Murray of Atholl

Crest Badge: A mermaid holding in her dexter hand a mirror, and in the sinister a comb all proper. Motto: Tout pret (Quite ready). Gaelic Name: MacMhuirich.

This clan first began in 1629, when John was created 1st Murray Earl of Atholl, and the earldom of Tullibardine was given to his uncle. Other branches of the clan include: the Murrays of Polmaise,of Abercairney, of Auchtertyre, and of Elibank.


Atholl was a royalist and his son was a strong supporter of Charles I. His son received the earldom and was later created Marquis of Atholl, but was angered at his reception by William of Orange and joined the Jacobites. He died in 1703.


The 2nd Marquis became the 1st Duke and was a vehement opponent of the Union of 1707. The Atholls were heavily engaged in the Risings of 1715, 1718 and 1745. Lord George of Atholl unrolled the standard of Prince Charles at Gelnfinnan and was renowned for his brilliance as the Lieutenant-General of the Prince's army.


The 2nd Duke was succeeded by his daughter, who married her cousin, John Murray, the eldest son of Lord George Murray John received many other titles of the Murray family by this union.
