BIO: FLOYD B. MOW, 75, DIES THIS MORNING Floyd B. Mow, 75, of near Richland Center, died at 7 p.m. today in Woodlawn hospital, where he had been a patient one week. He had been ill for 11 months. Mr. Mow had lived in Richland township since 1943 after moving from South Bend. He was a former construction superintendent for the H. G. Christman Co. of South Bend and also had been associated for four years with the Albert Kahn Architects and Engineers of Detroit. Born April 26, 1884 in Fulton County, Mr. Mow was the son of David and Catherine Beehler Mow. On June 14, 1905, he was married in South Bend to Emma Stech. He was a member of the St. Joseph Lodge 45 and Scottish Rite. He attended the Richland Center Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Floyd Mow, Jr., Roseville, Mich., three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Maine) Stichler and Mrs. Roy (Gladys) Riggs, both of South Bend; two brothers, Omer F. South Bend, and Carlton G., Moses Lake, Wash., several nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, a son and a sister preceded him in death. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Foster and Good Funeral home here with the Rev. Dale Hamilton officiating, assisted by the Rev. Harry Shewmaker. Burial will be in the Riverview cemetery at South Bend., where the Masonic Lodge 45 will conduct graveside rites.
Compiler's most vivid memory of "Uncle Floyd" is of a visit to his farm in the early 1950's. The farm and house were beautifully maintained, simple but very attractive. When compiler and her parents were preparing to leave, Uncle Floyd gave compiler an ear of popcorn grown on his farm. Compiler was astonished that popcorn was grown the same as sweet corn or field corn. In an interview with his nephew, Byron B. GILCHRIST, in June, 1996, Byron said of his uncle, "Uncle Floy came back thinking to farm at the start of WW I. Chrisman landed the job of building the ship yard for Ford. They coaxed him into taking the job as Supt. of the shipyards. He became quite well-known...had many opportunities for jobs all over the world. He returned to Fulton County and retired on the farm."

NOTE: The Broderbund WFT disk shows John Samuel MOW's place of birth as "Danville, KY" and in biographical notes, it states "Mercer County". Danville is now in Boyle County, KY. Boyle was formed in 1842 from Mercer and Lincoln Counties. At the time of John Samuel's birth, Danville would have been in Mercer Co.
BIO: In the spring of 1993, Margarett STEININGER, a desc. of David B. MOW responded to a letter from compiler with information about the MOW ancestors. Compiler had located a number of MOWs in Fulton County, IN on the 1850 Census. Among these were a 59 year old Samuel MOW and Adam MOW, the father of David B. MOW. Both were enumerated in the home of David MOW, Jr. Per Margarett's research interviews of the two genealogists who had worked on the MOW family, David, Jr. and Adam were both sons of this Samuel MOW, but with different mothers. Per the Census record, John Samuel MOW was born in KENTUCKY. His occupation was listed as laborer. Just four households from David MOW, Jr. was a David MOW, Sr. whose age was given as 51; he too was born in KENTUCKY. There was a James MOW enumerated as the only other person in this household, and he was 16 years old. While searching for the death date for James Samuel MOW (b. 1854), compiler sent a list of MOW ancestors to R. WILLIAMS, asking her to search the records at the Board of Health in Rochester, IN. On her response, Ms. WILLIAMS listed the 1852 death date and said this was the only James Samuel she could find. She noted that this was not consistent with the 1854 birth date for the James Samuel that compiler was looking for. Going back over all the available data, compiler has presumed this 1852 death date is for John (not James) Samuel MOW. In Jan. 1996, Wilma FOLTZ responded to a letter from compiler addressing this confusion. Per Wilma, John Samuel MOW was the father of Adam MOW; John Samuel was married at least twice, but the name of his first wife was unknown. Rebecca ARMSTRONG was his second wife, but the date and place of marriage is uncertain. John and Rebecca are both buried at Citizen's Cemetery in Rochester, IN. Quoting from Wilma's letter: "Years ago I went to visit a Mabel BOBBITT (MOW related) at Waldron, IN, near Shelbyville. She took me to a cemetery at Norristown where some of the early WALKERs and ARMSTRONGs were buried. She showed me one stone & I thought she said it was Rebecca's grave. So when I found John Samuel's stone in Rochester, I read the Rebecca stone that she was 12. Later...I found that it was Rebecca, John Samuels wife--42 instead of 12." (The latter referring to a stone in Rochester) Apparently the "Norristown" Wilma mentioned is Morristown, IN in Shelby County. Since Adam MOW and his wife ,Harriet WALKER, are thought to have been born in Shelby County, compiler suspects that this is where John Samuel and Rebecca were married. Mrs. FOLTZ does make reference to some of the WALKER family still being in Clinton County, IN, north northwest of Indianapolis. No search for marriage records has been made in Clinton County. NOTE: John Samuel MOW's date of birth has been calculated from the dates on his tombstone and agrees with his 1850 census age. *********************** Based on the available information, compiler has reached the following conclusions. 1. John Samuel MOW and David MOW, Sr. are probably brothers. 2. Adam is the son of John Samuel and Rebecca ARMSTRONG. 3. David must be the son of John's first wife. 4. John and Rebecca married between the birth of David, Jr (1827) and the birth of Adam (1829).Source:

