BIO: Little is known about this John WRIGHT except what has been found in his father's C.W. Pension File and in the limited information from family tradition. John B. WRIGHT reported in pension applications that his son was born 04 FEB 1872 in Fulton Co., IN. In 1900, John M. WRIGHT married Maine Augusta MOW in Fulton Co. This couple apparently resided in St. Joseph Co. for the brief duration of their marriage since they were not found in the 1900 census nor in property records of Fulton Co. There is no record of their divorce in Fulton Co., IN records. On 22 OCT 1901, Maine gave birth to the couple's only known child, Alice Pauline WRIGHT, in South Bend (St Joseph) IN. By May of 1910, Maine had been married to Theodore STICHLER for three years. Richland Twp., Fulton Co., census shows "Alice WRIGHT, stepdaughter" as 7 years of age. The marriage of John M. WRIGHT and Maine MOW evidently ended in divorce in St. Joseph Co. before 1907, but the MOW family avoided discussion of " Mr. WRIGHT". The only information given to this compiler by her father, Virgil GILCHRIST, was that there had been a divorce and, "the family never talked about it".

BIO: Compiler remembers "Aunt Maine" as very proud and dignified in appearance. She was considered a "proper lady" and one for whom compiler's father felt a particular fondness. The few times when she was to visit the GILCHRIST home were anticipated with great preparation and excitement. Her oldest daughter, Alice, and compiler's father grew up as very close friends, as well as first cousins. Maine (MOW) STICHLER was to some extent a "substitue mother" to Virgil, and they maintained close contact over many miles and through many years. Compiler's sister, Claudia GILCHRIST DEEN, has a letter written to Virgil by his aunt in October, 1956, which compiler has photocopied: Oct. 31, 1956 Dear Virgil and family- You may be surprised to hear from me after so long- but this line is to tell you I do think of you all and wonder how you are. I didn't feel I could go to Jim's wedding alone, and so I missed seeing you. I am sure every one were happy on the happy ocassion. Where will they be at home? Not to far away I hope. How is your work now? I hope you have work and able to be on the job. There seem to be plenty building going on every where, we are getting another school building at Richland Center- Ernie is back to work again but he had a rugged time after surgery-for varicose veins. I will be glad for a line to know how you & family are.
Love aunt Maine
(Compiler's Note) The wedding she mentions was that of Jim GILCHRIST and Katherine WISHARD. "Ernie" was her son-in-law, husband of Alice WRIGHT ODELL. Nineteen-year-old Maine MOW was the oldest of David and "Kate" MOW's children still living at home at the time of the 1900 census. In July of that year, she married John M. WRIGHT. Their daughter, Alice Pauline, was born in October of 1901. Sometime before January 1906, this marriage ended in a divorce. Little is known about John WRIGHT or the marriage; this was a "closed subject" for discussion in the MOW family. The GILCHRIST's apparently respected this for the only thing compiler was ever told was "Aunt Maine was married to Alice's father, Mr. WRIGHT". Evidently Maine's second marriage was a much happier one, and Theodore STICHLER seemed to be highly respected throughout the family. The STICHLERs "made history" in Fulton County when Maine gave birth to triplets in November, 1915. "The Rochester Sentinel" carried the following story on Nov. 20: For the first time in sixteen years, the birth of triplets was recorded in this county, Friday when Mrs. Theodore Stichler, who lives north of the river, became the mother of two daughters and one son. Two children are living and seem to be in perfect health, while one daughter was still born. The living children weigh five and six pounds, and have been named Theodore, Jr. and Theodora. Mrs. Stichler is thirty-four years old and is the mother of two other children. Dr. Meek of Tiosa, the attending physician says that it was the first time he officiated at the arrival of triplets.
