General Notes (Husband)

By 1901 the children (of Dr. Murray and Susan Jane Clark Murray) were grown and three of them had married and moved away. The fourth child, John Girardeau Murray, was a bachelor living at home and managing the farm for his mother. The "new" house was now about 70 years old, and probably in need of some serious repair and modernization. The impetus for doing so apparently was Girardeau's decision in 1906 to marry and bring his bride, Mary Robertson Pope, to live at "Cypress Trees." In 1906 "Gerry" and " Mamie" Murray reshaped, reoriented and remodeled the house so completely that the family had to move out while the work was done. They lived in the cotton house during the construction. A Mr. Westcoat did a lot of the remodeling and painting inside and out. He lived near the old Post Office; he probably was also the Postmaster. They tore down all except the four rooms which are now the oldest part of the house: the dining room and kitchen and the two rooms directly above them. They added the east wing with a dining room on the main floor (where the living room is today) and a third upstairs bedroom above it, wit a new (third) chimney to heat the. They moved the kitchen to its present location and converted the old kitchen to a parlor, facing the driveway. They build the two downstairs bedrooms on the back (river side), and a bathroom with running water and flush toilet between the. They added the new wraparound porches on the south, east, and north sides, with the front steps and entrance now facing the driveway. They kept the original interior stairway with its graceful curved banister, but turned it 180 degrees so that once again it faced the front and opened into doors and the original porch railings, which are now on the front of the house. Marian Calhoun Murray (who did not join the family until almost 30 years later) was aware that there had been some controversy over all this remodeling. "Mrs. Murray was criticized for extravagance. The dining room was now at the opposite end of the house from the kitchen, but there were servants to carry the food and dishes back and forth, by the back hall. Girardeau Murray had his farm desk in the southeast corner of the dining room by the porch. On Friday afternoons the farm hands would come up on the porch and he would pay them, in cash, through the east window. Mary Murray Spencer and Sarh Murray Howle had mostly happy memories in 1994 of growing up in this large, modern, newly-renovated house. According to Mary, their parent's bedroom was the downstairs southeast room, next to the bathroom. The back bedroom downstairs was for the smallest child. "I can remember being in it, and later my older brother J.G. was in it temporarily when he was extremely ill, I think with typhoid fever. Upstairs, the girls' room was always the east room. J.G. had the small west room over the kitchen. The north bedroom was mainly for storage, and had beds for visiting children. The only bathroom we had was downstairs, but we were glad to have it. It was one of the first indoor bathrooms with running water and flush toilet on the island. There was still a privy on the bluff behind the cotton house, which was used mainly in the coldest weather, when the running water had to be turned off to protect the pipes from freezing. Water pressure was by gravity from an elevated tank across the yard. A black man pumped the tank full once a day from a well. "Occasionally, the water pressure would quit just as you were running water into the tub for a bath. that meant that the man responsible had not filled the storage tank that morning," Mary recalls. A pitcher pump mounted on a separate well across the yard provided drinking water, which was carried to the house by hand and kept in a cooler in the back hall at all times. "The water tasted good. It was from a deeper well."

When Susan Jane Clark Murray died in 1917, all six of her children apparently inherited equal shares of "Cypress Trees." Girardeau's five brothers and sisters sold their combined interest to him for $5,000 cash. This kept the farm together for another generation, while others on the Island were being divided among heirs. The first two decades of the Twentieth Century were, by most accounts, a prosperous time at "Cypress Trees" and on Edisto Island in general. Cotton was king again, and Sea Island long-staple cotton in particular was much in demand. By 1934 when Girardeau Murray died, the boll weevil and the Great Depression had drastically changed the economy of Edisto Island. But "Cypress Trees" was still a valuable and productive farm.
