Cornelius, Oregon, D.B. Mow and M.L. Mow of Richland Township and many friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Adams of Leiters Ford, at the Richland Center M.E. Church, on Thursday. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery.
The second obituary gives the cause of death as "cancer and dropsy". Death records at the Fulton County Bd. of Health list causes as "CA of Breast and Chest". It also names Sarah's sons as James, Herman A. and Howard A.