The two surviving members of this birth grew up and married in Fulton County. The daughter, Theodora, died a tragic death by suicide in 1943, accidentally taking the life of her small son at the same time. On June 3, 1969 Maine STICHLER attended the funeral of her youngest sister, Gladys RIGGS, in South Bend. Immediately after the service, Maine suffered a massive stroke and died at 1:35 p.m. on the same day her sister was buried. WIlma FOLTZ has provided a photocopy of the obituary:
STROKE LEADS TO DEATH OF MRS. STICHLER Mrs. Maine Stichler, 87, of the Haven Hubbard Nursing Home, New Carlisle, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital, where she had been taken after she collapsed at the Hollis Funeral Home while attending the funeral of her sister, Mrs. Gladys M. Riggs. Death was attributed to a stroke. She was born July 27, 1881, in Fulton County and came to South Bend in 1937 from Battle Creek, Mich. Her husband, Theodore, died in 1922. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ernest O'dell, Mrs. Frank Cauffman and Mrs. Hugh Steininger, all of South Bend; a son, Theodore of Gas City, Ind., nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Omer Mow of South Bend and Carlton Mow of Moses Lake, Wash. Two other daughters preceded her in death. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Lydick United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Seitz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Richland Center. Friends may call at the Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 Thursday. BIO: Alice was a first cousin to Virgil GILCHRIST, compiler's father. The two cousins were extremely close in their youth. Compiler has heard many stories from her father of Virgil and Alice speaking Latin as they traveled from their farm homes to Richland Center High School. They also attended many parties and dances together and spent much time in each other's homes. After their marriages, Alice was a frequent visitor in the GILCHRIST home. She never missed sending some nice gift for each graduation or wedding in the GOLCHRIST FAMILY. She once traveled from South Bend to Jeffersonville at comipiler's request to surprise Virgil and Elizabeth at their anniversary dinner. Alice ran a thriving antique business out of her home-shop for many years. After her mother-in-law began to experience failing health, Alice closed her business in order to care for Mary JOHNSON O'DELL in "Plez" and Alice's home. After Mary's death, she once again opened and enjoyed her antique business.
Wilma FOLTZ has provided a copy of the following obituary. MRS. ERNEST O'DELL Mrs. Alice P. O'dell, 72, of 1436 Lincoln Way E., died at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Joseph Hospital after an illness of one week. She was born Oct. 22, 1901 in South Bend and lived here all her life. On Dec. 23, 1922, in Mishawaka, she was married to Pleasant (Ernest) O'dell, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J.L. Meunick of Mishawaka, two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Theodore Stichler of Gas City, Ind.; and a sister, Mrs. Hugh Stieninger of South Bend. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home, 1201 S. Mrs. O'dell had been employed by Uniroyal Inc. for 10 years. She was a member of Chapter 2, OES, and the Antique Dealers Assn.

BIO: Wilma FOLTZ has provided most of the data for Theodore STICHLER and his children. In the information sent to compiler, there was no place of birth given for him, but compiler had extracted the STICHLER's data from the 1910 census. On that enumeration, Theodore's place of birth is given as INDIANA. Both of his parents were reported to have been born in GERMANY. Theodore's age on that census was given as "45". This would indicate that he was 42 when he and Maine (MOW) WRIGHT married three years earlier. Whether Theodore had a previous marriage is not known. Per the census, he owned his farm "free and clear." Compiler has not made a real effort to find Theodore on earlier census records, but there were two or three families of STICHLER's found in Marshall County in 1870. The senior members of these families report their birthplace as FRANCE. It should be noted that the name is frequently spelled as "STICKLER." Theodore died young. He was just 57 at the time of his death. He left his wife, Maine, with a 20-year-old daughter, who would marry a few months later, and four other children under 12. Per Deed Books in Fulton County, Maine sold a parcel of land to Clayton R. ROOKSTOOL in Nov., 1927. Compiler has not examined that deed, but this could have been Theodore's farm in Fulton County. This may have been the time of Maine's move to St. Joseph County, where she would live the remainder of her life. The obituary for Theodore does not contain as much vital data as most obituaries of that time. Wilma FOLTZ has provided the copy from which it was taken. *************************** Feb. 18, 1922 Theodore Stickler, 57, farmer who lived near the Pendleton bridge is dead of cancer of the stomach. He had been ill about six months. He is survived by a widow and five children. Funeral Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Whippoorwill Church. Burial at Richland Center. ****************************
After compiler sent Margaret (STICHLER) STEININGER a copy of this biographical information on her father, Margaret wrote in a letter to compiler (30 Jan. 1998), "...I am very happy to receive the information on the STICHLER family; the obituary of Feb. 18, 1922 which states that my father died of stomach cancer sure was news to me. Theodore and I never knew that he had cancer. I have the hand written obituary that my Mother wrote at the time of his death and cancer was not mentioned..." Per Byron GILCHRIST, Theodore had earned a very comfortable living, and held a great many assets until he was caught up in the scam of a "merchant" who wanted to establish a large business in downtown Rochester. The "merchant" evidently succeeded in collecting a large sum of money from various local residents, then disappeared from the area leaving no trace of his destination. Quoting from an interview compiler had with Byron GILCHRIST, June, 1996: "Theodore was a very intelligent person! He earned a great deal of money. He was actually a teamster...had a big team of horses...built streets...He lost his money just before he died...'invested in a bogus grocery store that came to town. The outfit talked several people into investing in their business, then they disappeared from Rochester, taking those folks' money with them. I don't know if Theodore ever knew he lost his fortune; he was so ill when it all happened that Aunt Maine probably never told him...or if she did he probably did not comprehend it. Theodore had 2 brothers in South Bend...Charles STICHLER and the other brother's name I don't remember...He never married..."