BIO: Compiler found Samuel MOW and his son, Adam, enumerated in the home of David MOW, Jr., in Richland Twp., Fulton County, IN on the 1850 census. Inquiries to Wilma Foltz and Margarett Steininger led to reports that David, Jr. was the son of Samuel and the half-brother of Adam. Adam's obituary states that he was born in Shelby County, IN, 06 OCT 1829. David, Jr. died in Fulton County in October 1869. David was 6 days more than 42 years of age making his birthdate in September 1827, by calculation. Discovery of this family on the WORLD FAMILY TREE CDs in 1997, brought data submitted by Nancy NORDQUIST, Shoreline, WA, stating that David was born 01 OCT 1825. Per Ms. NORQUIST, David was born in OHIO. The source of her data was not cited on the disk. Ms. NORDQUIST also gives David's date of death as "06 OCT 1869." Compiler found David, Jr.'s place of birth listed on both the 1850 and the 1860 census as "Ind." On the "More About David MOW" notes in Ms. NORDQUIST's entry compiler found the statement, "Event 1: August 11, 1862, 1st LT. Co. F-87, Civil War". David MOW, Jr. was a veteran of the Civil War, enrolling in August, 1862 at Rochester, IN, but being declared totally disabled Dec. 1862 because of hemorrhoids. He and his family maintained a large farm near Pendleton Bridge on the Tippecanoe River in Fulton County where he was an active and respected member of the community. The following copy of his obituary was supplied by Wilma FOLTZ.
*********************** "DEATH OF DAVID MOW, Esq. This community felt a severe shock last Sunday evening, upon the announcement of the death of David Mow, at his residence in Richland Township, at 4 p.m. of that day. Mr. Mow had been seen by many the day previous, as he was in Rochester during a portion of the afternoon and evening. He attended the installation of the officers of the Rochester Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was the D.D.G.M. He was complaining, and was so unwell as to be unable to officiate at the installation, but no one had grounds for apprehension of danger. He went home, after the lodge closed, in company with Benj. Wilson, Esq. and Mr. C.S. Hickman, with whom he parted as on other similar occasions. He was taken sick two or three hours after reaching home, and fell into a congestive chill, which proved fatal. David Mow was six days more than 42 years of age, and the better portion of his life had been spent in Fulton County. He was generally known throughout the county. His business was that of a farmer, and he was one among the very few of his class who appeared to appreciate the honorableness and diginity of his calling. Everything calculated to advance the agricultural interests of this region found in him a ready advocate. He was a thriving man, because he was not above his business, and withal industrious, energetic, liberal and honest. His farm has long been supplied with labor-saving machinery, and he has successfully solved many problems in agriculture. Mr. Mow was an uncompromising Radical, and his voice will be sadly missed in the councels of the party. He was not an aspirant for office , but his generous heart was filled with the love of mankind. He believed that all men are created equal, and endowed by the great Creator with an unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A sentiment so noble, when believed from the heart, softens the sperities of life, and exhibits itself in works of charity and benevolence. Mr. Mow entered the army in August, 1862, as a Lieutenant in the 87th Regiment. He resigned his commission January 1863, having contracted a very painful form of hemorrhoids. In due time after his return, he became the father of three healthy children, all girls, at one birth. He leaves a large family, who are believed, however, to be well provided for. His funeral was preached on Tuesday, in the M.E. Church, at 11 oclock, by Rev. Mr. Stringer. A large congregation listened to the discourse and followed the remains to their last resting place in the Odd Fellow's Cemetery. ....Masonic fraternity, of which Mr. Mow was a member... ************************* In 1867, a small item appeared in the "Rochester Standard' on Feb 21, concerning a report that David Mow had come very near being drowned four days earlier while helping remove lodged ice from the bridge across the Tippecanoe River near Rochester. Late in May, 1889, David Mow's younger children filed for pensions for his Civil War service under the "Minor Children's Pension Act of July 25, 1866". Documents included in the application file verify the date of his death as the 3rd of October A.D. 1869 and give the place of death as "his farm, Richland Twp., Fulton Co., IN" The same file provides the date of death of David's wife, Eleanor--"died on the 23rd day of December 1873, in Fulton County, IN." Also included are the names and birthdates of seven of the MOW children born between 1854 and 1866. Census records from 1850 and 1860 indicate there were at least three other children not on the application. The last few documents in the file give evidence that this pension was never granted and that the claim was abandoned by about 1891. An inquiry from Jacob ZEITERS, Silver Lakes, IN in 1906 requests status of the claim. There is no later documentation.