Following Byron's funeral service in Indianapolis, IN, 10 January 1998, compiler had the opportunity to meet and talk briefly with Theodore's son, Theodore, Jr. Margarett STEININGER, Theodore's daughter, also attended the family gathering in Indianapolis, and the two shared some of their memories and some of the STICHLER family tradition with compiler.
Our dad had two brothers--Charlie and Fred. Fred became a hermit. When Fred died, Charlie came and told Dad they needed to go take care of the arrangements. Dad went and got his sheep shears. He cut Uncle Fred's hair with the shears, and did a great job! Everyone said what a good haircut Dad gave him. Dad was a real whiz with tools of any kind. Folks said he could do more with a single tool than most people would ever think of trying. He was smart!
Concerning Theodore's ancestors, ...Dad's father came to New York from GERMANY with two brothers. Somehow they got separated in N.Y. Two of them were finally reunited, but they never found the third one... Grandpa went (compiler missed the location) and started farming... They lived together until until they died; they had five children...

(Compiler's Note) The wedding she mentions was that of Jim GILCHRIST and Katherine WISHARD. "Ernie" was her son-in-law, husband of Alice WRIGHT ODELL. (Mrs. FOLTZ added "Aug. 26, 1973".) Charlotte was the first born of Maine and Theodore STICHLER. At the time of the 1910 census, Theodore and Maine had been married three years, and Maine's daughter, Alice, was enumerated in their home at age 8. That census was taken May, 1910; Charlotte was born in August of that year. The 1920 census shows Carlotte, "Daughter, F, W, 9, b. Indiana..." in the household of her parents on 02 Jan. 1920. Compiler's first memory of Charlotte was from a visit taken to the STICHLER home about 1951. At that time, Charlotte and her son, David, were living with her mother, Maine MOW WRIGHT STICHLER. Charlotte's father died in 1922. Compiler remembers her father, Virgil GILCHRIST, frequently speaking of Charlotte's "grit" in deciding to raise David by herself, and what a good job she had done. David was a teenager at the time of the visit, and he was a very pleasant, mature and polite young man. In the above obituary, the statement is made that Charlotte was a member of Mothers of WW II. Compiler questions this information, since David would not have been old enough to serve in that war. David's obituary states that he was a member of the American Legion, so he probably was a veteran of the Korean War.

General Notes for Child Theodora Isabelle Stichler
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Wilma MOW FOLTZ has provided compiler with hand-copied articles taken from the files of the "Rochester Sentinel", Rochester, IN
20 November 1915: For the first time in sixteen years, the birth of triplets was recorded in this county, Friday when Mrs. Theodore Stickler who lives north of the river, became the mother of two daughters and one son. Two children are living and seem in perfect health, while one daughter was still-born. The living children weigh five and six pounds, and have been named Theodore, Jr. and Theodora. Mrs. Stickler is thirty four years old and is the mother of two other children. Dr. Meek of Tiosa, the attending physician says that it was the first time he officiated at the arrival of triplets. *********************
In 1943, Theodora committed suicide. In spite of her precautions to protect her children, her son died with her. The following account appeared in the Rochester newspaper. "A former Richland Township resident now of South Bend, committed suicide and her bewildered four year old son laid his head on his mother's breast in the gas filled kitchen of their home Saturday to join her in the death she intended to spare for her children. It was there that Hubert Woodcox found his wife, Theodora, 27, and his son, Hubert Wayne, when he returned to their little home near South Bend after finishing his night shift at Studebaker aviation plant Saturday morning. In a bedroom with a window open slept the daughter, Laura Gail Woodcox, 6, who was rushed to the Epworth hospital in South Bend for emergency treatment and released soon after. A note in the lifeless hand of the mother told the tragic story. Suffering from an illness that dated back to an automobile accident more than a year ago in which Mrs. Woodcox received a neck injury; the mother had put her children to bed, carefully covered the space under the hall door with a rug that was used to keep the fumes from the children. Then she wrote the note to her husband. She said she hoped the children would not breathe the gas. It was 1:30 a.m. she said in the note, when she became very tired and wanted "to rest." But Hubert Wayne awoke at his usual early hour Saturday morning and went in search of his mother. He found her lying on the floor of the gas filled kitchen. Apparently drowsy from the fumes, the little tot lay down by his mother with his head on her breast. There Mr. Woodcox found him, his body