BIO: Wilma FOLTZ provided a copy of the cemetery index for Citizen's Cemetery in Rochester, IN. Pg. 98 shows the inscriptions from the graves of "Samuel MOW" and "Rebecca MOW". The approximate date of Rebecca's birth has been calculated from the data on her stone. (43 yr-2 mo-6 da) Since no marriage date had been found for Rebecca and Samuel, it was not certain that she was the natural mother of Adam H. MOW, John Samuel's son, who was born in Shelby County, IN in 1826. Family tradition reports that John Samuel was married twice, but the name of his first wife is unknown as is the date and place of marriage. Jan. 1996: Mrs, FOLTZ wrote to compiler; "...Years ago I went to visit a Mabel BOBBITT (MOW related) at Waldron, IN, near Shelbyville. NOTE: The Norristown most probably refers to Morristown, IN in Shelby County. Since Adam MOW and Harriett WALKER both are thought to have been born in Shelby County, marriage records for Rebecca and John Samuel may be on file there.

BIO: The 1850 census for Fulton Co., IN shows a 20 yr. old Adam MOW living in the home of David MOW, Jr., whose age is given as 22. The place of birth for both Adam and David is IN. David, Jr.'s wife, Eleanor HOLDSTOCK, and two small sons are also enumerated in this home, as is "Samuel", 59 yr. old and born in KY. Just 4 houses away there is a David MOW, Sr. (51), born in KY., also a James MOW (16) born in OHIO. Next door is another home consisting of William MOW, born OHIO, and his wife Caroline (20), born in NY. Since Adam later named a son David Bruce, compiler first assumed that David, Jr. and Adam were brothers and their father was David, Sr. who was enumerated in his own household. Margarett STICHLER STEININGER, grand daughter of David Bruce, wrote compiler that the "Samuel" shown in David, Jr.'s home was the father of the two young men. David MOW, Jr., the husband of Eleanor HOLDSTOCK, served in Co. F of the 87th Reg., Indiana Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He was discharged with total disability on Dec., 1862. Military Pension File records do not identify his parents or any relatives other than his children who applied for their "Minor Children's Benefits" long after the death of their father. Adam MOW's obituary states that he had married Harriet WALKER in MAR, 1850; (Marriage Records states 16 MAR 1851) the 1850 census showing Adam in his "half-brother's" home was conducted in October, 1850. On that census, there is a place for "Married within the year"; there is no tally by Adam's name to indicate that he had married. William MOW in household #41, however, reports that he had married in that census year.

He was married to Miss HARRIET WALKER, March 16, 1850, who with six children survive him. The deceased was a member of the church for a number of years prior to his death and was known and respected in his neighborhood as a clever, honest and faithful neighbor and citizen. His death is deeply mourned by all his relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted by the IOOF lodge at Salina, of which he had been a good and faithful member. The religious services were conducted by Rev. ROBERT B. BEATY, and the burial was attended by a large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends--sixty-two wagons and a number of men on horseback were in the procession. His remains were laid away in the cemetery at the Central Church. As neighbors and associates we deeply sympathize with the bereaved family, hoping that at some time we may enjoy the reward and the society of Brother MOW." -B.C. WILSON. (Resolutions of Respect...Bro. ADAM H. MOW, P.G. and member of 435 IOOF....C.W. HOLMAN, JAMES GIBBONS, SOLOMON CAVINGER, com)
Compiler was still somewhat uncertain of the identity of Adam MOW's father, but in January 1998, compiler's husband found the MOW family on one of Broderbund's "World Family Tree" CDs. One of these entries had been submitted by Nancy NORQUIST of Shoreline, WA. The data submitted for that disk shows Adam H., b. October 04, 1829, and Rebecca, b. October 04, 1830, as the children born to John Samuel MOW and Rebecca ARMSTRONG after their marriage on 25 Feb. 1827. According to this disk entry, the child, Rebecca, died 05 Feb. 1844. No place of death or burial is listed. Since the WFT disks do not provide space for documentation/referencing, compiler has written a letter to Ms. NORQUIST, hoping to find out her sources of data. As of 22 Jan. 1998, there has been no response.