still warm, when he came from work. Ladora's longer sleep apparently saved her life, the open window in the bedroom protected that area from the gas. Mr. Woodcox told of a previous attempt by the mother to take her life in the same manner. Then, he said, the gas made her ill before she lost consciousness and she turned off the gas and went to bed. This time the six burners on the stove poured forth fumes until the husband came home. Mrs. Woodcox was born on a farm north of Rochester November 17th, 1915, one of triplets. She moved to South Bend from Rochester in the spring of 1927. Last April 1 the couple celebrated their ninth anniversary. Mr. Woodcox is the son of Mrs. Sam Wenger of this city who was notified of the tragedy. Mr. Woodcox has a number of relatives in this community. For several years Mr. and Mrs. Woodcox lived on a farm south of Richland Center before moving to South Bend to reside. Mrs. Woodcox is survived, in addition to her husband and daughter, by her mother, Mrs. Maine Stickler, of South Bend; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Steininger, Chain O'Lakes; Mrs. Alice O'Dell, Mishawaka and Miss Charlotte Stickler, of Battle Creek, Mich.; a brother, Theodore, one of the triplets, of Argos. The third child of the triplets died shortly after birth. The son, Hubert Wayne, was born in South Bend, October 27, 1938. The bodies were moved to the Forest G. Hay funeral home in South Bend where they will lie in state. Funeral arrangements are incomplete."
The 1920 census record shows the age of "Theodora I." and her brother, Theodore, as "4-7/12."

September 24, 1927 George Weir, aged 60, a well known farmer of the Richland Center neighborhood passed away at his home shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Death resulted from a cancerous infection and an attack of influenza. George, the son of James and Mary Weir, was born on a farm near Richland Center on April 19, 1867 and has resided in that vicinity all of his life. On August 18, 1888 he was united in marriage to Sarah Mowe. Mr. Weir was a member of the IOOF Lodge of Richland Center. The deceased is survived by his wife and three sons, Harold of near Richland Center, Howard of South Bend and Herman at home. The funeral services will be held at the Richland Center Church with the Rev. John Dean in charge. Burial will be made in the adjacent cemetery.
Compiler's Note: The obituary states the cause of death was cancer and influenza; death records at the Bd. of Health give the cause as "Cancer of the jaw and liver."

She was united in marriage to George W. Weir on August 29, 1888. To this union four children were born. They all survive except Grethel, who passed to the world beyond in infancy. When 15 years of age she was converted and united to the Grandview Evangelical church and a few years later removed her membership to the Richland Center M.E. church. On Sept. 24, 1927, the death angel hovered over the home and soon removed the spirit of the husband and companion of her life. The separation was hard to bear but with the faith of her Christ as her anchor and her face set toward the Heavenly City, she traveled onward toward that city. During her suffering she expressed to her Pastor, "that in this last hour of her life, with intense suffering and pain, her strength and comfort was in Christ, and that she had her cross to bear, that someday she would be set free from this body of flesh," and she lifted her voice in the words of the poet:
Must Jesus bear the cross alone, And all the world go free? No, there's a cross for everyone, And there's a cross for me.
The consecrated cross I'll bear, Till death shall set me free. And then go home, my crown to wear, For there's a crown for me.
Oh, Precious cross, oh glorious crown, Oh Resurrection Day, Ye angels from the stars come down And bear my soul away.
Upon the the crystal pavement, down, At Jesus' blessed feet, With joy I'll cast my golden crown, And his dear name repeat.
By faith she discerned the blessed world where there is no night, and hope and patience awaited the morning. It has now come. Hers was a long night. There were times when the night was dark when her soul travailed in the suffering of the flesh, but the morning came, it dawned with unearthly splendor, she passed from this Vale of tears and sorrow, to await the coming of her children. She leaves to mourn her departure, three sons, Harold, of Richland Township, Herman, at home, and Howard of South Bend, also a foster daughter, Mrs. Bertha Wilhelm, of Hammond. Two grandchildren, three brothers, J.S. Mow of Cornelius, Oregon, D.B. Mow and M.L. Mow of Richland Township and many friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Adams of Leiters Ford, at the Richland Center M.E. Church, on Thursday. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery.
The second obituary gives the cause of death as "cancer and dropsy". Death records at the Fulton County Bd. of Health list causes as "CA of Breast and Chest". It also names Sarah's sons as James, Herman A. and Howard A.
